  3. Another form of Internet Fraud: Usenet Forsale Scam

By Khalid on 2006/08/08 - 10:12, last updated 2006/08/08 - 10:12

Here is a classic scam from Craigslist. They offer to buy your item you advertised via classified for more money than you ask for ($375 in my case, he offered $500).They even give you a bleeding heart story about wife dying in accident.

From: ike derico Alright,i live in North Georgia United State.Am quite comfortable with the condition of the item since i wont be making any repairs on it,i will like to offer you $500 including packing materials without you paying for any shipping charges b'cos i already have an account with FedEx,i would have loved to make the payment in cash and carry but we are not in the same state so i will like to go ahead with the payment by sending you a Money Order But i will need your contact infomation in which the money will be deliver ok.I wonna buy this [item name] for my step son to fulfill the promise his mum made before she died,i lost my lovely wife to an auto accident on 29th of June 2005 and since then i and her step son john have been living seperately and i want to buy this item for him because his mom promised him before death took her away from us and i think with this i and tobi can live as a family. Kindly get back to me immediately you receive my e-mail and i will like you to take it off craigslist for auction cos am serious in buying it.So let me have your full infomation ofr pyment to be made.... Best Regards. .I.Derico

Note how they can't pick up proper English names? I got another from 'ortega hanson'.

CL Scammers

Have some fun with them...(and cost them some money!)
Simple : Repley with name/address/phone of local police chief.
I have 2 now that have sent bogus checks to the cop-shop ..complete with tracking #'s for their shipment. Then I tell them "no problem" I have allready made a withdrawl and will give them the differance in cash when they come to my office. (the police station) PLAY DUMB (believe me ...they are dumber!) Told one of them "I trust you, just send me your address and I will mail the cash to you...it will save me a trip to the bank". Cost me a couple bucks at this point ...but I sent the idiot a brick COD $5.00 on my end ...COD charges w/ insurance was $50.00 for them. Got a real nastie email from them so I told them to give me a call at the phone # I gave them. (police station) It's kind of fun ...just remember be "sincer" and act dumb. I'm out $5.00 but they are out about $75.00 at this point. Who is dumber?

Hit me last week - responding to a table I am selling. Offered more than I asked to hold it - and then oops, his wife wrote the money order for more than she was supposed to, blah, blah blah... I didn't receive anything in the mail - so sent back an email telling them I was turning them in to police and to Craigslist...is that all we can do to turn these people in??

I had the same story with this guy. Here is his email to me:

Hi,
Am glad it's available. I'm going on a vacation to London but I will instruct my assistant to prepare and mail your payment which I'm sure you will get in about 4 - 6 business days. I'll add $20 extra for the delay. I'll pay by M O or cashier check so send me your info (i.e full name, mailing address and your phone number) so payment can be mailed out immediately. I will also make arrangement for pick-up which will be after you must have received and cashed the payment. Awaiting your info.
Thanks

When I said that I wanted cash only, obviously no one responded to me.

scam

Sun, 2012/02/05 - 23:00

My 2000 Jeep Wrangler is in perfect condition and runs great, has only 72,846 miles, it has automatic transmission and a 6 Cylinder engine. There's no damage, no scratches, this truck was never involved in an accident.
The title is clean with no lien against it. I stand behind my word, the vehicle looks exactly as presented in the presale sheet you've already received.
My truck needs nothing to run, it's in excellent condition and has been extremely well maintained with a full service history. Bought it when i was serving in U.S. Army base in Illinois.
I have dropped my price to $3,700 (purchase price) since this is an Urgent Sale! and I need to sell it before February 15 when I will be deployed in Afghanistan for a training program.
If you're interested to conclude this purchase in a timely manner email me your Complete Name and Shipping Address. I'll send it to Google Checkout to start the process and they will explain the entire procedure.
The financial part will be managed by Google Checkout, which means that you will have a 10 days inspection period before committing to buy the truck and the title is transferred. That way we're both covered throughout this process.

Hope to hear from you soon,
Sergeant Nurse

I got the same response, but this time the car being sold is 2003 lexus. I have decided to do a google search before I responded to the email and I found this post.

My question to the original poster is what happened to your transaction? Did Sgt Baker take your money and never delivered the truck? I am just curious....

Thanks for your time.
