Warning to female tourists thinking of marrying Egyptians

  1. Home

By Khalid on 2008/11/22 - 20:17, last updated 2008/12/28 - 15:53

A word of caution for female tourists visiting Egypt: be careful of the many of the men working in tourist areas in Egypt.

Although the vast majority of Egyptians have a high sense of honor and good conduct, it seems that tourist areas seem to attract a relatively high concentration of people with lax morals, who would exploit tourists in many ways. It can manifest itself as persistent aggressive begging, peddling cheap goods, charging 10X the normal prices for services and goods, and what this article focuses on: exploiting female tourists.

Looking at the bulk of the comments on my notes on compulsory army service in egypt they are mostly from non-Egyptian women who married (or intend to marry) an Egyptian man, and army service has become an obstacle.

So, once you here the word "habibti" (meaning "my love" in Arabic), and before you call him "Habibi", let alone go down the marriage route, read on below for more information.

The exploitation happens in many forms, but is normally centered around one of the following:

Easy and Free Sex

Many tourists come from countries where sex is more freely practiced outside of marriage. Youn g Egyptian men working in tourist areas who
are not married see this as an opportunity, and are met with acceptance from the female tourists.

A source for Money

Many Egyptian men who practice this scam view the "wealthy" tourist as a source of income. They keep asking their "girl friend", "fiance" or "wife" for money for various excuses, just like a professional scammer would play a confidence game on a victim.

An Opporunity for Immigration

Some of those men want to get out of Egypt, and see their marriage as a way to gain residence and citizenship in a Western country. The economy in Egypt has been stagnant for decades, and poverty, lack of opportunity and the high cost of marriage lures some youth to trying these tricks.

Why it works?

There are several factors that work in favor of the Egyptian scammers here.

One factor that helps is that most Egyptian men look desirable to Western women, being of darker complexion than their compatriots. The fact that the foreigners are white blonds work in making the women attractive and desirable for Egyptian men.

Another factor is that the woman is coming to the tourist place to have a good time. It may be a break from stressful work or study, or perhaps a past relationship. This helps blind her to what is happening.

Yet another factor is the cultural differences which also create temporary blindness.

Moreover, those workers being away from their village or city of origin, where they would be observed by their extended family and friends tend to make it easier for them to engage in sexual relationships and scams without being scrutinized by acquaintenaces, and no stigma is attached to these behaviors.

Finally, the scammers have perfected their techniques over the years, and are very skillful at what they do.

Blacklists

Blacklists have emerged on the internet, to warn potential female tourists from known exploiters. These have all the faults of user contributed content on the internet in that they can be innacurate, biased, or even rigged by rivals or pranksters. However, in the absence of any other information, they can be useful, provided they are taken with a good deal of skepticism and research and common sense applied.

  • An overview article on what a "black list" is, at Arabia.pl.
  • Dezy House: Blacklist for Hurghada, in English.
  • Dezy House: Blacklist for Sharm El Sheikh, in English.
  • Wanted List of Egypt.
  • Egyptian Blacklist on Topix.
  • KunstKamera blacklist.

Happens everywhere, not only Egypt

Before someone gets the impression that Egypt is a cesspool, and Egyptians are crooks, let me say it is neither.

The problem above is not limited to Egypt by any means. Any country where tourists come in to spend money has its share of exploiters. The above black lists have a Turkish one, and a Tunisian one, and there are lots of stories about French, Italian and Spanish men exploiting women tourists as well.

Of course, there is also the Russian bride fraud targeting well to do men in the West.

So, the problem is universal, although this article focuses on female tourists to Egypt.

Final Thoughts

There are many non-Egyptian women married to Egyptian men happily, so over-generalizing from the cases mentioned, or from workers at tourist resort is wrong. Chances are you will be happy with an Egyptian as a husband if you met him in a more natural settings, e.g. while studying or working, and getting to meet his family as well.

The "artificial" environment in resorts, being on holiday, and surrounded by some scammers lend itself to the disasters described.

So, beware ...

Conman or Real

Mon, 2009/06/22 - 08:21

I have recently returned from my annual holiday in Hurghada with my partner and friends.

Whilst there I met an Egptian man in his late 20's. I am in my early 30's. He spent time with us as a group and later we spent time together alone. During this time he said he had got feelings for me and we became very close as I felt the same for him. He was aware that I was there with my partner.

He never asked for money in the time we spent together and he always paid.

When I came home I thought I would never hear from him again but we have been in contact daily either by text or phone call.

The only thing he has aked is for me to come back so we can get to know each other better.

Do you think he is a con man or legitimate?

Be careful of this man from Hurghada, he may be genuine, but if you do go back alone stay in a decent hotel, if he asks for any money forget him. see if he introduces you to his family, and treats you with respect. There is nothing wrong with being friends, but watch for the obvious things, like telling you he is in prison just before you go and needs money to get out, or he needs medical treatment. Just ignore those things. Or if he suggests getting a flat together while you are there which he will arrange, whatever the cost he might be getting half of that. Good luck, from Hanan.

If some handsome young man in Egypt looks at an English lady, I would suggest that she enjoy the attention, but never take it seriously no matter what age.

COMMON SENSE!

Tue, 2009/07/07 - 09:34

Oh Come on! If you are stupid enough to send money to a man in another country (especially an arab country) then more fool you. I have an Egypitan boyfriend who I met in Dubai where we both live, I love him dearly and I do trust him, but sends money to ther countries, if you cant be together in the same country in the first place then there is a problem, why western women fall for scams like this is insane to me, where is your self respect and common sense, youa re giving western women a bad name for being easy and stupid! Spend time learning about the culture and possibly religion of the person you are entering intoa relationship with if it is different from yours. The Middle East is a completely different world.

Dear Gemma, two of the women I met in Egypt who had been conned by their Egyptian boyfriends had known them for two years and more, in fact one had been with her man for five years, yet he still took thousand off her. So your comment about getting to know them first is not quite right, both met the families of these men and thought they knew them well, and one of the women speaks Arabic, she took lessons for two years.

Neither were stupid women, regards from Hannan.

English arrogance

Mon, 2009/10/05 - 23:37

Gemma"The Middle East is a completely different world." Yes its really different world, its that world that your british ancestors used to rob and steal and destroy.. SO why do you mind the egyptian guys to take their booties(money-sex..etc)of ur women? I'm very very proud of egyptian guys which working in resorts and touristy zones and keeping doing up that great stuff.. Its highly awesome thing, God bless them all. They have to do so and so, cuz its the right deal to revenge of these engaylish muppets the ones who used to rob and steal egypt for decades. Some facts , everyone should put in his /her mind, Most of english ugly women with big teeth who come to egypt, they are
frustrated ,rejected in their own society,So whats the wrong if an dead woman found egyptian boy and he was poor, also wanted the money???Solution: Pay money to gain ur happiness. its the way.... Actually mr.khaled is nuts to have such article like that... he obviously degrades his own ppl, and give credits to other to attack egyptians... Fake unpatriotic guy. hhahahahahaaha call egyptian guys as scammers ? while ENglish ppl are the most scammers in the world. Most of english governers live on bribes....Most of english men exploit their wives ,girlfriends worse and worst than egyptians do, so why blaming egyptians?? and ur own english ppl are worst..Shall i have to narrate a real story about what happening in ur english society? i know many and many, for example, AN english drunk guy used to expolit his wife as money machine, and enjoying spend his nights at clubs, losin money on poker games and cheating around sluts and so many stories like that.. I really sick of that damn article..Mr.khaled ....Ro7 gatak neeelah, disgraceful low person. Im deeply sure , if u was in the same position and same environmental status of these guys,if u suffered like these guys... u will do the same.. its instinctive thing.

Viva Egyptians!

Wrong ...

Tue, 2009/10/06 - 10:18

Egyptian.bloke:

Your post shows that you are as narrow minded and backwards just like the bad English that you criticize.

You first mistake is justifying the immoral and illegal acts that some Egyptian men do by making it a tit for tat for historical grievances in another century by another generation. Your comment degrades more by calling most English women ugly and making that a reason for the Egyptian exploiters to make money off them. You then call English people scammers.

Do not generalize. If you do, then you have to accept the same generalization against your own people.

Instead of defending those Egyptians that do wrong, do the right thing and blame those who do it (whether it is the tourist women, or the Egyptian men), rather than defending immoral and illegal acts, no matter who does them.

Your personal insults to me do not even deserve a response.

Fri, 2009/10/09 - 14:00

Dr Egyptian man, you think the English are all scammers? I don't think so, I know that the English give more to charity than any other nation, they are at their best when things are bad, they help their neighbours when they need it, and they have a great sense of humour. If you are muslim isn't charity one of the five pillars of faith? I am Irish so not sticking up for myself, but stating what I know, from Pat.
