Warning to female tourists thinking of marrying Egyptians

  1. Home

By Khalid on 2008/11/22 - 20:17, last updated 2008/12/28 - 15:53

A word of caution for female tourists visiting Egypt: be careful of the many of the men working in tourist areas in Egypt.

Although the vast majority of Egyptians have a high sense of honor and good conduct, it seems that tourist areas seem to attract a relatively high concentration of people with lax morals, who would exploit tourists in many ways. It can manifest itself as persistent aggressive begging, peddling cheap goods, charging 10X the normal prices for services and goods, and what this article focuses on: exploiting female tourists.

Looking at the bulk of the comments on my notes on compulsory army service in egypt they are mostly from non-Egyptian women who married (or intend to marry) an Egyptian man, and army service has become an obstacle.

So, once you here the word "habibti" (meaning "my love" in Arabic), and before you call him "Habibi", let alone go down the marriage route, read on below for more information.

The exploitation happens in many forms, but is normally centered around one of the following:

Easy and Free Sex

Many tourists come from countries where sex is more freely practiced outside of marriage. Youn g Egyptian men working in tourist areas who
are not married see this as an opportunity, and are met with acceptance from the female tourists.

A source for Money

Many Egyptian men who practice this scam view the "wealthy" tourist as a source of income. They keep asking their "girl friend", "fiance" or "wife" for money for various excuses, just like a professional scammer would play a confidence game on a victim.

An Opporunity for Immigration

Some of those men want to get out of Egypt, and see their marriage as a way to gain residence and citizenship in a Western country. The economy in Egypt has been stagnant for decades, and poverty, lack of opportunity and the high cost of marriage lures some youth to trying these tricks.

Why it works?

There are several factors that work in favor of the Egyptian scammers here.

One factor that helps is that most Egyptian men look desirable to Western women, being of darker complexion than their compatriots. The fact that the foreigners are white blonds work in making the women attractive and desirable for Egyptian men.

Another factor is that the woman is coming to the tourist place to have a good time. It may be a break from stressful work or study, or perhaps a past relationship. This helps blind her to what is happening.

Yet another factor is the cultural differences which also create temporary blindness.

Moreover, those workers being away from their village or city of origin, where they would be observed by their extended family and friends tend to make it easier for them to engage in sexual relationships and scams without being scrutinized by acquaintenaces, and no stigma is attached to these behaviors.

Finally, the scammers have perfected their techniques over the years, and are very skillful at what they do.

Blacklists

Blacklists have emerged on the internet, to warn potential female tourists from known exploiters. These have all the faults of user contributed content on the internet in that they can be innacurate, biased, or even rigged by rivals or pranksters. However, in the absence of any other information, they can be useful, provided they are taken with a good deal of skepticism and research and common sense applied.

  • An overview article on what a "black list" is, at Arabia.pl.
  • Dezy House: Blacklist for Hurghada, in English.
  • Dezy House: Blacklist for Sharm El Sheikh, in English.
  • Wanted List of Egypt.
  • Egyptian Blacklist on Topix.
  • KunstKamera blacklist.

Happens everywhere, not only Egypt

Before someone gets the impression that Egypt is a cesspool, and Egyptians are crooks, let me say it is neither.

The problem above is not limited to Egypt by any means. Any country where tourists come in to spend money has its share of exploiters. The above black lists have a Turkish one, and a Tunisian one, and there are lots of stories about French, Italian and Spanish men exploiting women tourists as well.

Of course, there is also the Russian bride fraud targeting well to do men in the West.

So, the problem is universal, although this article focuses on female tourists to Egypt.

Final Thoughts

There are many non-Egyptian women married to Egyptian men happily, so over-generalizing from the cases mentioned, or from workers at tourist resort is wrong. Chances are you will be happy with an Egyptian as a husband if you met him in a more natural settings, e.g. while studying or working, and getting to meet his family as well.

The "artificial" environment in resorts, being on holiday, and surrounded by some scammers lend itself to the disasters described.

So, beware ...

It would be worth spending a little time to read previous posts on this site. Lots of the scammed women have said similar to you. I am sure that you not being repulsive is an added bonus. My own ex, during my first trip to visit him, paid for meals, taxis, nights out and excursions, and we didn't sleep together as we were still getting to know each other. Requests for money came much further down the line. Yes it is flattering to have a young man tell you that you are still hot! Keep your feet on the ground though, in the main Egyptian men marry women much younger than them, but only once he can provide her with a fully furnished flat, gold dowry, and he has an income. I'm sure you don't want to be the one paying for all of that. Good luck.

More Red Flags

Thu, 2012/06/28 - 22:15

You made a big mistake telling this man how much you earn and I gauge from your follow-up post that you are not yet taking in all the warnings. Most Egyptian men in the tourist areas are fluent in languages other than English as they need to be to continue working so this is not unusual and not attributed to a university degree.

As for advice - an honorable Egyptian man would not make advances to a woman in a relationship with another man and they also would not sleep with a woman until they were married or at the very least had a signed, registered and stamped Orfi paper. You will not always be looking at the sunset over the Red Sea as when the dust settles as Egyptian life is very hard, work is scarce and every Egyptian man is fighting for every piastre and pound that he can find and they will be exchanged for your hard earned euros. The men in these tourist and resort areas talk amongst themselves and their network is extensive. They notify each other of women that they consider that they can set up as targets for their scams and you were a target.

You are now in the grooming process. After he has your heart, trust and confidence, in a few months time he will ask you for money for an operation that his mother will need or that he needs to pay the army so that he doesn't have to do military service and these amounts could be anything from 10,000 LE to 100,000 LE or more if he is game enough to ask. He could also need to pay the police money and baksheesh to keep him out of jail for not paying a loan and he will need a laptop so that he can see you on Skype every day. An iPhone will be a necessity of course because his phone is faulty and he sold the one you gave him plus he will need designer clothes so that he can get a better job. Then he will need a car to start up a business and also a flat so that you can stay there as well when you visit and it goes on and on. You will be fleeced and at the same time he will have other foreign "wives" that don't know of your existence and they you.

"As I said I thought I had won the lottery when this handsome, fit guy told me how much he loved me, I never went to Egypt looking for a man but I now feel like I did when I was 20, he flatters me and treats me like his queen." Please ask yourself this - "how on earth can this man profess to love after meeting me for a few days?" This is a scam and it is laughable as he is following the same old pattern - declaring his undying love, writing poems and love letters, can hardly wait for you to come back to Egypt, telling you that you are beautiful and all the time planning how he can spend your money. He is only 24 years old - he is a boy and you are a mature educated woman and he loves only your money and the future that your money can bring him - you are being scammed!

I see nothing promising in your story. Please save your current relationship and get on with your life before you are caught up in a current of events that will be devastating for you if you do not put a halt to it now.

Fri, 2012/06/29 - 15:39

I keep asking Khalid to take down comments from pages 58 and 59 and he ignores me. The comments are untrue, made up by vicious old women who wanted to destroy a mans reputation, because he turned them down. If this page was in the U.K, I could do something, but alas, I can't, as Khalid chooses to let innocent people be hurt and have their lives affected by allowing shit false lies to stay on his site!!! :-(

This man has a history and if you choose not to believe it then that is your choice. Other women as potential targets need to be aware that he is a predator of women in Luxor.

A woman uses my details, and

Sun, 2012/07/01 - 07:51

A woman uses my details, and my partners name for her own twisted sick reasons, and this man has to pay the price of all this embarrassment? This is a joke, and I've forwarded a complaint, yet again to Khalid, no doubt he will ignore it, as Isis, you say you saw this man in action, doing what exactly? At which hotel? I don't even know if you are the same woman who contacted me, giving a sad story, that you were married, and how I ruined your relationship, and then I caught her out on the date she was with him, and low and behold, I was there at that time lol!!! She is 64 FFS!!! EEEEEWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!
Some sad lonely past it women go out there looking for men, end of, we have all seen it, and not only is it disgusting, its an embarrassment for Western women in general, to be tarnished the same way. These women, if they can't pay for a guy to sleep with them, then they get nasty, and report the men to their managers, and God help them if they are Christian.
You say you are married to an Egyptian, is he Christian or Coptic? Do you live out there, or just holiday there? Is your husband living with you 'here'? How old are you, and how old is your husband? Do you have children together?
As you seem to know a lot about my fiance, because of that twisted old whore, its only fair that you tell us how come you are the agony aunt to Western women who visit Luxor!!! :-)

Mon, 2012/07/02 - 02:39

Isis, answer the questions before you give people advice! How old are you? Do you live in Egypt with your husband? Is he Muslim? How did you meet him? You stay at hotels in Luxor to 'witness' these men at work, so I'm guessing your Egyptian husband stays with you too.... ;-)

You started this thread and exploded with all the angry accusations. Not my problem. He is your problem! I have posted on here before about my marriage and relationship with Egypt and not going through it all again. Please show some maturity in this matter.
