  2. Internet Scams and Fraud
  3. Another form of Internet Fraud: Usenet Forsale Scam

By Khalid on 2006/08/08 - 10:12, last updated 2006/08/08 - 10:12

Here is a classic scam from Craigslist. They offer to buy your item you advertised via classified for more money than you ask for ($375 in my case, he offered $500).They even give you a bleeding heart story about wife dying in accident.

Kindly get back to me immediately you receive my e-mail and i will like you to take it off craigslist for auction cos am serious in buying it.So let me have your full infomation ofr pyment to be made.... Craigslist Scam On New User!!!

Thu, 2014/09/18 - 21:22

I am in fact a new user here on Craigslist, ever since my brother convinced me not to use Ebay anymore to sell items. I have recently tried to sell items on Ebay, and my brother informed me of the fees they have on there, and how they constantly bother you to pay them back. Anyway he told me that Craigslist is much safer and they do not have fees.

Anyway, just last week, I listed my Nintendo DSi for sale on here and I too received a text similar to yours, but from a different number: (971) 307-7728. The text I got read: "Still up for a kindly sale please contact me via email box (ainlinfuroptyo@gmail.com) this is my sister phone that is why let me know the final asking price"

I actually ended up emailing the person back and the name on the email I received said "STEPHANIE HALL" and the response she sent read: " Great!. I'm going on a business trip but I will instruct my assistant to prepare and mail your payment which I'm sure you will get in about 2-3 days business days. I'll add $20 extra for the delay. I'll pay by M O or cashier check so send me your info (i.e full name, mailing address and your phone number) so payment can be mailed out immediately. I will also make arrangement for pick-up which will be after you must have received and cashed the payment.Awaiting your info."

I basically ended up falling for this scam, because I had no clue(none at all) that is was a scam in the first place. I recently spent 3 days attempting to send the money via Western Union as she advised me to do and I kept telling her "sorry" because it was taking so long and I was confused; I found out that Western Union doesn't take checks, only debit/credit cards or actual cash and I had none of those. Anyway, today is the day I just found out about this scam as I was driving home. The radio was talking about check scams, where businesses will send you an enormous amount of money and tell you to wire/send a portion of it to them via Western Union and then when I got home a bit later, I began looking scams up on the internet and came across this exact one, one I was also having trouble with.

Now that I have read up on scams and have gained some information about them, I will definitely know a scam next time I see one and will be able to rid myself of it.

Scam

Wed, 2012/07/11 - 17:46

I was just scamed out of $1,550. I didn't know it was a scam he was really nice and offered to pick it up unlike the guys that keep contacting most of y'all. I actually believed him when he said he accidently made a check out with a little to much and to send it back via this western union thing. This needs to stop, I love Craig's list but seriously people need to be careful I don't want other people to end up with no college fund after working the entire summer like me. This has got to stop.

Online Classified Scam

Thu, 2012/07/26 - 18:57

lonelyhome03@gmail.com emailed me. He tried to buy something off of me sight unseen. He was going to mail a money order which is not a problem, after all, some people are bed-ridden. He was going make the total an additional $40, which is not a problem. Slightly concerning, but not a problem some people consider the thing valuable enough to pay a bit extra as a deposit.

The red flag is when he said he would arrange for delivery later. "arrange for", not "my uncle will pick it up". And why wouldn't you just pay cash or money order when you or someone you know pick it up? That's the second red flag.

Here's the solution: Email the person back and ask 1-3 bits of info about them. If they give you nothing, it's more likely than not a scam.
