  2. Internet Scams and Fraud
  3. Another form of Internet Fraud: Usenet Forsale Scam

By Khalid on 2006/08/08 - 10:02, last updated 2006/08/08 - 10:02

Classified ads on craigslist attract scammers from Nigeria and elsewhere. Here is a recent example when I was trying to sell something. Not that I asked for $375, and was offered more for it.Here is the first message I got:

pls can you tell me if this item is still for sale ?and the price

When I replied it was available, this was the reply:

I will have to inform you that i am okay with the price of the [item name] ($375)condition terms are also okay with me,For the Shippment from your location,i have my SHIPPER as soon as we seal this Transaction from your end. I have a CLIENT of my that is owning me some Fund in United Kingdom that will issue you the cheque of ($2000) soon as you receive the cheque and when cleared you will deduct the cost of the [item name] and the remaining balance will be send to the Shipper through western union money transfer for the pick up from your location. If this is okay by you, do e-mail me the following detail FULL NAME ON CHEQUE:CONTACTED ADDRESS:MOBILE&LANDLINE PHONE NUMBER:AND ZIP CODEI will compensate you $50 to remove the advert from the site and will wait until the cheque clear before the pick up commence.hope to read from you today.

This is a classic scam that involves you wiring them money via Western Union, and they sending you a fake cashier cheque.

Cell phone number?

Mon, 2008/10/20 - 23:19

This happened to me as well, and when I got the huge check I definitely knew something was not right. The thing is and I feel like an idiot about it, I gave them my address ( a secondary one) but I gave them my proper cell phone number. Should I be worried about them doing anything with the cell phone number?

I dont think you should

Sun, 2008/10/26 - 16:13

I dont think you should worry about it,cause they have to spend their own money to call you.just mess with their head if they call(probably from a resticted #)In fact, encourage them to call back and tie them up as much as you can,it can be quite entertaining if you are creative....

scams

Wed, 2011/05/11 - 03:44

Don't worry about retaliation...these scumbags use "Magic-Jacks" for the most part, and they do not want to maintain any contact w/ a target/Mark, once the "jig is up"....In fact, have a bit of fun calling them up, as most often a number for their "mover" or "attorney", Real Estate agent"......is given when the idiot's think they have you. Don't let up, Call the Feds, do whatever you can think of to reveal these sleazy, dumb-ass crooks who cannot even master the use of very basic English!!!!Actually, they probably don't even bother to try....people are so easily duped, it seems, that the pigs don't even really have to raise their game...Heads -up, people!

Dear x,
I will be glad to arrange a viewing and meeting you in person,However, I need to you to know that I just moved to XX to take of a Job so I am currently based and live and work in South Milton Keynes and If I have to arrange a viewing for you, I would have to travel all the way from South Milton Keynes for the viewing and I am sure you realize it is quite a Journey for me. I have had a few
people in past who told me they were interested in renting my property and wanted me to come over for the viewing, I came over for the viewing but it all turned out to be a total waste of time for, because some of them would not turn up for the viewing, those that turn up were just viewing for the fun of it, they saw the pictures and wanted
to see what it looked like in real life because my house is well appealing, and some wanted to explain to me that they did not have the Security Deposit for the house and they would not me to let them move in Just like that, a few of them were even on Housing Benefits (DSS)
which of course I already told them I do not accept Housing Benefit (Except they can afford at lease the Security Deposit in Full in Person). For these reasons, I will have to verify that you can afford the property and you are serious about my property before coming over
from South Milton Keynes and that you are not on Housing Benefits.
You would need to locate a Western Union or Money Gramm Outlet close to you, Then make the Transfer of the SECURITY DEPOSIT AND 1ST MONTH RENT to Your Friend or Family member (Not to me), then you would get
back to me with a scanned copy of the Western Union or Money Gramm receipt copy which I confirm on Western Union Website or by Calling Money Gramm customer Care line. After the verification, and all goes well, I will give you a call to confirm a viewing for you. The Western
Union or Money Gramm Charges would be deducted from the 1st Month rent.
I would have to verify the Transaction before your Friend or Family Member or Who you must have sent the money to can go pick up the
money.

Regards,

XXX

You think you're

Sat, 2012/02/11 - 00:33

You think you're smart?!!!...You believe yourself to be a genius, slicker than snot, with full command of the English language, don't you??? What a waste. What an under-achieving Asshole you are. You probably are somewhat intelligent...at least when compared w/ your coniving, pig-digging counterparts. Hey trick, why don't you use your brains for something...anything better than a see-through scam. It does wear heavy on your soul, you know...at the end of the day. Bye Douchebag!

Scammer

Tue, 2008/11/18 - 10:32

I was contacted by one of these scammers while trying to sell my truck. Simple thing to do is copy and paste to you all so you can see and wont get scammed by this same man.

From: donwilliams003@live.com

Kindly get back to me if its still available for sale.

then I replied...
Yes it sure is for sale still but my wonderful daughter cant seem to find the keys right now!!! I LOVE that girl! Anyway. as soon as I find them I can email you back and let you know if you would like me to

his reply was this!!! Total obvious scam!!

Sounds Good
Am satisfied with the condition & price. My mode of payment is through a certified cashiers check drawn on Bank Of America which is generally accepted at any bank, you will deposite and cash the check before we proceed with the shipment, don't worry about the shipment fees, I will hire a private shipper to make a pickup after you must have cashed the check, your full name which the check will be issued to and your contact address where the check will be delivered will be required. The check we be delivered to your location within 1-2 business days. Kindly remove the Ad if you are interested in selling to me to avoid interruption by others. I will be awaiting your reply.
