Google Trends For Search on Drupal, Mambo, Joomla and Wordpress

Google Trends is a tool from Google Labs that shows what the world is searching for.

As an experiment, I used a Google Trends Drupal search, and got a graph showing a steady upward trend in searching for  Drupal from 2004 till now.

What is intriguing is the spike in mid 2005. Was that around the time that the servers choked and we had the fundraising for the new servers (July)?

The other intriguing tidbit is why Budapest and Hungary are the top city/region? Why is Indonesia and Czech Republic the top two after that? Vancouver seems obvious due to the conference there in February.

To have something to compare to, try a Google Trends search on Linux. The overall trend is downwards (perhaps  the product  is  more known now?), and the points  on the graph show the spikes due to news triggering it.

Going back to the CMS arena, check the search on Mambo CMS. On the other hand, Joomla has only a short history (due its rebirth from Mambo), but a sharp rise.

Wordpress is also on an upward trend, with Vancouver being at the top (no wonder, Matt Mullenwegg, its founder, was in Vancouver for the OSCMS Conference in February). I wonder what that new year spike is ...

Compare those "healthy" CMS packages with the legacy ones, such as  PHP Nuke and Post Nuke. They both have a downward trend.

To sum it all up, check the trends curve for all the above in one graph. Drupal looks a bit worse than on its own graph.

Google Trends: Drupal Vs Joomla

Well! after more than one year of this post, the trends are still in favor of Joomla, one thing to note is that both the CMS have shown a healthy rise in popularity which is a good sign. Some of the things about google trends are clearly unanswered like the one posted here -"why is Indonesia and Czech Republic the top two after that?" At the time of my checking it out, it was Indonesia on top, so somethings are definitely unanswered.
