Rate of contributions accelerating: what the commit messages say ...

  1. Home

By Khalid on 2008/10/31 - 22:23, last updated 2008/10/31 - 22:31

Three data points:

Commit #50,000: Jan, 4, 2007.

Commit #100,000: Feb 9, 2008.

Commit #150,000: Oct 30, 2008.

Took 13 months and one week for the second 50,000 commits, but only 8 months and 3 weeks for the third 50,000.

So, the rate of code contributions is accelerating.

There's some slightly weird

Sat, 2008/11/01 - 11:36

There's some slightly weird data in there: commit 1000 was in July 2003, and commit 2000 was in April 2001. Commit 3000 was in 2004, and commit 4000 was back in 2003.

However, other interesting statistics:
- In 2005 it took about a month for each thousand commits, now it takes 4-5 days.
- Even at the start of 2008, this was 8 days

<?php$n = 0;print "date,commit\n";while ($n <= 150000) {  if (preg_match('#<h3>(.*) (.*), (.*)</h3>#', file_get_contents('http://drupal.org/cvs?commit=' . ($n+=1000)), $bits)) {    print "$bits[2] $bits[1] $bits[3],$n\n";  }}?>

Inconsistency

Sat, 2008/11/01 - 13:07

I have seen this inconsistency before. See my post on 100,000. Perhaps due to an attempt at automatic conversion of old history or some such thing.

The trend though is correct when you use sufficiently high numbers. See also my post on 120,000.
