A word of caution for female tourists visiting Egypt: be careful of the many of the men working in tourist areas in Egypt.
Although the vast majority of Egyptians have a high sense of honor and good conduct, it seems that tourist areas seem to attract a relatively high concentration of people with lax morals, who would exploit tourists in many ways. It can manifest itself as persistent aggressive begging, peddling cheap goods, charging 10X the normal prices for services and goods, and what this article focuses on: exploiting female tourists.
Looking at the bulk of the comments on my notes on compulsory army service in egypt they are mostly from non-Egyptian women who married (or intend to marry) an Egyptian man, and army service has become an obstacle.
So, once you here the word "habibti" (meaning "my love" in Arabic), and before you call him "Habibi", let alone go down the marriage route, read on below for more information.
The exploitation happens in many forms, but is normally centered around one of the following:
Easy and Free Sex
Many tourists come from countries where sex is more freely practiced outside of marriage. Youn g Egyptian men working in tourist areas who
are not married see this as an opportunity, and are met with acceptance from the female tourists.
A source for Money
Many Egyptian men who practice this scam view the "wealthy" tourist as a source of income. They keep asking their "girl friend", "fiance" or "wife" for money for various excuses, just like a professional scammer would play a confidence game on a victim.
An Opporunity for Immigration
Some of those men want to get out of Egypt, and see their marriage as a way to gain residence and citizenship in a Western country. The economy in Egypt has been stagnant for decades, and poverty, lack of opportunity and the high cost of marriage lures some youth to trying these tricks.
Why it works?
There are several factors that work in favor of the Egyptian scammers here.
One factor that helps is that most Egyptian men look desirable to Western women, being of darker complexion than their compatriots. The fact that the foreigners are white blonds work in making the women attractive and desirable for Egyptian men.
Another factor is that the woman is coming to the tourist place to have a good time. It may be a break from stressful work or study, or perhaps a past relationship. This helps blind her to what is happening.
Yet another factor is the cultural differences which also create temporary blindness.
Moreover, those workers being away from their village or city of origin, where they would be observed by their extended family and friends tend to make it easier for them to engage in sexual relationships and scams without being scrutinized by acquaintenaces, and no stigma is attached to these behaviors.
Finally, the scammers have perfected their techniques over the years, and are very skillful at what they do.
Blacklists
Blacklists have emerged on the internet, to warn potential female tourists from known exploiters. These have all the faults of user contributed content on the internet in that they can be innacurate, biased, or even rigged by rivals or pranksters. However, in the absence of any other information, they can be useful, provided they are taken with a good deal of skepticism and research and common sense applied.

Happens everywhere, not only Egypt
Before someone gets the impression that Egypt is a cesspool, and Egyptians are crooks, let me say it is neither.
The problem above is not limited to Egypt by any means. Any country where tourists come in to spend money has its share of exploiters. The above black lists have a Turkish one, and a Tunisian one, and there are lots of stories about French, Italian and Spanish men exploiting women tourists as well.
Of course, there is also the Russian bride fraud targeting well to do men in the West.
So, the problem is universal, although this article focuses on female tourists to Egypt.
Final Thoughts
There are many non-Egyptian women married to Egyptian men happily, so over-generalizing from the cases mentioned, or from workers at tourist resort is wrong. Chances are you will be happy with an Egyptian as a husband if you met him in a more natural settings, e.g. while studying or working, and getting to meet his family as well.
The "artificial" environment in resorts, being on holiday, and surrounded by some scammers lend itself to the disasters described.
So, beware ...

Don't be ashamed
Thu, 2012/04/12 - 22:24Please don't be ashamed. He's good at conning women and please warn the women that texted you about him. He is a common, garden variety Luxor Gigolo and he needs to be exposed for what he is. I will be in Luxor in May 2012. Is he still working at the Nile Palace? Might just have a few hours up my sleeve to see what he's up to now.

Hi, he does not work anymore,
Thu, 2012/04/12 - 23:35Hi, he does not work anymore, he had the sack for bothering women around the pool! He said it was because they were bothering him! He said I could have my money back in October, and has said that he is innocent, but I want justice for what he has done and I will get it! I have all the evidence and paperwork he signed saying it was a loan, also texts and emails saying the same, can a lawyer in Luxor help me?

Re: Around the pool
Sun, 2012/04/15 - 20:20LOL - every day he bothered women who were trying to read or sunbathe around the pool and I never saw one woman approach him! Both he and his partner in crime - the pool towel man, were always approaching bikini clad European and English girls. The older women didn't escape their attention either but only if they looked as if they had money.
Sorry to say, but I doubt that you will see your money again as the only way he could pay it back would be to con other female tourists. As for engaging a lawyer in Luxor, my advice is that not many are trustworthy and charge exorbitant fees for unsatisfactory services. You may be able to Google "Egypt lawyers" and find a practice in Cairo which has connections and an office in Luxor. Any legal fight in Egypt will assuredly be a long and protracted one. You could also post your question regarding a reliable lawyer in Luxor on the LUXOR4U forum. This site is supported by British expats living in Luxor and they may have some reliable advice for you in this regard.
Funny thing is these Luxor con men are always innocent when they are caught out.
All the best.

Men in Luxor
Mon, 2012/04/16 - 01:21I have written on here before but since then the situation in Luxor has changed a lot. There is very very little money here and many men get desperate. Best really to avoid conversing with anyone in the first place, they just want to find a gap and get in for any reason. Don't catch anyone's eye, walk with a male friend if possible and don't be afraid to be angry with anyone who blatantly asks for sex or makes suggestive remarks. Get taxis rather than walk on your own. I would also advise never to give your telephone number to anyone no matter how genuine they seem. By this I mean taxi drivers or anyone. don't bother calling, ask the hotel or someone to do it for you so that you don't inadvertantly give your number. If you do and it has happened to me you will get endless calls until you have to change your number. I am still here and happily married. My Egyptian husband turned out to be a diamond. He is a very clever business man who has managed to succeed here against all odds. We are very happy and we have been together over one year now through revolution, recalls to the military no end of events. I would also say take care if you do get involved that your boyfriend is not unduly religious. They are already getting a good deal and to expect you to change your beliefs for them is really not on. I have seen some women do that and find it crazy.

Military recalls?
Mon, 2012/04/16 - 10:41This part about military recalls have me worried. They are very uncommon, unless Egypt is at war.
It could be a sign of something fishy going on.

Nothing 'fishy' at all. You
Mon, 2012/04/16 - 11:40Nothing 'fishy' at all. You could only think that if you are completely unaware of the current situation and that of the last year since the revolution. Did you see the military police in Tahrir square? the ones in black. yes he was one of them, there are not so many from each town as only the best are selected, and can send you photos of him in the uniform, his gun number too if you really want proof. But why do I need to bother to proves something to you? Your cynicism and jealousy is getting ridiculous, but quite typical of Egyptians sad to say. He and all those recalled into the military police have really suffered, had to sleep on the streets very often, exposed to nerve gas (remember that?)was in severe danger, had days of no sleep, seen death on a daily basis and I don't like the stupid attitude you are having against the very people who are protecting your society. It has been already bad enough that the military police have been depicted as great evils in Egypt by the media all over the world as unwitting supporters of the military regime, but they did keep the peace and made democracy possible. I have been living here in Egypt and completely aware of every aspect of the political situation, unlike you it seems.

Jealous? Me?
Mon, 2012/04/16 - 12:55Ha ha ha ha ha ...
Jealous? Me? Why should I be? Tell me ...
This is my site, and I am the one who created this page to protect some foolish tourists from the evils of few who prey on them.
I am not saying with any degree of certainty that your husband is one of them. I am saying that this is one of the signs : absences with military recall being an excuse.
And the military police are not in black uniform. The black unifrom is Central Security Forces (equivalent to riot police elsewhere), who are under the command of the Ministry of Interior, not the army.
the military police wear regular army uniform, khaki or camouflage, with red beret or helmet.
And it is very rare that a conscripted solider with the rank of private would be given any firearms at all. It is mostly officers who carry those. Privates would be given sticks, shields, ...etc.
Know what others are saying before responding to them. What you thought may not be what they are saying.

Bravo Khalid
Tue, 2012/04/17 - 22:53Your comments echo my thoughts on this relationship exactly. Prolonged absences and in and out of the military are huge warning signs that the relationship is not exactly what the writer thinks it is. How could the Egyptian husband be a successful businessman in Luxor and also be in the Armed forces on a whim? A very odd account of circumstances and I can guarantee that she won't listen and heed the warning signs.

Warning signs ...
Tue, 2012/04/17 - 23:04Yes, Isis, thanks.
She does not know the difference between Central Security Forces and Military Polices. Given she has been in the country for a year, and that even many women in Egypt would not know the difference, she may have an excuse.
But he has a gun. Only officers are issued guns. The CSF soldiers are given automatic rifles (Kalashnikov style ones), and only for the duration of a task (e.g. a shift protecting a museum for example). They check them out before and check them in after, with the serial number of the weapon. They NEVER EVER take it home. The ministry of interior and the army are control freaks and very red tapish about these things.
Moreover, CSF soldiers almost never get recalled. EVER. They suffer through hell for 3 years and then are let go. They are normally the most dull (for lack of a better word) of the lot, so that they can be given orders to brutally beat fellow citizens with no conscious to torture them.
Military police may have had recalls, but yet again, they are never issued weapons, if he is a soldier.
He can't be an officer either. Very remote chance for that.
I fell she is being conned, and her first instinct is being defensive because of jealousy and all that blah blah.
Wish we were wrong about these cases. Being right means someone is suffering.

Exactly Khalid
Wed, 2012/04/18 - 01:24As I said - she is only listening to what he is saying and is blinkered. Defending a relationship is a sure sign that all is not okay within. I'm not saying that all men in Luxor are con men but the greater percentage with foreign women seem to be very good at deceit. Her Egyptian husband's disappearances will certainly relate to his Egyptian wife and children living in a surrounding village (could it be a village on the West Bank starting with "A" and well known for this type of behavior perhaps?). I also cannot think of a businessman in Luxor doing well especially not in tourism and that also relates to the bazaar owners who feel the flow on effect of the lack of tourists. Other than a few professionals not many people in Luxor have money at the moment.
