  3. Another form of Internet Fraud: Usenet Forsale Scam

By Khalid on 2006/08/08 - 10:12, last updated 2006/08/08 - 10:12

Here is a classic scam from Craigslist. They offer to buy your item you advertised via classified for more money than you ask for ($375 in my case, he offered $500).They even give you a bleeding heart story about wife dying in accident.

From: ike derico Alright,i live in North Georgia United State.Am quite comfortable with the condition of the item since i wont be making any repairs on it,i will like to offer you $500 including packing materials without you paying for any shipping charges b'cos i already have an account with FedEx,i would have loved to make the payment in cash and carry but we are not in the same state so i will like to go ahead with the payment by sending you a Money Order But i will need your contact infomation in which the money will be deliver ok.I wonna buy this [item name] for my step son to fulfill the promise his mum made before she died,i lost my lovely wife to an auto accident on 29th of June 2005 and since then i and her step son john have been living seperately and i want to buy this item for him because his mom promised him before death took her away from us and i think with this i and tobi can live as a family. Kindly get back to me immediately you receive my e-mail and i will like you to take it off craigslist for auction cos am serious in buying it.So let me have your full infomation ofr pyment to be made.... Best Regards. .I.Derico

Note how they can't pick up proper English names? I got another from 'ortega hanson'.

Tue, 2009/07/07 - 09:47

I got this from robinizmiller@gmail.com

Thanks for the prompt response. I have instructed my
account officer to mail a certified
check (overnight), while you hold this item for me. Let me know
when you receive the check and I will have my mover
will come pick up at your place. Please forward me
the following info so I can issue your check . . .
1.Your full name
2.Your mailing address(Physical as Ups does not deliver to P.O.Box}
3.Your phone number.
** Please note that I will overnight the payment, and
you should receive it tomorrow. I appreciate you
holding this for me. Please delete the posting as I
am definitely buying it from you and it would be sad
for me to have the payment in the mail only to be
informed of the its sale, also am deaf and will like to be contacted via email**

This was a 5 piece waterbed bedroom set, Maybe I should have completed the deal, the movers would have cost more than the set is worth.

Ebay Scammers

Wed, 2009/07/08 - 16:49

Here are more names of scammers:

Abraham Niralos
Donovan Cunningham

"Donovan" actually asked me the following: Thanks, I'm interested, What are you doing for living and please do provide me your number to call you. Please do reply me back only if you accept check as mode of payment and i will wait the check delivered to you before any pick-up has been made. Respond with YOUR NAME AND ADDRESS to mail the check to you today and get it by friday monring so that my shipper couldcome on saturday for pick-up.

"Abraham" offered to pay $50 more than the asking price and said his shippers will come to get the item once I have cashed his check.

My response to both was, "Sorry, I take cash only." That took care of the inquires.

WATCH OUT for name Terry

Wed, 2009/07/08 - 17:30

WATCH OUT for name Terry Lonn. Email address tylonn1978@gmail.com. He could not contact us via phone due to severe stammer. His secretary supposedly made the check out for too much money. $2000.00 over the amount of the item. He wanted us to cash the cashier check and wire the additional money to him.

Hello, Thanks for

Wed, 2009/07/08 - 23:13

Hello,
Thanks for your quick response, i will be buying it, i will like to tell you that i will be paying with a cashier's check in us dollars and as for the shipment my shipper will come for the pick up at your doorstep upon your confirmation of receiving the payment. I dont want you to look for any other buyer please, i would have love to come down and see it for my self am not chanced to do that now but am satisfied with your description of the item and i believe i can trust you with that.I will like you to give me the following so that your payment can be sent out immediately:your full name to be on the check, your full contact address to send the payment to.your zip code, your mobile and land number to reach you.
i will be expecting that asap.So once you get back to me with your details, the payment will now be prepared and sent to you in your name and address so that you can be able to have your own money and just to let you know that it is my client that will issue the check to you with the amount of shipper funds, so once you have the check and then cash it you will have to send the remaining excess funds back to the shipper in the US through western union money transfer and after sending it, we will arrange the pick-up time and you will get back to me with the details of the payment. I also want you to deduct $50 as your compensation for running around to send the shipper's fund. Finally you must get back to me as soon as you receive the check so that i can forward the shipper's information to you. Thanks for the understanding. Stay blessed

I received 2 responses almost exactly like this. I don't remember the email addresses but one was from a Rev Brent. Really weird I took my car off craigslist because I didn't want people like this contacting me. It really stinks that scammers have to ruin a good thing.

WTF

Fri, 2009/07/10 - 20:28

I feel like such an idiot! I actually took this as far as getting the check via UPS, for OVER $2,000 more what I asked! All these other posts are pretty much identical to what this guy said, secretary messed up, and to wire the rest of the $ and to keep an extra $100 for my having to "run around". This seems really screwed up. I am really curious what is really going on. What would happen if I just went through with it???

Here's what the perp used:

Rec'd this email from john

Sat, 2009/07/11 - 21:48

Rec'd this email from john sean . I was selling a NIB 4 drawer chest for $100.

Hi,
I have instructed my assistant to send out your payment as soon you
provide your full name, phone number and address. I can only pay via
money order as am on business trip now,the money order is going to
clear from your bank before the pick up. Please let me know where to
send your payment to because i would'nt want to lose it to someone
else. I dont mind adding fifty dollars so you can keep it in my favor.
As for the pick-up, I already have an arrangement for that.Hope is in
good condition?
John

My reply to Mr. John Sean...

Hello -

Sorry, I only deal locally. If you are not not able to pay cash at the time of pickup - I am not interested in selling the item. I don't work with SCAMMERS.

Thanks for wasting my time.

I got one from John Sean too!

Tue, 2009/11/10 - 14:00

Thank you so much for taking the time to post this scam from John Sean. I just got the same exact one today, Nov. 10, 2009...I was suspicious because of the grammar and the take charge attitude on how the whole transaction was to be played out...so I googled some phrases and this site popped up with your post..thanks again..saved me a lot of trouble that I don't even want to imagine..already a victim from a Nigerian scam about 8 years ago but caught it right before a catastrophe..but the endless emails, long distant phone calls and the expense of buying a fax machine that I never used again...well, it could have been worse! I got suspicious at the end and researched it and sure enough..SCAM~! Darn, and I really thought I would receive $100,000,000.00~! Boy, did I feel stupid!
Thanks again~!
