Arun Sarin, CEO of Vodafone, the largest cell phone provider in the world, is urging handset makers to cut down the number of operating systems they use.

He wants the 30 to 40 to go down to 3-5. Fewer operating systems would ease the job of developers, who would
only have to design software to work in several different iterations.

He praised Apple for raising the bar for the user interface.

In open source software communities, choice is often touted as a good thing.

While I agree with this in principle, I do not think that it
is always the case.

When choice is bad: Expense, confusion, low adoption

If choice results in confusing the adopters, increasing the
cost for developers, and fragmenting the market, resulting in less adoption, then it is not a good
thing.

Yesterday we had a major snow storm that dumped 20 cm of snow. Not the first one that does that. Several other storms have done the same earlier.

Note that the rate of commits is accelerating. This repository started sometime in 2003, and it took more than 3 years for the first 50,000 commits, yet it took a mere 13 months for the last 50,000 commits (Jan 4, 2007 to Feb 9 2008).

Thanks to Corrin of Rain City Studios, I came to know of the Courtyard Boston South. The folk from Rain City Studios (including Bryght), along with Now Public, will be staying at that venue.

Moreover, Corrin arranged for a block of rooms at the special rate of $129 a night, and a shuttle service to the conference will be arranged too. This is really convenient so as to avoid learning about bus stops and other aspects of mega city public transportation.

I use the Linux dump program to do backups. I use a set of scripts making the process as unattended as can be. The scripts send me an email with the result so I am informed of the outcome.

Viewing today's email status message in Gmail had a hilarious surpise in it. Look at the ad on the right hand side.

Google thought that the email subject and text here has "Dump" in it, an display an ad about "She dumped me" ... "Get your girl back".
