Here is a series of emails sent to us by a prospective victim. Her name is withheld for privacy reasons. You can see that the method in this case is charging courier fees upfront. In other cases, it is account opening fees, government fees, bribes, ...etc., but it is all the same: upfront money for a prize that does not exist.

Here are the e-mail's sent to me and responses from me:----------------------------------------------------------------This is public limited Organisation of is own with license of registration like yours. So we have the right to transact business to any part of the world. The Governemt have given us a go ahead to carryout our business. On the other hand,i want to inform you there is a deadline for the claim of prize money. okFrank Harry----------------------------------------------------------------[name withheld] wrote:Then is there some government number i can contact to verify that thesewinnings are real?----------------------------------------------------------------From: GLOBAL EXPRESS [mailto:globalexpressoffice101@yahoo.co.uk]Sent: Wednesday, June 13, 2007 11:47 AMTo: [name withheld]Subject: RE: GLOBAL EXPRESS COURIER SERVICES INT. With regards to this, there are two options open to you, you are required to select the most convenient of the two.The options, together with their associated conditions are presented below:Option 1:Courier of your winning draft to you via any of this channel listedbelow:First class delivery:48 hoursMailing..............................................£300.00Insurance.........................................£250.00Vat (5%)...........................................£100.00TOTAL.............................................£.650.00TIME OF DELIVERY.............................48 HOURSPremium class delivery:72 hoursMailing ........................................... £200.00Insurance.......................................... £150.00Vat (5%).......................................... £150.00TOTAL............................................. £550.00TIME OF DELIVERY..................................72HOURSNormal class delivery: 120 hoursMailing ;............................................£200.00Insurance..........................................£150.00Vat (5%)..............................................£50.00TOTAL.................................................£400.00TIME OF DELIVERY...................................120 HOURSThe insurance company declined reverse payment for the courier, stating that it is against their professional policy towards ensuring the safe delivery of the draft to you. That if a reverse payment is made, and something goes wrong, that we/you cannot sue the courier company or insurance company to recover the full value of the fund asstipulated in the draft since payment for insurance cover was not made at point of mailing. With the above reason, reverse payment is ruled out.Forward the cost of mailing your draft with any of the courier channel cost you choose above to us.Option 2:The said amount claim £420,000.00 (FOUR HUNDRED AND TWENTY THOUSAND POUND STERLING) would be wired to your bank account via swift bank transfer.Condition: The cost of COT (commission of transfer) being charged by our transferring bank, which is (i.e £1000) of the cash being transferred will be paid by you.Note that your prize is protected by a hardcover insurance policy, which makes it impossible to deduct any amount from the money before it has been remitted to you. This means that the above charges cannot be deducted from the prize and hence must be provided by you before your prize is transferred to you. Please respond to this email by making a selection from the two options above. Also attach a scanned copy of either your driver's licence, international passport (photo page) or any other legally identifying document. Also be reminded that the deadline for the claiming of winnings is exactly one week after the receipt of this email. about their winning and also sharing their pin numbers. As a result of this,
these friends try to claim the lottery on behalf of the real winners. The
Microsoft Lottery Corporation has reached a decision from headquarters that
any double claim discovered by the Lottery Board will result to the canceling
of that particular winning, making a loss for both the double claimer and the
real winner, as it is taken that the real winner was the informer to the
double claimer about the lottery. So you are hereby strongly advised once more
to keep your winnings strictly confidential until you claim your prize.

Congratulations
