Canadians are the least prejudiced among Western countries against Muslims

Although a survey in Summer of 2006 found that Muslims are viewed negatively by Canadians, Canada is at the forefront of nations when it comes to its people's view on Muslims.

A recent survey of Canada, the United States, Australia, New Zealand and 19 European countries found that Canada has the least prejudice towards Muslims.

Only 6.5% of those surveyed in Canada said they would not like to live beside a Muslim, compared to Greece (20.9 per cent), Belgium (19.8), Norway (19.3) and Finland (18.9). Britain had 14.1%, and the US was 10.9%. The average for all the countries was 14.5%.

The US figure is surprisingly low, given the amount of rhetoric against Islam and Muslims in the media, radio talk shows, and bloggers.

The immigrant based countries (Australia, New Zealand, USA, Canada) have less prejudice than Europe, perhaps because those countries are based on ethnicity, lineage, culture and language, rather than being a mosaic/melting pot.
