Australia drops charges against doctor accused in UK bomb plot

Another case of collateral damage in the global war against terror.

Dr Mohamed Haneef, an Indian Muslim physician working in Brisbane, Australia was arrested there in connection with the attempted bombings in London, England and Glasgow, Scotland, by Muslim medical workers.

Now, he has been cleared of any charges.

Australia's top prosecutor on Friday withdrew all charges against an Indian doctor accused of supporting last month's failed bomb attacks on London and Glasgow, and admitted the charges should never have been laid.

Prosecutors dropped the case against Mohamed Haneef in the Brisbane Magistrates Court after a review of the evidence by the federal Director of Public Prosecutions Damian Bugg found two major errors in the case.

"In my view, there is insufficient evidence to establish the elements of the offence," Bugg told reporters in Canberra, adding that he was satisfied there was "no reasonable prospect of conviction."

"On my view of the matter, a mistake has been made," he said.
