  3. Another form of Internet Fraud: Usenet Forsale Scam

By Khalid on 2006/08/08 - 10:02, last updated 2006/08/08 - 10:02

Classified ads on craigslist attract scammers from Nigeria and elsewhere. Here is a recent example when I was trying to sell something. Not that I asked for $375, and was offered more for it.Here is the first message I got:

pls can you tell me if this item is still for sale ?and the price

When I replied it was available, this was the reply:

I will have to inform you that i am okay with the price of the [item name] ($375)condition terms are also okay with me,For the Shippment from your location,i have my SHIPPER as soon as we seal this Transaction from your end. I have a CLIENT of my that is owning me some Fund in United Kingdom that will issue you the cheque of ($2000) soon as you receive the cheque and when cleared you will deduct the cost of the [item name] and the remaining balance will be send to the Shipper through western union money transfer for the pick up from your location. If this is okay by you, do e-mail me the following detail FULL NAME ON CHEQUE:CONTACTED ADDRESS:MOBILE&LANDLINE PHONE NUMBER:AND ZIP CODEI will compensate you $50 to remove the advert from the site and will wait until the cheque clear before the pick up commence.hope to read from you today.

This is a classic scam that involves you wiring them money via Western Union, and they sending you a fake cashier cheque.

If it's from Kansas the

Thu, 2008/12/04 - 00:11

If it's from Kansas the routing number and account number are real, BUT STOLEN. I called the bank and they confirmed that the check is fraudulent. It will bounce in 5 to 7 business days which is why the scam works, they try to rush you to send the money before you find out. They don't actually ever come to pick up the item they purchased, they keep the money that you paid for shipping and disapear.

Scam?

Wed, 2008/11/26 - 14:32

I recently am trying to sell a guitar on craigslist and it seems very much like the scams you made.
Here are the emails exchanged. Did I do the right thing and does it even seem fishy to you?

please is your posted ad still available for sale ?
Karen.E

It is still for sale yes. I actually only placed my ad this morning so you are the first person to respond. Are you insterested in it?

Thank you very much for the response, Anyways, I'll be mailing a check via my Bank to you due to my job transfer and shortness of time. However, to ease the pick up, I'll be engaging the services of a mover to do that after the check has been cashed. I'll need this details below to mail out the payment to you asap...

• The Full name on the Check
• Mailing address be it residential or office
• Cell phone # and
• Final Price of the item

I'll appreciate it if the item is kept for me. Thank you for the understanding.

Regards,
Karen. E

Hello again,

I appreciate the email but I would like to ask a few questions before we proceed. Obviously, as you may know there are alot of scams on craigslist so I am very apprehensive to do any kind of transaction without meeting face to face. Do you have a paypal account as I would much prefer that payment is done that way? There are too many scams where checks are sent, the check is cashed, the mover comes to pick up the item and then the check bounces several weeks later. I am in no way meaning to offend you, I just am trying to be smart about the sale. If you do not have a paypal account I would like to meet face to face with whoever is picking it up and exchange cash. I will not make the sale with checks, sorry if this causes any trouble,
thanks

scam or me just being paranoid? it seems too close to the rest to not be and the email address is a random name then 01 at ymail.com

Check Scam Seller 'Daniel Edward'

Sat, 2008/12/27 - 18:39

Had the same thing happen to me only the buyers name was "Daniel Edward" (email: daniel.edward01@yahoo.com). I was selling an xbox360 for $300 but he offered $450 for it. I received the check today and of course didn't cash it because it seemed pretty fishy. I wanted to make sure that it wasn't some scam so I google'd it and this website came up. Thank goodness!

Another scam from Harry Lucas

Wed, 2009/01/14 - 09:53

I just received a request to purchase an item I currently have on Craigs List. I hope people read this before they fall for his scam. He is using the Harry Lucas 84 hotmail account right now.
The story was the same. He lives in Seattle. He is on a business trip and would pay extra 50.00 to take the item off of Craigs List. He'll have a mover pick up. It's a surprise birthday gift for his sister. (No woman would want this item by the way) He wants to pay with Cashiers Check. The red flag was raised as soon as he said birthday gift for his sister and then for sure with the Cashiers Check.
Please be careful people!

Harry Lucas on Gmail

Fri, 2009/09/04 - 07:36

This is what 'harry lucas' sent:

Thanks for the prompt response, please i will like to make an instant
purchase so i would appreciate it if you can withdraw the ad from
Craigslist.i don't mind adding an extra $20 dolls for you to take the
ad down from criagslist,i want to be rest assured that nobody else
gets a hold of he item.I will also like you to know that i will be
paying via company certified cashier check. It will be overnight
payment due to the distance.i will take care of that.So i will need
you to provide me with the following information to facilitate the
mailing of the check:-

1.Your full name.
2.Your mailing address[residential].
3.Your phone number.

**i am located in seattle but currently on a business trip.i just want
to purchase the item for her as a surprise birthday present as this
day is around the corner.i would also like to pay a.s.a.p and my
sister's mover will come pick it up but i hope that it is still in a
very good condition?Have a splendid day

This is what I replied to him:

I apologize harry, but I intend to deal locally, in person, and in cash. Too many deals have gone wrong with other forms of payment. I just sold my banjo for cash, and I will do the same with the mandolin. If you sister's mover would like to purchase in cash locally, I'm fine with that too, we can meet in at my church parking lot. If you give me your phone number I'll call to talk to you personally about the mandolin and a meeting place

Craig's list or Kijiji scam

Wed, 2009/02/04 - 15:21

I had an exchange with someone claiming to be looking for a room. They were to receive funds from a client of theirs and had the 'client' forward me the cheque with the balance being sent Western Union. When I went to cash the cheque Money Mart called the police and reported I was trying to pass a fraudulent cheque. Fortunately I had all the emails saved, could prove I had had an ad, and even had the envelope the cheque came in. The police haven't charged me but it could have been a lot worse.
