Classified ads on craigslist attract scammers from Nigeria and elsewhere. Here is a recent example when I was trying to sell something. Not that I asked for $375, and was offered more for it.Here is the first message I got:
pls can you tell me if this item is still for sale ?and the price
When I replied it was available, this was the reply:
I will have to inform you that i am okay with the price of the [item name] ($375)condition terms are also okay with me,For the Shippment from your location,i have my SHIPPER as soon as we seal this Transaction from your end. I have a CLIENT of my that is owning me some Fund in United Kingdom that will issue you the cheque of ($2000) soon as you receive the cheque and when cleared you will deduct the cost of the [item name] and the remaining balance will be send to the Shipper through western union money transfer for the pick up from your location. This is a classic scam that involves you wiring them money via Western Union, and they sending you a fake cashier cheque.

job scams & innovations
Mon, 2011/01/31 - 03:28Hey folks,
Some creeps tried to scam me via a job opportunity on Craigslist. The scary part was, that the person they claimed to be, a Mr. John A. Hall, from University College of London does exist, so when you think you are being diligent and following up on your contacts w/ potential employers, etc., it is tricky. What these Nigerian terrorists ( and they are terrorists, BTW. They despise Americans in particular, but they are equal opportunity thieves in general, however they are an organized faction that prey upon the vulnerability and security of everyday citizens, especially the elderly, disabled & desperate). Anyway, what these pigs do is "cut & paste" old postings, so as to mask their poor command of English. I'm also told by an FBI fraud agent that these guys are prone to recruit willing Americans to assist them w/ the proper diction, spelling, etc. in their posts, when they believe they've "hooked a Phish". In my case, a woman from Redondo Beach, Ca., named Susan Savino was sending out the fake checks for these guys. Things to look for: NEVER SEND THIRD PARTY MONIES!...ever.
Watch out for ignorant grammar & poor spelling.
Watch out for the repitation of the phrase "God Bless You";they have no "God".
Watch out for a sudden urgency for you to complete Their transaction.
Never allow Your bank account to be involved in anything other than your own personal banking matters....EVER.
Pay attention to the continued posts; you will notice the grammar & tone of the replies decrease in intelligence & any manner of exchange beyond the request of MONEY!!!!
Always check the UPI/ISP, etc. from any posting. If it doesn't match up...Guess what! It's not real, call the Feds & play along. It's hard to get these DEVILS, but it's fun to try.
And remember...as Judge Judy says; "IF IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE, IT'S NOT TRUE"!
BTW; these rejects did not take me for a dime, instead I cost them $$$; Sadly, it was probably coin ripped from the hand of an elderly woman.

additional scams by similar circumstances
Mon, 2011/02/07 - 18:42I answered an ad from craigs list concerning repair of seven Dell laptops. the scam is they would send me a check for the amount that I asked for the repair of these laptops. the cashiers check which was sent to me via USPS was twice what I asked for and the other half was to be forwarded to a shipper of the laptops in bronx ny. I found out the check was a fraud and the person who whose address was on the check shipping package was a foreclosed property. I caLLED THE BANK ON WHICH THE CASHIERS CHECK WAS DRAWN AND THEY VERIFIED IT WAS TOTALLY BOGUS. THE EMAIL CAME FROM A ANTHPERTERCOM231@GMAIL.COM

CRAIGSLIST SCAMS
Mon, 2011/02/07 - 19:02I WAS ALMOST DUPED INTO THIS SCENARIO: I answered a computer repair request on craigslist and the customer said that they wanted my shipping address and cellphone no. for contact purposes which seemed ok at the time. they said they would ship out the payment as a cashiers check which was twice the amount I asked for repairing 7 laptops. the balance was to be sent or forwarded to the person shipping the laptops to be repaired. upon receiving the cashiers check it looked too flimsy like it was a decent color laser copy of the original. I called the bank and they verified it was a bogus check. the shipping address from which the cashiers check came from was a foreclosed property in fla.the person who was to receive the funds for the shipment of the laptops was in Bronx Ny.
hope this helps someone else not to get duped as well.

Scammer Names.
Mon, 2011/02/07 - 22:11I recently put an ad for a high price item on CL. Of course I was contacted by numerous scam artist's. Just thought I would post their e-mails and names.
Email(s): demolaola1@gmail.com/ dyvettedarren1@gmail.com/ everythingispossible61@yahoo.com/ lindawilliams10@rocketmail.com/ wesleyscott111@gmail.com/ lewismore789@gmail.com/
Each e-mail was so similar to all the others I have seen on this thread. Offered to pay more then asking price, poor English/sentence structure, all had private shippers/clients (they wanted me to pay, of course), wanted to overnight a check, etc. Just wanted to post their e-mails to potentially help someone else from getting scammed.
Some of their e-mails.

I received an offer from
Wed, 2011/02/16 - 23:13I received an offer from craigslist for a rolltop desk. The exact same thing happened; I was sent a check for $2000 when the purchase price was only $250. I told the so called buyer that I could not do it and if they wanted to pay cash and pick it up that would be fine. I knew it was weird; I mean what kind of person trusts a stranger to deposit a check and sent back excess money. I was offered an additional $100 for fixing the "mistake." Luckily, I thought about this before trying to deposit the check. The scammer never returned an email after I told him that this was not going to work. Previously, he had replied very quickly.
I have the check, emails, and fedex envelope it came in. I want to try to turn this information in to see if it will help in finding these people who are trying to scam others. I could go to the police, but I am unsure of how to handle this situation. Does anyone have any info on how to help get these scammers caught?

scambags...
Wed, 2011/03/02 - 02:09Good for you! A scumbag tried to get me for a job as a personal chef....they actually lost $$ on me, but isn't it sick that people will spend sooo much time and $$$ trying to screw someone they don't even know out of any scraps they can grab for instead of just getting a real job?!!! Of course, it obviously works, quite a bit, too...I bet their children are really proud!!!
