A recent survey by WorldPublicOpinion.org in Egypt, Pakistan, Morocco and Indonesia found that a majority thinks that the USA's goal is to weaken and divide Islam.

The survey also contains responses on things like:

• Whether Al-Qaeda's goal is to get the USA to withdraw forces from Muslim countries.
• The majority of Muslims see that attacks on civilians are not at all justified.
• A majority see strict application of Shariah law in every Islamic country.
• Who is responsible for the September 11 attacks.

Some of that is due to the conspiracy theory minded populace, but much of it is due to the recent USA actions in the Middle East and other Muslim countries.
