Car for sale fraud: selling a car much lower than market value
Submitted by Khalid on Sun, 2009/05/17 - 13:08Here is another fraud attempt. The scammer advertises a desirable car for much less than market value, then claiming that the car will be shipped.
The car in question in this case is the fuel efficient hybrid Toyota Prius. While it sells for $19,000 used for 2004, this scammer said he is selling a 2007 for $5,400.
Here is an email chain about this.
From: me To: Lorraine ThompsonHello I saw your ad for a Prius: 2007 TOYOTA PRIUS , 40000 kms, $5400, Pre-owned, 2007 Toyota Prius with option package 2. Clean title - no accidents or damage, excellent condition, super clean, non-smoker, one owner, always garaged, regular oil changes. Which city is this car located in? What is your phone number so I can get more info on it.
The reply from "Lorraine" was typical:
To: Lorraine ThompsonFrom: me Hello, Glade to see your interest in purchasing my car. 2007 Toyota Prius Automatic transmission. The Color is Red /Gray interior. Clean carfax no lien, there is nothing to be paid on this car. Still under warranty, fully transferable to the new owner, full coverage, covers the engine transmission. drive axle transfer case water pump electrical and air conditioning. You can use the warranty, at any dealer or any certified mechanicof your choice. Has never been in an accident and needs nothing at this time. The interior of the car is in excellent shape. It comes with clear title, original invoice, bill of sale, owner manual. I want 5,400 for the car and the reason I'm selling for so low is because it's the only asset I have that can be turned fast into cash. I'm on a business trip right now, so I can sell you the car only through an escrow company. Probably the delivery can be included in the price, but I need your post code to make sure. Thank-you, Lorraine
Note that "she" is on a business trip, and is selling it cheap because it is the "only asset", and will use an "escrow" company.

Thank you for being interested in buying my 2005 Honda Pilot EXL, 98000 miles, automatic transmission. It is in EXCELLENT condition; the body and paint are great, no scratches and no dents; the interior is clean; it has never been involved in an accident; the title is clear.
I have recetly moved to Portugal. I was hoping to take my car here but when I found out how much shipping and registration would be i've changed my mind. As I'm unable to travel in the near future and I don't have anyone in the US to help me with the sale I decided to make this transaction through eBay. I believe this protects both buyer and seller and it's the right way to do this.
The final price is $4,000. If you decide to buy this car or need further information please get back to me as soon as possible.
Thank you,
Deborah
I almost fell for this one on
I almost fell for this one on craigslist. A guy said he would give me a deal if I bought and used touchup paint to fix some scratches on the side. After I did, he wanted me to put down a deposit which I never saw again because the guy apparently left the state. What the heck!
