Craigslist classified for used car: Cheque fraud scam

  1. Home
  2. Internet Scams and Fraud
  3. Another form of Internet Fraud: Usenet Forsale Scam

By Khalid on 2006/09/09 - 18:28, last updated 2006/09/09 - 18:28

I recently listed a car for sale on craigslist and other local classified ad services. This is one reply I got, which is clearly an attempt at scamming:

From: Dave Smith <goldenwum12@yahoo.com>Subject: [The title of the classified ad for the car]Hello,I just viewed your car posting on craigslist and i have interest on it i will like to know the present condition and two more pictures of the car before i proceed with the transaction. Thanks

Problem is, the scammer is not very smart. I did not posted pictures to begin with, so there are no more pictures. So, I sent this reply:

From: meTo: Dave Smith <goldenwum12@yahoo.com>Pictures attached.

I intentionally did not attach any pictures. A genuine buyer would have noticed this of course. Instead, the scammer proceeded with the next step, revealing his true intent:

From Dave Smith <goldenwum12@yahoo.com>To: meHello,Thanks for your reply i got all your information about the car and am ok with it, i will be making your payment today i need your full name and address to make your payment today through electronic check i will handle the shipment myself. All what you need about the mode of payment is to get a Blank check paper and magnetic versa ink to print the check, the check will be sent to your email and you get it printed from it. You can get this materials from the following stores.1. Office Depot2. Office Max3. Staples Store 4. Stationery Store5. Compusa. When you get this materials you can print the check out and immediately after the printing you can then get the check cashed at your Bank or any bank of america branch around you I will wait for you to confirm and clear the check. The payment will be in excess as i will want you to contact my shipper with the excess fund for shipping the car after you must have confirmed and cashed the check.i will wait for your bank to clear the check so you can deduct your own money and send the excess fund to the shipper via Western Union Money Transfer so as to cover the cost of shipping the car from your place to it's destination. I will add extra 100$ for the purchasing of check paper and magnetic versa ink.For more information about the mode of payment you can check the website www.qchex.com and know more about it .Dont worry i will handle the shipping myself with my shipper. you can IM on this ID goldenwum10@yahoo.com or call me on 9145954296 for more information. Thanks and God Bless

This is a classic scam where a fake cheque is sent to the victim for more than the amount owed, and the difference is to be wired to the scammer.

Ok $2400 Sounds Good.
I want to purchase the item today and pay you via Electronic Bank Check drawn from my Bank account . The check will be sent to you immediately via email, all you need to do is to purchase a business check paper at any Office depot or stationary store to print the check on and immediately when you print the check proceed to your Bank to deposit or Cash it,the business check paper cost $20 only but i will offer you $50 to purchase the business check paper to print the check. The item will be picked up from you by my Company shipper so you don't have to worry about shipment of the item also I will wait for you to confirm and clear the check before the shipper come to pickup the item from you actually I should have handled this myself but i am not available to do that now i am currently away for my Company seminar that is why i want you to do this and i will pay you $50 to purchase the Versa check paper to print the check. This is the fastest and best method of payment because it is instant once you purchase business check paper all this process of printing and cashing of the E-check can be done within 2 hours.

Thanks

craigslist scams

Wed, 2008/02/13 - 11:28

I just wanted to post this because this person obviously has no shame in actually admitting to scamming people. It makes me sick to think that some innocent person might fall for something like this. I hope this bastard gets caught!!!

WELL GOOD LUCK WITH THAT, REMEMBER WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND!!!! AND SURELY THE LOSS YOU BRING UPON OTHER’S WILL COME BACK TO YOU ONE DAY, I FEEL FOR YOU BECAUSE THERE’S A LOT OF PEOPLE OUT THERE THAT ARE TRYING TO GET AHEAD AND IT’S BASTARDS LIKE YOU THAT FUCK THEM EVEN MORE. BUT ONE DAY YOU’LL BE THAT PERSON, AND I HOPE YOU THINK OF ME WHEN IT HAPPENS TO YOU, I CAN SPEAK FROM EXPERIENCE LOUD AND CLEAR, PEACE AND GOD BLESS.

Hi ,
Thanks for being interested in buying 2000 Volkswagen Jetta. It is in a good condition, no scratches,no damages, never been implicated in any accidents,no problems at the engine, runs very well. The mileage of the car is 83387. It has clear title. The price is $2,800.00 USD firm. The only thing because i am selling it,because i divorced with my husband and after the divorce i own this car,now as a woman i don`t need it(don`t have driver license)...
The transaction will be made through eBay Company for our own protection. You will have 7 days to inspect and test drive it upon arrival with no obligation to buy. Should the car not be exactly as described, you can cancel the deal, and get a full refund of your money. If you wish to go on, please get back to me and give me your full name and your address. I am waiting for your response with any questions you may have.

Kind Regards

craig's list scam

Tue, 2008/02/19 - 19:24

This was the scam I am getting currently on a diamond ring I am posting on Craig's list

Sounds Good.
I will like to proceed with the transaction asap and my mode of payment will be via Bank check drawn on my bank (Bank Of America) as there are too many scams on internet with bogus Money Orders and personal checks,The item will be picked up from you by my shipper so you don't have to worry about shipment of the item also the check will be sent with the fund to cover cost of item and also shipment by my shipping company due to company policy the amount i placed with my company can only be written on a single check so that is why i want you to receive these amount and send the differience to my shippers that will arrange the pickup when the check clears at your bank,Once the bank verify and cash the check you will deduct your fund and send the excess fund to the shipping company C.E.O to prepare all shipment papers and insurance for pickup of the item ,i should have handled this myself but i am not available to do this now i am currently away for my company seminar that is why i want you to do this to facilitate the transaction so proceed to delete the advert of the item if my mode of payment is accepted and get back to me asap with your Full Name,Physical address and Phone # to send the check to you.
Regards
Mark

He never asked me a question about the ring, offered to pay more than it's worth. I told him I'd accept cash only so we'll see what he responds with.

My lowest price is AUD$5200. At this price it is a steal. Currently, the only payment method I know for overseas is western union. But I am in the process of setting up paypal today. Will forward details as available.

Thanks for your prompt response.I really appreciate your response to my interest in buying your kawasaki for sale.Like i said earlier am based in Ontario Canada okay.I would like to know the least price at which you would sell it to me.Am assuring you that I will be the new owner as I'ld like you to consider it sold......Concerning the shipping,it will be taking care of by me so you need not to bother about that okay.My private shipper whom has been working with me for over 5 years now, would be coming over to your location for the pick up......Let me know if this arrangement suites you inorder for payment to be made.
Pls get back to me immediately,

Linda Brenda.

NB---Just to let you know the reason why am purcchasing your kawasaki zx7r from AUD is because i have been looking for this particular type of model which i couldn't find here in Ontawa Canada at that your affordable price you are willing to sell it to me .

Hi Mrs Linda Brenda

THankyou for the interest in the Zx7r. It is in excellent condition, bar a couple of small scratches where I had a tank bag on it. I have already organised for a repair to them, however, am waiting for it to be booked in. The bike is all black, original Kawasaki color scheme. The bike has original exhaust with a small scratch on the rear end or the exhaust. Has been serviced every 5000km (3000miles). Forks and seals recently done.

I have it advertised at AUD$5800, but would consider all offers above AUD$5200.
If you would like me to organise photos please advise.

Thanks

well isn't this hilarious, i've almost been caught out. She has sent the exact same emails to me except for the item of purchase.
We are currently at the stage that she just informed me that her "client" made out the cheque with the shipping fees "accidently" added onto, and when we recieve the cheque we are to transfer the balance via western union to her "shipping company"
I can't believe it!!!
We haven't recieved this cheque yet, but does anyone have any idea what we should do next? Can we catch them out somehow, i'm thinking police would probably be best bet at the moment?
i'm so glad i found this website before we got ripped off!!

here's a sample of what she first sent me- sound familiar?
