I am fond of antiques, heritage, and the like. The real collector in the family is my mother. Throughout her life, she was an avid collector of antiques from various parts of the world. Here are some samples of things that were collected from various places over Egypt of the previous decades.

These pictures will give you an idea on what we like. They were taken by a (now old) Minolta Dimage Digital camera.

(Click here for a larger image) This is the "Blue Collection". It consists of a series of blue glass vessels, belonging to different cultures, countries, time periods and uses. Each was purchased on a different time, often from different vendors and places. However, they all show harmony as if they were made at the same factory!
(Click here for a larger image) This is the "Pink Collection". Similar to the Blue Collection above, but with a different color.
(Click here for a larger image) This is the "Green Collection". Similar to the Blue Collection and the Pink Collection above.
(Click here for a larger image) This is the "White Collection" which is made of porcelain.
(Click here for a larger image) Egyptian Mameluke period mirror frame. Made of Enamel with Quranic verses.
(Click here for a larger image) This is a bibliotheque (Book Shelf) that was purchased from the clinic of Dr. Ali Basha Ibrahim. He was a famous surgeon in Cairo. This is over 100 years old, since its glass panes show small bubbles that are typical of the glass made in those days.It has no metal nails at all in its frame, all bound by wood.
(Click here for a larger image) This is another book cabinet (Bibliotheque).
(Click here for a larger image) Turkish handwashing vessel made of "White Metal" (Pewter?). The bottom part contains a perforated surface where a person would wash his/her hands and let the draining water go into those perforations and collect in the bottom part, for later discarding.

The table is old Egyptian made of Ebony wood, with mother of pearl and ivory inlays.

(Click here for a larger image) Turkish "Serma". Made of natural silk cloth, woven gold-plated thin silver threads.
(Click here for a larger image) Hand printed cloth.
(Click here for a larger image) Two different pieces of hand made cloth in one frame. The bottom part is "Brocard" hand made silk cloth with silver threads. The top part is hand made cloth silk and linen, with Arabic inscriptions (see detail below)
(Click here for a larger image) Hand made cloth silk and linen, with Arabic inscription showing, in Arabic, "Malboos El 'Afya" (approximate translation: Wear it in Good Health).

(Click here for a larger image) Book cover made of leather embroidered with silver thread decorations.

(Click here for a larger image) Iron Chandelier with pink glass.

(Click here for a larger image) "Marquetrie" bed room set. This is not antique per se, but rather my mother's wedding bed room set. It goes back to at least late 1950's. It has floral designs made of inlaid wood in different colors.
(Click here for a larger image) This is a close up on the handmade floral design of inlaid wood in different colors and shades.
(Click here for a larger image) Persian ceramic tile.
(Click here for a larger image) Turkish hand embroided cloth.
(Click here for a larger image) "Kalamkar" hand printed cloth. The "white metal" plant pot is actually a "Tarbouch" (Fez) hanger from the old days. Upon entering his house, an oriental man used to put his Fez on this hanger.
(Click here for a larger image) China ware / porcelain collection.
(Click here for a larger image) Balcony decorations from old houses in Tanta. Tanta is a city in the Nile Delta, which used to be a caravan route between Cairo and Alexandria. It has some Islamic architecture.

Blue Glass Decanter and glasses

Thu, 2009/01/29 - 19:13

I have had an Egyptian Blue Glass Decanter and glasses that is wrapped on the base in silver for years. I am trying to put values on many items, including this for my estate.
Any suggestions?

Her antiques are very beautiful! I wish I had the room to collect as many as that. Unfortunately that is difficult to do in an apartment. :(
