Craigslist Scam: Cheque and Western Union For More Than Amount

  1. Home
  2. Internet Scams and Fraud
  3. Another form of Internet Fraud: Usenet Forsale Scam

By Khalid on 2006/08/08 - 10:02, last updated 2006/08/08 - 10:02

Classified ads on craigslist attract scammers from Nigeria and elsewhere. Here is a recent example when I was trying to sell something. Not that I asked for $375, and was offered more for it.Here is the first message I got:

pls can you tell me if this item is still for sale ?and the price

When I replied it was available, this was the reply:

I will have to inform you that i am okay with the price of the [item name] ($375)condition terms are also okay with me,For the Shippment from your location,i have my SHIPPER as soon as we seal this Transaction from your end. I have a CLIENT of my that is owning me some Fund in United Kingdom that will issue you the cheque of ($2000) soon as you receive the cheque and when cleared you will deduct the cost of the [item name] and the remaining balance will be send to the Shipper through western union money transfer for the pick up from your location. If this is okay by you, do e-mail me the following detail FULL NAME ON CHEQUE:CONTACTED ADDRESS:MOBILE&LANDLINE PHONE NUMBER:AND ZIP CODEI will compensate you $50 to remove the advert from the site and will wait until the cheque clear before the pick up commence.hope to read from you today.

This is a classic scam that involves you wiring them money via Western Union, and they sending you a fake cashier cheque.

scammer

Tue, 2008/04/08 - 07:43

I'm having this happen to me as we speak (a scam). Right now I'm waiting for a "bank draft" from UPS, for which I have a tracking number, and oddly enough it was made "accidentally" for $2000 more than the original asking price. It says its coming from Newark, NJ. But I know the whole thing is a scam. I just wanted to ask you....should I take this whole thing to my local police? Do you think they would actually do something about it? I have the whole conversation saved in my email too, like you did. I'm not cashing the check or anything because I'm onto them now. I just don't want to look like an idiot if I go into the police department with this if it's just a waste of my time. Any advice?

Thanks!

Help

Tue, 2008/04/08 - 22:35

I wish I knew, I've got some clown doing the same thing to me right now and is so dumb that I even said that my husband is a COP (he's not but I thought that maybe numb nuts here would get the hint) and he is still emailing me. The last one (he finally got it) read:

what do you mean? embarazzing me like that,in your life dont ever talk
like this to me a gain, am an pilot..ok not a scammer idiot

(thats just as he sent it). sure. My response:

First of all MORON you should pick up some grammar lessons as well as spelling. If you are a pilot you must be in the same class as George W. Bush.

Like I said, my husband is a COP. You really think that no one knows about this scam? Who in their right mind would buy a car that THEY'VE NEVER SEEN and then have someone else pick it up for them?

Give me a break, go back to Nigeria.

Let me what your local cops tell you to do, I don't want them to waste valuable time on idiots like this.

Scam artist offering to pay with "e check"

Fri, 2007/10/12 - 00:02

I have ads posted on Craigs List for wedding dresses. This is the email I get from a "potential buyer" I have received 3 of the same email from different people. They are basically wanting to buy my product without viewing it first...no way!

Hello,

I’m interested in your item placed on advert, kindly let me know if its still available for sales and its present condition, thanks and i will be expecting your reply asap

This is the email (below) I get back from them when I tell them I only accept cash!

Thank you very much for your reply to my request, but i am very sorry that i will not be able to come over there to look at the item or offer you cash in person, but i will make your payment out of my Bank Account via e-check. But i will wait till you have the check clear in your bank before discussing about shipping, so let me know if we can proceed on the transaction, Thanks.

Potential Scam?

Wed, 2008/03/05 - 10:39

I know I am just being terribly stupid about all of this, but some guy said that he is visiting nigeria and that he can't use his credit cards, but he has a person who owes him money and is going to deposit the money in my account then I can make a cash withdrawl and send it via money gramm. I am at the point where it says the money is in the account and I have yet to send it.

How about you have the shipper pay me in cash when he makes the pickup?
One-on-one direct transaction.
This works best for me.

I only need the $500 check. I would prefer if you pay your shipping
company directly. $1,500 seems a bit excessive, I must say. We
shipped a car from California to Florida for $700.

In all honesty, I've never conducted a sale like this so I am
a bit apprehensive.

Thanks,
Brenda

Sound Good,

Am going to mail a check of $2000.to your address. You will deduct $500, and send the excess fund of $1500 to the Private shipping company for them to come for pick up, they still have some items to pick up in state with yours. Since you are satisfied with my mode of payment you can proceed to delete the advert. So email me the name and address that is going to be on the check with your phone
number...

I would also have to charge you actual shipping cost,
which I imagine would be quite high since the rails are
very heavy metal and it would be going a long distance.

I did have pix with the listing, but if you need more I can
take more, or re-send them if you didn't see them on
the listing.

Are you also willing to pre-pay the shipping?

Let me know. thanks for looking,
Brenda

Sounds good, i would like to purchase the Furniture as soon as possible. (I am intrested and ready to buy it now) The easiest way for me to pay is probably Cashier Check from my Bank. As there are lot of scams, So i have no problem with you waiting for the Cashier Check to go through at your bank or anything to clear, then you will have to proceed to your bank and cash the check when you receive it. I will wait for your bank to verify and clear the Cashier Check before we proceed with shipment. As my Bank Operator informed me that it will clear immidiately at your bank as it was from my account, which is Confirmed to All American Banking Association rules and standards. Attach a pics of it for me to see how beautifull it is and email me your full name and address with your phone number for me to send you the check. Thanks.

Please Email me back and let me know if this helps

Brenda Adams nonsense

Wed, 2012/09/19 - 19:49

Hey, thank you for this. I got a ridiculous request from this idiot too. I'm debating if I should just ignore this person (which I will now refer to as "it") from now on or tell it where to send the "check" and its "movers" and give it the address of my local police department. I mean seriously - this moron could've at least used the correct tense and punctuation, personalized it by specifically stating the item in question, and changed the margins so it wasn't totally obvious that it was cut and paste from another email scam that was already sent. This is the email chain:

Hello,
thanks for your reply. Am sorry there is a slight change in plan, i
will not be able to come
over for checkup due to my grandmother just concluded surgery on
pancreatic cancer. i
will be going to stay with her for at least a month, this just come
up unexpectedly, i was
suppose to be in your town on a 5days official trip and that has to
be changed. but i really
love to buy this item base on the condition of the item you describe.
so you will get payment
in about a week. i will be paying with bank certified cashier check
including movers fund. so
i will need a name and address to write out the check and need not to
worry about pickup
cause i will arrange for that. sorry for the delay in reply. Write back

Thank you
Brenda
