Hindi words of Arabic origin

  1. Home

By Khalid on 2013/04/10 - 22:11, last updated 2020/07/03 - 19:32

Having worked with many people from India and Pakistan in the 1990s, I was often fascinated by words that sounded Arabic in origin. When asking about the meaning, they were indeed Arabic. And I could detect more words in the few Hindi Bollywood movies that I have seen as well.

Arabic influence on Hindi may have been via several avenues. One was via Farsi (Persian) as an intermediate, having been the language of the court for the Mughal emperors. Another was through Muslim scholars using these words from Arabic texts and they made their way into the vernacular.

Whatever the avenues are, here are some words that I did recognize, with the Arabic spelling and Arabic meaning, which the Hindi derives from, but may deviate somewhat from.

waqt = وقت = time
admi = آدمي = human being
insaan = انسان = human being
takriban = تقريبا = approximately, almost
leken = لكن = but
shaitan = شيطان = devil, satan
mabhoom = مبهوم = hidden, unknown future event
shukriya = شكر = thank you, not an exact copy, "ya" is added
khabar = خبر = news item
akhbar = اخبار = plural of above
ajab = عجب = wonder, strange occurrence
ajib = عجيب = strange, derived from above root
ajaib = عجايب = plural of ajab, same root. Punjabi/Sikh name
aql = عقل = mind, intellect
dimag = دماغ = intellect in Hindi, though the Arabic word could mean "head", "skull", and "brain" as well
azam = عظم = great
azmat = عظمة = greatness, derived from above root
silsila = سلسلة = chain, Hindi = series of events
mushkil = مشكل = problem, unclear
hal = حال = condition, state
mahabat = محبة = love
kharab = خراب = destruction
bilkol = بالكل = "all of it", derives from كل
ya3ni = يعني = which means, meaning, also a "conversation filler"
intezar = انتظار = waiting for
mohtaram = محترم = respected
mukarram = مكرم = from كرم karam, generosity
sahib = صاحب = companion, friend, used as Mister in Hindi
adab = آداب = good manners
adat = عادات = customs
aynak = عين = from eye (ain), means spectacles in Hindi
akhir = آخر = the end
alam = عالم = universe
alim = عالم = scholar, scientist, learned person
asal = أصل = origin
asali = أصلي = original
ashiq = عاشق = lover
aziz = عزيز = dear
filhal = فى الحال = currently, at the moment
marhoom = مرحوم = is often used when referring to people who have passed on not unlike allah yarhamuh. Same usage as in rural Egypt
kalam = كلام = speech, especially the words of a poet
qalam = قلم = pen
kursi = كرسي = chair
ijazat = اجازة = permission
hayat = حياة = life
Ishq = عشق = deep love, extreme passion
saltanat = سلطنة = kingdom
qubul = قبول = agree
matlab = مطلب = concern, meaning
mashhoor = مشهور = famous, known
hirasat = حراسة = guarding
khass = خاص = special, distinct
takleef = تكليف = orders given, mission
dunya = دنيا = world
Maut = موت = death
Dukaan = دكان = store
Jeeb = جيب = pocket
sahee = صحيح = correct/right
murabba = مربى = jam, fruit preserve

There are also words that are what language teachers call "false friends" :

gharib (غريب), for example, usually means poor and not "strange, foreign" though it can also mean the latter in certain contexts, e.g. عجيب و غريب.

This is not unlike in the Middle East where gharib also means "stranger, foreigner, wanderer, someone with unknown origin/domicile".

There is also a Hindi/Urdu to English dictionary which allows input in Arabic characters.

Thanks to Junaid Quadri and Prathibha Juturu for additional words (now included above).

If you know some more words in Hindi that are Arabic, please post them below in the comments ...

Pallav, There was no Hindi

Sat, 2015/09/19 - 22:30

Pallav,

There was no Hindi nor Urdu prior to the modern era. They were one language, and the primary distinction between them today is that Hindus have expunged a lot of Arabic/Persian origin words from their language and replaced them with Sanskrit ones, and Muslims (mostly in Pakistan) have done likewise with Sanskrit words replacing them with Arabic/Persian equivalents.

Turks did the same thing at the time of Ataturk, these are politically motivated actions and have little to do with the natural development of languages.

Khalid,

The situation of Hindi/Urdu is not so much one of organic borrowings. The language itself was artificially constructed in a sense, by a Mongol warrior class who dominated the Indian sub-Continent. Their language was almost a Creole that was formed for them all to mutually communicate when they'd hailed from vastly different parts of the Muslim world.

Abu Rashid, its not true what you think

Wed, 2015/11/18 - 11:57

Abu, you may not be well aware of Indian language before 20th century. Yes, It is true that Hindi is a standardized form of khadi boli a regional Hindi spoken around Delhi area but this was not the one variant being spoken in northen part. There are other equally rich vernacular lanugages like Avadhi, braj, bundeli, rajsthani etc they are also Hindi but some different style. Ramcharitmans was written in 15th century and like wise meerabai and surdas but we don't find any influnce of parsi on those texts.
For your information the text and poems written in these languages are free from parsi or arabic influence. Parsi was lanugage of muslim officially imposed by muslim invaders since from Delhi sultanate. There was not much favour to indian languages from muslim kingdoms but most of the hindu population continued to follow their regional language. In this way there was minimum effect of parsi or arbi on those languages. This happened till 16th century when a new creole URDU emerged from southern India. Anyways Urdu is not an authentic language it is just parsi and arbi words crammed into Hindi sentences.
Abu, unlike favoured belief that Urdu was developed by mongol rulers. It was developed in deccan (southern India) during nizams rule. Who were basically sunni from iraqi descent. They first crammed parsi and arabic words in Hindi sentences. Indian words were replaced by arabic and parsi equivalents and then this form of lanuage was generalized by the rulers and islamic rulers. This was in similar fashion as most ofthe other languages are facing today with english hegemony.
Those who had good knowledge of Parsi language was only entitled to get government job in islamic era. (We still have proverb in Hindi regarding parssi language)
as soon as a territory was subjugated by a muslim he would take no time in declaring parsi as official language and islam as state religion no matter how many muslim live in that territory. The classic example is Tipu Sultan.

After independence, we were free to choose our own language i.e. indian language so our leaders started to purge those unneccesary parsi and arbic words from vocabulary. They were successful but it was bollywood which is heavily dominated by muslims ( writers lyricist, singers, producers, actors etc) again brought parsi, arbi c in mainstream Hindi. Their songs, dialogues are generally filled with more technical arbic parsi words that ssometimes we bormal Hindus unable to understand.

Some proverbs containing

Sat, 2015/11/21 - 08:39

Some proverbs containing "Farsi". The use of this word indicates value of Farsi language on Indian society.

पढ़े फारसी बेचे तेल यह देखो किस्मत का खेल
English mean: Padhe farsi beche tel, yeh dekho quismat ka khel
Even After having studied farsi one is selling cooking oil, this is bad luck.

हाथ कंगन को आरसी क्या, पढ़े लिखे को फारसी क्या
Hath kangan ko arasi kya, padhe like ko farsi kya.
English mean: To wear bangle you don't need mirror, same way to be a learnt man you need not have a knoqledge of farsi language.

हिन्दी न फारसी लाला जी बनारसी
Hindi na farsi na, lala ji banarsi
Neither Hindi nor is farsi, lala is a banarsi man.
This says even a well dressed man is not a guarantee that he will be a learned man.

Borrowed

Tue, 2016/03/29 - 08:48

But in this case, the Arabic word is borrowed. Perhaps from China, or from India via China.

So it is not a native Arabic word that was borrowed by Hindi.

Swahili

Mon, 2017/05/01 - 21:09

While it's true that the name given to the peoples of East Africa's coast can be loosely recognized as Swahili, the Arabic root of this word produces swahel, or coast. When swahel is used with yaa nisba, it becomes swahili or peoples of the coast. The Swahili language is KiSwahili, the people WaSwahili, and on. To wit: Oman, Omani, Saud, Saudi, Kuwait, Kuwaiti wa katha na katha.

English, and separating languages

Fri, 2016/06/24 - 09:02

Thanks Pallav for the list. Unfortunately for me and other visitors to this site, I cannot read Hindi. So please redo the list adding two columns, one for transliteration/pronunciation in Latin characters, and another for the meaning in English.

Also, separate the list into Arabic, Farsi and Turkish, since they are very different languages belonging to very different language families (Semitic, Indo-European, Turkic).
