  3. Another form of Internet Fraud: Usenet Forsale Scam

By Khalid on 2006/08/08 - 10:12, last updated 2006/08/08 - 10:12

Here is a classic scam from Craigslist. They offer to buy your item you advertised via classified for more money than you ask for ($375 in my case, he offered $500).They even give you a bleeding heart story about wife dying in accident.

From: ike derico Alright,i live in North Georgia United State.Am quite comfortable with the condition of the item since i wont be making any repairs on it,i will like to offer you $500 including packing materials without you paying for any shipping charges b'cos i already have an account with FedEx,i would have loved to make the payment in cash and carry but we are not in the same state so i will like to go ahead with the payment by sending you a Money Order But i will need your contact infomation in which the money will be deliver ok.I wonna buy this [item name] for my step son to fulfill the promise his mum made before she died,i lost my lovely wife to an auto accident on 29th of June 2005 and since then i and her step son john have been living seperately and i want to buy this item for him because his mom promised him before death took her away from us and i think with this i and tobi can live as a family. Kindly get back to me immediately you receive my e-mail and i will like you to take it off craigslist for auction cos am serious in buying it.So let me have your full infomation ofr pyment to be made.... Best Regards. .I.Derico

Note how they can't pick up proper English names? I got another from 'ortega hanson'.

check from my account to cover the cost, while you hold on my behalf.
Once you have this, my mover will come for the pick up at your place.
I will be needing the following information to issue out the payment . . .

1.Name to be on the check
2.Home address
3.Telephone
4.zip code
Please note that the payment will be overnight by my Office to
your address and its bound to be delivered within 2 days. I have taken
a close look at the advert and am completely satisfied, i really need
this and would appreciates that you help save this till the payment
arrives. Furthermore do remove the posting as am definitely buying it
from you and it would be sad for me to have the payment in the mail
only to be alerted it as been sold when the check does arrives. Am A

Craiglist scam Lisa Coulbary and Steve Carl

Thu, 2010/04/15 - 10:18

I thought it was a bit odd that i would receive a request for 2 seperate items that I posted. The items were not even posted near each other in the posting list. Perhaps the scammers smelled new blood.

Fortunately, I did not respond.

SETH PETERS SCAM

Fri, 2010/04/16 - 00:55

I won't go into detail because this is virtually the same scam, I'm just wondering what would happen if I tried to cash the 3 money orders I received instead of depositing them. Am I putting myself at risk and how?

I would be the money orders

Fri, 2010/04/23 - 19:31

I would be the money orders are fake -- we called moneygram and the numbers on the ones we got were used earlier this year -- so you could be at risk.......

this was very similar to one

Fri, 2010/04/23 - 19:30

this was very similar to one I got -- what I don't understand is what are they hoping that people will cash the 'fake' money orders and send them money or? We called the police and they wanted nothing to do with this.......so people can just go around sending off fake money orders and no one cares -- what if someone does cash them? Aren't they considered fraudulent?

Same e-mail - word-for-word!

Thu, 2010/04/29 - 11:06

I received exactly this same e-mail today. What I can't figure out is what the scam is. I mean, the item I'm selling is big so there is no way I'm going to ship it. He's only "including" $30 extra that is apparently mine to keep. If I fell for this what would he be getting?

I decided to e-mail back (pretending I'm not aware of the scam) and tell him, again, that I will only accept cash. I didn't give him any of the info he was asking for, either. I wonder what comes next...
