  3. Another form of Internet Fraud: Usenet Forsale Scam

By Khalid on 2006/08/08 - 10:12, last updated 2006/08/08 - 10:12

Here is a classic scam from Craigslist. They offer to buy your item you advertised via classified for more money than you ask for ($375 in my case, he offered $500).They even give you a bleeding heart story about wife dying in accident.

From: ike derico Alright,i live in North Georgia United State.Am quite comfortable with the condition of the item since i wont be making any repairs on it,i will like to offer you $500 including packing materials without you paying for any shipping charges b'cos i already have an account with FedEx,i would have loved to make the payment in cash and carry but we are not in the same state so i will like to go ahead with the payment by sending you a Money Order But i will need your contact infomation in which the money will be deliver ok.I wonna buy this [item name] for my step son to fulfill the promise his mum made before she died,i lost my lovely wife to an auto accident on 29th of June 2005 and since then i and her step son john have been living seperately and i want to buy this item for him because his mom promised him before death took her away from us and i think with this i and tobi can live as a family. Kindly get back to me immediately you receive my e-mail and i will like you to take it off craigslist for auction cos am serious in buying it.So let me have your full infomation ofr pyment to be made.... Best Regards. .I.Derico

Note how they can't pick up proper English names? I got another from 'ortega hanson'.

Does anyone know how this scam works?

Mon, 2010/03/08 - 18:12

I received the following responses to some cheap items I have for sell on CL. It has to be a new scam of some sort, they each want me to click on a link to watch a video and let them know if my items are the same as the ones in the video. Has anyone seen this scam or knows how it works? I put each senders email address at the end of their emails.
Thanks

Hello,

saw the Ad you posted on c-list titled - "Kenwood Dual Cassette Deck - $10" and I'm quite interested in getting this however I am not too sure if it's the same type that my cousin is after. Obviously I want to make certain before I commit myself to buying it. Anyways here is a video shot that I been able to copy from my boy's Macbook VID1 or try VID2. Can you please ensure its the similar type and reply back to me Shortly. Im prepared to pay a little more than what your asking for as long the it matches the video description and you can reserve it for me.

Kind
Regards
Jessica.

this lady from Nigeria sent my husband this email

lola Smith (lolasmth0@gmail.com)
Thanks for the prompt response.. I am ready to buy it now for my
Daughter and i am offering $640 because right now am at sea at the
moment as i am a business woman and due to the nature of my work,
visiting of website are restricted but i squeezed out time to check
this advert and send you an email regarding it. I really want it to be
a surprise for my Daughter so i wont let her know anything about it
until it gets delivered to her, i am sure she will be more than happy
with it. I insisted on PayPal because i don't have access to my bank
account online as i don't have internet banking, but i can pay from my
PayPal, as i have my bank a/c attached to it....i will love you to go
to www.PayPal.com and set up an account because it't very easy to send
and received money online kindly set up an account and get back to me
with your PayPal email account for the payment.

Thanks

we didnt find out it was a scam till we already sent the item out...so we are SCREWED! ANY ADVICE ON WHAT TO DO NOW?

Have a truck listed for sale

Sat, 2010/03/20 - 12:28

Have a truck listed for sale via CL. Have received several offers to pay more than listing price, and asking me to get an insurance quote for them via link provided. Link takes you to a "download video" which I never opened -suspect it is a virus plant.

Received another offer to pay more, but via paypal. Asks me to send request for payment via paypal which I did not do - can't figure out the deal here but am confident it is a scam of some sort.

Someone tried this one on me.

Sat, 2010/03/20 - 18:31

My spidey sense kicked in when I got this reply:

I'm glad you still have it for sale,i would have love to come and see it,but my scheduled is very tight.I will mail out your payment once you provide your full name.phone number and address.I can only pay via money order as am on a business trip now,pls let me know where to send your payment to because i wouldn't want to lose it to some else.I don't mind adding ($20) dollars so you can keep it in my favor, you should get your payment in 7-9 working days i will appreciate if you can get the ad off craigslist so i can be sure you are keeping it in my favor. Please let me know as soon as you receive it so i can start making arrangement for the pick-up.

This is from a Santos Gibson and the email is gibsongive@yahoo.com. Hope this will help someone else too.

Scams

Sun, 2010/03/21 - 11:42

I posted several items on craigslist and immediately I got responses for all of them from different folks at yahoo accounts. Each e-mail sounded basically the same. I've decided not to respond to them...they seem very fishy. I have one other guy from a gmail account that says he's on a boat & unable to see the item but wants. He said he wanted to pay through PayPal & wanted my address information. I would not supply the address...said pick up arrangements from "his agent" would be given upon receipt and clearance of payment. I did send him a PayPal invoice but now am quite worried...wondering if I should withdraw the invoice and pull the item from craigslist for now. Craigslist use to be a source to deal with people that had the best intentions of purchasing the item, but now it's turning into a scamming racket...why can't they monitor or protect the site better? I never had a bad experience from craigslist in the past...in fact bought several things from it myself, but how disappointing that we're now having to deal with scam artists. Reading everyones experiences on here has made me very concerned about posting anything else on the site.

Barry James & Marry Joe

Mon, 2010/03/22 - 02:37

Oh guys, please be careful of these two. Marry Joe offers way more than you're asking price. The emails always ends with God bless. Don't be fooled!! Then there is Barry James using email address giggijames70@gmail.com whom will tell you easily he will report you to the FBI. Hahaha sour grapes after the transaction was cancelled. This guy is very sly using the name of The Bank Of America and then wants you to refund money back (this will be payment you never received) via Western Union. His spelling is very bad and in this case pretended to be a doctor buying an item for his fiancè whom is having a holiday at a resort. Shipment address that was given: 12 Ramoni Oke Street, Itire, Surulere, Lagos, Nigeria.

$250.00+ $30.00= 280.00 my telephone number is 845 891-8856 my address is
(gave my hope address name and telephone number that i wont post here)

EMAIL 3
Dennis Loyal (dennnesloyall@gmail.com)
Good day and how is your day ? I just received the confirmation from
the secretary now that the payment as been issued out and was mailed
by the United Parcel Service. It will be delivered to your address a
day from now according to the courier ,but to my greatest surprise is
that, she made a mistake by sending you money order for amount of $975
in 2 pics and the total is $1,950,instead of the actual cost of my
purchase .And your name has been write on it and it will delivered to
you soon

This is a terrible mistake and i was just informed about this so
please once the Money Order is delivered please take it to your Bank
and have it cashed as advised by the accounting officer at the
Bank. You will then deduct the cost of my purchase .The rest of the
fund should be sent to my mover via Western union the same day you do
receive the payment so that my mover can make the trip over for the
pick at once. **I will need your immediate response via email assuring
me that i can trust you to handle this with care and have the
remaining fund returned appropriately.I am hearing impaired and will
hope that your intentions remains noble through out the duration of
this transaction**

these are the emails so far looks simular to the post ive seen here i have a few questions. What happens if i get the check and cash it at a locak Check cashing store. i sent other responces this person like meet face to face and i have a degree in sigh language or we can write down what we want to say to eachother face to face. waiting on responce to this email seems like a scam thanks for this site. if u notice on the posters email it changes on the last one. funny buisness!!!
