Warning to female tourists thinking of marrying Egyptians

  1. Home

By Khalid on 2008/11/22 - 20:17, last updated 2008/12/28 - 15:53

A word of caution for female tourists visiting Egypt: be careful of the many of the men working in tourist areas in Egypt.

Although the vast majority of Egyptians have a high sense of honor and good conduct, it seems that tourist areas seem to attract a relatively high concentration of people with lax morals, who would exploit tourists in many ways. It can manifest itself as persistent aggressive begging, peddling cheap goods, charging 10X the normal prices for services and goods, and what this article focuses on: exploiting female tourists.

Looking at the bulk of the comments on my notes on compulsory army service in egypt they are mostly from non-Egyptian women who married (or intend to marry) an Egyptian man, and army service has become an obstacle.

So, once you here the word "habibti" (meaning "my love" in Arabic), and before you call him "Habibi", let alone go down the marriage route, read on below for more information.

The exploitation happens in many forms, but is normally centered around one of the following:

Easy and Free Sex

Many tourists come from countries where sex is more freely practiced outside of marriage. Youn g Egyptian men working in tourist areas who
are not married see this as an opportunity, and are met with acceptance from the female tourists.

A source for Money

Many Egyptian men who practice this scam view the "wealthy" tourist as a source of income. They keep asking their "girl friend", "fiance" or "wife" for money for various excuses, just like a professional scammer would play a confidence game on a victim.

An Opporunity for Immigration

Some of those men want to get out of Egypt, and see their marriage as a way to gain residence and citizenship in a Western country. The economy in Egypt has been stagnant for decades, and poverty, lack of opportunity and the high cost of marriage lures some youth to trying these tricks.

Why it works?

There are several factors that work in favor of the Egyptian scammers here.

One factor that helps is that most Egyptian men look desirable to Western women, being of darker complexion than their compatriots. The fact that the foreigners are white blonds work in making the women attractive and desirable for Egyptian men.

Another factor is that the woman is coming to the tourist place to have a good time. It may be a break from stressful work or study, or perhaps a past relationship. This helps blind her to what is happening.

Yet another factor is the cultural differences which also create temporary blindness.

Moreover, those workers being away from their village or city of origin, where they would be observed by their extended family and friends tend to make it easier for them to engage in sexual relationships and scams without being scrutinized by acquaintenaces, and no stigma is attached to these behaviors.

Finally, the scammers have perfected their techniques over the years, and are very skillful at what they do.

Blacklists

Blacklists have emerged on the internet, to warn potential female tourists from known exploiters. These have all the faults of user contributed content on the internet in that they can be innacurate, biased, or even rigged by rivals or pranksters. However, in the absence of any other information, they can be useful, provided they are taken with a good deal of skepticism and research and common sense applied.

  • An overview article on what a "black list" is, at Arabia.pl.
  • Dezy House: Blacklist for Hurghada, in English.
  • Dezy House: Blacklist for Sharm El Sheikh, in English.
  • Wanted List of Egypt.
  • Egyptian Blacklist on Topix.
  • KunstKamera blacklist.

Happens everywhere, not only Egypt

Before someone gets the impression that Egypt is a cesspool, and Egyptians are crooks, let me say it is neither.

The problem above is not limited to Egypt by any means. Any country where tourists come in to spend money has its share of exploiters. The above black lists have a Turkish one, and a Tunisian one, and there are lots of stories about French, Italian and Spanish men exploiting women tourists as well.

Of course, there is also the Russian bride fraud targeting well to do men in the West.

So, the problem is universal, although this article focuses on female tourists to Egypt.

Final Thoughts

There are many non-Egyptian women married to Egyptian men happily, so over-generalizing from the cases mentioned, or from workers at tourist resort is wrong. Chances are you will be happy with an Egyptian as a husband if you met him in a more natural settings, e.g. while studying or working, and getting to meet his family as well.

The "artificial" environment in resorts, being on holiday, and surrounded by some scammers lend itself to the disasters described.

So, beware ...

I would like to warn women

Thu, 2012/04/05 - 17:42

I would like to warn women about a man called HANY FAWZY WAHPI FAKORY who is from Luxor. He used to work at the Sonesta Saint George then moved to the Nile Palace. He works for the massage and leisure. He is a Coptic Christian, used to have longish scraped back hair, it is now short. He is 26, he birthday is on the 21st of May or the 21st June, he likes to have both dates like our Queen lol!!!! He is 5ft 9ins, slim build, wears a gold chain, and is very goodlooking. He has a tiny chin goatee, but sometimes stubble. He is a VIRGIN, who has slept with many women.... I have been in a relationship with this man, and it has now surfaced, he is a prostitute who targets women in their 50's. I am 29, we was engaged with his Mother's blessing, but I am now informed, he already has a wife, English, 59, that has sent him over 11 thousand in cash. Hany does not work and now we know why, him and his friends GORGE HAMADA and MINA, all hang out at the Tututel, where Hany D.J's, His family are:

Brother; [redacted] 40 years old and wife is [redacted], two children called [redacted] aged 8(she) [redacted] aged 6(he)

Brother; [redacted] 42 Years old and wife [redacted], one child, [redacted], aged 2 years

Sister; [redacted] 42 years old and husband [redacted], three sons [redacted] 18 years, [redacted] 17 years and [redacted],10 years

THEY ARE IN ON THE SCAM< DO NOT BE FOOLED!!!!!

They all live at EL NOGOOM STREET, just off TELEVISION STREET, in a 4 storey house, with Hany and his Mother living on the ground floor, they share a bedroom, and he has a huge flatscreen t.v in there. His brother works at Sonesta, as a chief Accountant and he tips off his brother over rich vulnerable ladies. The whole family are in on this scam. I was met him in May 2010, that is when we decided to have a relationship. I did everything right, met his family, I was 27, and I thought this was love! I went back in the August 2010 to El Gouna Hurgada for 2 weeks, I accepted a ring, as commitment, I went back in April 2011, stayed 2 weeks in Luxor, his family wanted to do an engagement party, I said no, as it would cost over £2000, he took £500 for the apartment, which later i found only cost £250. I went over again to Luxor in August 2011, yet again, I paid, as he had taken 2 weeks off work, I sent nearly £4000 over to him, he even has my bank card, because I believed he was paying his college and court so he would do less time in the army, but now I know different. We spent January 2012 in El Gouna, alas I paid for everything, except this time, I booked the apartment off the net, as last time we stayed there he asked me to pay half, which was £500, and the place I booked, was £320, so he was scamming me from the very beginning! The apartment they use in El Gouna, is where they take all their women, its like a calender thing, they give a woman a mark for her looks and what shes like in bed, does she have money, any close family, etc, the reason why I found out, was because an anonymous text, from Egypt, gave me 3 numbers to ring. It said I was too lovely to be ripped off any longer, it said hany does love you, but he loves money and weird sex more!!! Each of these numbers belonged to women in their 50's, who he has been having sex with, both anally, and within groups with his friends. I am appalled, and totally repulsed that ME, a bright woman, fell for this man. I will be going back, and I have a leaflet, with his photo on, and name, etc etc, it will be distributed to any woman that i see. This man and his group of whores, thinks its ok to do this! Hany even rang my Mother to ask for my hand in marriage!! I had the church booked for next October, and being a Christian, and go to quite a high church, my vicar said, as it would be a Coptic and Church of England wedding, then Bishop David would love to witness it!! I am absolutely mortified!!! So please, please please, if you know of anyone with connections to this man, warn them! I ignored Isis's advice, and if i had of listened, he would not have got me there in January, or taken the last £1000 out of my account!!! Please remember, his family are all in on it, they live off his earnings.

[Edited to remove the names of family members. As there are several women supporting the above story, one of them a long time contributor to this thread, I will not remove the rest of the info -- Khalid]

I would like to warn women

OMG - what can I say? I have seen this man in action and tried to tell you as nicely as I could that he was not worth the effort. There are many men like Hany in Luxor and they will be found in the hotels as hospitality staff there for the good of the tourists, especially the women tourists and of course - themselves. I have watched this man chat up women no more than a few metres from me and his chat lines are predicable and laughable. Don't be fooled - they ony want sex & money. It is not love and romance for them it is "bizness".

The lady who was targeted By Hany Fawzy Wahpi Fakory

Sat, 2012/06/09 - 10:51

Thanks for warning women against Hany and I'm really sorry to hear about your experience. I know Hany (aquintance) and was very surprised to hear your tale. I've never liked him particularly and know him through a friend. I have known him since April 2010 and I can confirm that over the numereous trip to Luxor I have made between then and now, I have never seen him with the same woman. If you would not mind, I would appreciate speaking to you via email: dioxydioxy@gmail.com. Thanks.

Khalid, you can check the email address for the comments and see it was trolled, and from the same person. Vindictive and evil that woman was, and she was reported in England to the Police for what she did on facebook, getting into peoples accounts, removing photos of someones family, and pretending she was her, it caused big problems! And what she did on here, was low, but I have since found out, she was reported to Luxor Police and is well known, so it is up to you, but I can vouch for this man, for the last 4 years, that he is not what this woman has accused him of.

Not funny

Wed, 2012/04/11 - 20:10

Scamming women is not funny. Egyptian men that deliberately and meticulously do this to foreign women and destroy their lives in the process, have no morals or conscience and should be ashamed to be known as Egyptians.

It sounds like this man has got to you. Stay strong and continue to warn other women. You have been deceived and humiliated by this man so please don't let him take your strength of character as well - then he wins.

Thu, 2012/04/12 - 01:20

Thankyou Isis. When I have 3 women texting me to say he loves them, then yes, it does hurt. What hurts most, is i had to go to a sexual health clinic today, and be tested for everything, thats how much i trusted this man, to be wanting a child with him! I'm ashamed of myself for thinking with my heart and not my head, so ladies and gentlemen, please, whatever your age is, do not be conned by these men, they can and will destroy your life for money.
