Craigslist classified for used car: Cheque fraud scam

  1. Home
  2. Internet Scams and Fraud
  3. Another form of Internet Fraud: Usenet Forsale Scam

By Khalid on 2006/09/09 - 18:28, last updated 2006/09/09 - 18:28

I recently listed a car for sale on craigslist and other local classified ad services. This is one reply I got, which is clearly an attempt at scamming:

From: Dave Smith <goldenwum12@yahoo.com>Subject: [The title of the classified ad for the car]Hello,I just viewed your car posting on craigslist and i have interest on it i will like to know the present condition and two more pictures of the car before i proceed with the transaction. Thanks

Problem is, the scammer is not very smart. I did not posted pictures to begin with, so there are no more pictures. So, I sent this reply:

From: meTo: Dave Smith <goldenwum12@yahoo.com>Pictures attached.

I intentionally did not attach any pictures. A genuine buyer would have noticed this of course. Instead, the scammer proceeded with the next step, revealing his true intent:

From Dave Smith <goldenwum12@yahoo.com>To: meHello,Thanks for your reply i got all your information about the car and am ok with it, i will be making your payment today i need your full name and address to make your payment today through electronic check i will handle the shipment myself. All what you need about the mode of payment is to get a Blank check paper and magnetic versa ink to print the check, the check will be sent to your email and you get it printed from it. You can get this materials from the following stores.1. Office Depot2. Office Max3. Staples Store 4. Stationery Store5. Compusa. When you get this materials you can print the check out and immediately after the printing you can then get the check cashed at your Bank or any bank of america branch around you I will wait for you to confirm and clear the check. The payment will be in excess as i will want you to contact my shipper with the excess fund for shipping the car after you must have confirmed and cashed the check.i will wait for your bank to clear the check so you can deduct your own money and send the excess fund to the shipper via Western Union Money Transfer so as to cover the cost of shipping the car from your place to it's destination. I will add extra 100$ for the purchasing of check paper and magnetic versa ink.For more information about the mode of payment you can check the website www.qchex.com and know more about it .Dont worry i will handle the shipping myself with my shipper. you can IM on this ID goldenwum10@yahoo.com or call me on 9145954296 for more information. Thanks and God Bless

This is a classic scam where a fake cheque is sent to the victim for more than the amount owed, and the difference is to be wired to the scammer.

Scam offer to buy vehicle

Wed, 2009/03/04 - 16:04

This board performs a great service. Thanx Khalid, whoever you are! Google maps provided the link that got me here.

I imagine the so called E-check works the same as a counterfeit cashiers check. Victim cashes it, couple days later the bank discovers it's no good & the victim has to repay the bank. Meanwhile, the scammer received the "excess amount" in cash.

Unsolicited advice: Block the sender & delete the message. Any response will only generate more of the same.

Scam vehicle purchase offer below. Quotation marks are mine.

"Thanks for responding to my mail,I am okay with it And hope it is ok as you said. I would like to purchase it from you as soon as possible. (I am intrested and ready to buy it now) The easiest way for me to pay is probably E-Check from my Bank and be rest assured that my payment is in safe hands. I know there are a lot of scams so I have no problem with you waiting for the E-Check to go through at your bank or anything. Here is a thing from the E-Check. You will probably need to Purchase Business Check Paper, at any store below in your area,

(1) Shopping Mall
(2) Stationery Store
(3) Office Depot
(4)Office max

For $20 and it will be added to your asking price with an extra offer of $30 for the stress and strain. Once you purchase the business check paper. I will email you the check and you will have it printed. Then proceed to your bank and cash the check. As regarded the shipping, my shipper will handle the shipment once we agree on the deal and as soon as my payment gets to you. So i will need your your Full Name and Address with a Valid Email Address to send the simple step on how to print the check to your email which you can print and cash within 2 days after you must have purchased the business check paper. And do get back to me withthe Pics of the item so that my client will be Able to see What he is paying off Kindly get the posting deleted if you are ok with my mode of payment. I will await your email. Please Email me back and let me know if this helps.

Best Regard

Car Buyer Scams

Wed, 2009/03/04 - 17:35

I recently post an ad on craigslist for selling my 2005 Honda Accord. I got a guy call me and he came to see the car as well. We bargained on the price and finally agreed to a price. Next he tells me that he is in the business of buying and selling cars and he wants me to drive my car to a ford dealership in Tustin. He says that that dealership will buy my car, title and issue me a check. He even gave me a name of a person i am supposed to meet up at this Ford dealership. I checked with the dealership anonymously and this person I am asked to meet by this buyer is really there. I have never come across this before. Also he tells me that he will not be there at the dealership for this transaction. He tells me this and seems to be in a hurry to complete the transaction. Supposedly this person i am asked to meet at the dealership is a office manager and does not deal with used cars at all.

This buyer tells me to do the following:

Go to the ford dealership with my car and title, keys
Meet up with the concerned person
Do the paper work and I will get the check.

I am not having a good feeling about, anyone who has experienced something similar please let me know

Thanks,
Bill
Do the paper work, hand over the car, title and keys

New Bob Edwards Scam just got this A.M.

Mon, 2009/05/18 - 09:36

Sounds good, i would like to purchase it from you as soon as possible. (I am intrested and ready to buy it now) The easiest way for me to pay is probably Cashier Check from my Bank(Bank Of America).I know there are a lot of scams so I have no problem with you waiting for the Cashier Check to go through at your bank or anything, then you will have to proceed to your bank and cash the check when you receive it.I will wait for your bank to verify and clear the Cashier Check before we proceed with shipment. As my Bank Operator informed me that it will clear immidiately at your bank as it was from my account with Bank Of America.Which is Confirms to All American Banking Association rules and standards and attach a pics of it for me to see how beautifull it is and email me your full name and address with your phone number for me to send you the check

Please Email me back and let me know if this helps

Best Regards

They've got a couple websites up, Climax oil & Sub-sea Dredging, at first glance, look legit but background check reveals the fraud, see hereunder.

The sites hereunder imply that Sub-sea Dredging Limited and Climax Oil Limited own the referenced rigs but the information in red....

http://subseadredging.com/alert.aspx

http://youngrecruiting.com/services.aspx

Sub-sea Dredging Limited in aspirations of being an integrated oil field services provider just recently added Contract Drilling Services to her Product Service lines. To consolidate our presence in this Service area, we acquired two Swamp Drilling Rigs namely Searex VI and Searex XII. Searex XII is ready for mobilization while Searex VI is undergoing various levels of repair and maintenance.

Oando, Nigeria's leading integrated energy solutions provider, has just taken delivery of an additional rig named the "Constitution" purchased in July 2008 at a cost of US $53.5 million. This brings to three the number of rigs in the company's fleet, underpinning its commitment to providing world-class oil field services in the Gulf of Guinea. The three rigs, which include the Searex 12 and Searex 6, are for swamp operations.
The rigs, Searex 6 and Searex 12, with a water depth rating of 25 feet and a drilling depth of 22,000 feet, cost the company over N11 Billion Naira and will be fully managed by Oando Energy Services, in partnership with Frazimex (a local company), with technical assistance provided by Transocean International, a global player in the Oil and Gas industry in Nigeria and beyond.

Subsea Dredging Limited Job Scam

Thu, 2009/04/23 - 03:04

Any job offers from Subsea Dredging are scams whereby they request you to pay a portion of the visa application.
They will take your money and you will never hear from them again.
They are clever enough to even have a website. Dont be fooled, with a bit of scrutiny you can spot the bullshite.

Glad I Googled

Sun, 2010/02/07 - 22:43

Just got a interest for a camera package I'm selling from the same "Nancy Ewles". It seemed a little sketchy. She asked the condition in her first email then responded in a broken english note about sending it to her son and now wants my Paypal account. Going to tell "her" cash only, local.
