Solution to Magic Jack Plus Error 23

Do you have a Magic Jack Plus?

Do you get a message "Error 23" when you lift the phone hand set, instead of a dial tone?

Read on for a solution ...

This tutorial assumes that you can find your way around your router's configuration menus from a browser. Refer to your router's documentation to find out the specific IP address for your router and where the relevant options are.

Step 1: Find the MAC Address for the Magic Jack Plus

Like any Ethernet devices, there is a so called MAC address assigned to your Magic Jack Plus.

First, we need to find out the MAC address for your specific Magic Jack Plus.

This would be under the "DHCP Table" or similar.

The MAC address would be something like 6c:33:a9:xx:xx:xx.

This will be used in the next step.

Step 2: Reserve the IP address to the MAC address

Now, look for where you can reserve the IP address assigned to this MAC address. This means that whenever the router is restarted, or the Magic Jack Plus is unplugged from power, it will have the same UP address assigned to it.

Then we proceeed to the next step.

Step 3: Configure NAT to direct ports to the Magic Jack device

Now, go into where the "NAT" or "SUA" settings in your router are, and assign ports 5060 and 5070 to go to the IP address that you reserved

Make sure you save the settings after each of the above steps.

Now you should have a dial tone when you lift the phone's handset.

Here's some additional info.

This is a great general solution to Magic Jack error 23, but some additional info may be helpful. For a specific example, I have a Comcast home network with a single public IP address and private IP internal addressing. Comcast actually supplied the gateway (a combination cable modem and router), and it must have passed ports 5060 & 5070 by default because MJ worked fine for years. (The MJ is directly plugged into one of the LAN ports on the gateway. However, Comcast has recently upgraded the speed of its services in this area, and has been offering a no-charge upgrade on a new gateway. The new gateway (Technicolor 8305) is much better, BUT does NOT pass those ports by default. So ...
First note that you want to assign UDP ports 5060 and 5070. You do not need to assign any TCP ports. In "Port Forwarding" on the Technicolor gateway you are asked to name the "service" and a range of ports. I entered two separate UDP ports, one from 5060 to 5060, one from 5070 to 5070, and both named "MagicJack". (You can use any name you like. It's necessary but has no effect.) Assign both to the permanent fixed IP address of the MJ. Reserving the IP address to the MAC address is one way to set up the fixed IP. Another way, which is easier on some routers, is to assign the desired IP as a "fixed" IP to MJ in the area called something such as "Connected Devices" in your router. I like to use the low numbered IPs (192.168.0.2 through 192.168.0.5) for MJ, Home Theater, an old HP 3000 minicomputer, and printer. Then be sure to set the DHCP range to NOT include those IPs.

Comcast/XFinity -Port Forwarding Works

Thanks. Tried the DMZ method after reserving the IP. Didn't work. Port Forwarding was the way to go. For Comcast/XFinity customers you need to set UDP for 5060 and 5070. Previous comment had the detailed instructions.

Thanks!

Solution to Magic Jack Plus Error 23

Wife, who is tech literate but not a network geek, spent over an hour on the phone trying to fix this with Magic Jack tech support. Five minutes to find this page with a goggle search and 10 minutes to follow it and we have a dial tone again. Bravo, thank you for the quick solution.

Impossible ...

It is impossible to make a video, because there are too many variations in the home routers, and specifics of what applies to one will be different from the other.
