Here is a classic scam from Craigslist. They offer to buy your item you advertised via classified for more money than you ask for ($375 in my case, he offered $500).They even give you a bleeding heart story about wife dying in accident.

From: ike derico Alright,i live in North Georgia United State.Am quite comfortable with the condition of the item since i wont be making any repairs on it,i will like to offer you $500 including packing materials without you paying for any shipping charges b'cos i already have an account with FedEx,i would have loved to make the payment in cash and carry but we are not in the same state so i will like to go ahead with the payment by sending you a Money Order But i will need your contact infomation in which the money will be deliver ok.I wonna buy this [item name] for my step son to fulfill the promise his mum made before she died,i lost my lovely wife to an auto accident on 29th of June 2005 and since then i and her step son john have been living seperately and i want to buy this item for him because his mom promised him before death took her away from us and i think with this i and tobi can live as a family. Kindly get back to me immediately you receive my e-mail and i will like you to take it off craigslist for auction cos am serious in buying it.So let me have your full infomation ofr pyment to be made.... Best Regards. .I.Derico

Note how they can't pick up proper English names? I got another from 'ortega hanson'.

craigslist scam

Tue, 2008/12/30 - 13:58

I am trying to sell an item on craigslist and had basically the same response you did. I'm always leary when I sell something through there but it seemed like it might be ok. I checked w/ my bank and they said a certified check is fraud proof. what would make this a "bad deal"?

Fraud Proof

Thu, 2009/02/19 - 19:49

Because the check is counterfiet just like fake money. You can produce money at home and you can produce checks. All you need is a valid routing number so the bank's computer can identify what bank it is through, then you can generate any account number you like because the bank won't get that far till they process it.

scam buyer on Craigslist

Tue, 2009/01/20 - 18:37

My scammer offered to add $50.00 to the price of my item if I took it off Craigslist so they would be sure and get it. Here is the email they sent me:

Thanks for the prompt response.I'm currently out of town but would
love to make an instant
purchase,so please do withdraw the advert from Craigslist.I dont mind
adding an extra $50 dollars for you to take the advert down from
craigslist so that i can be rest assured that am in hand of the item.
I will also like you to know that i will be paying via check, and it
will be an over night payment due to the distance .You dont need to
bother your self with the shipment ok,I will take care of that.So I
will need you to provide me with the following information to
facilitate the mailing of the check.
1.Your full name.
2.Your mailing address,be it residential or postal address.
3..Your phone number.
**Once again ,I will like you to know that you will not be responsible
for shipping.
I will have my mover come over as soon as you have cashed the check**
Do Have a nice day,
My Warmest Regards
Beka

BE CAREFUL.....I emailed them back that it would be cash only and I never heard back...if it sounds too good to be true...it isn't true!

My husband and I were also

Wed, 2008/09/03 - 16:21

My husband and I were also involved in a similar scam. We were selling a boat for 700.00 and" Ben Cheadle" emailed us with interest. He sent a check (that we later found out was no good) for 3,000.00. He instructed us to cash and sent the remander of money to a lady by the name of Michelle Gomer. He called our house from a private number. He has a very deep accent. He of course did not fall for this. We spoke to a local police station and they told us to destroy the check. They said that if we were to deposit the check, they could track our banking information from this. They can request a reciept of deposit and get all of your bank info. THAT IS SCARY.

Trying to understand this more

Mon, 2008/10/06 - 21:01

I just posted a reply on this page before I actually scrolled down and read some more and saw your story. I didn't quite understand how it could end up a scam with only asking your address and stuff like that. I wouldn't give my address to a stranger any way, that scares me so it threw up a red flag. However, I didn't know they could get all that information like our bank account info!!! Thanks for posting that. I have another question though, in my scammer email he offered to pay by Money Order, so how would that have hurt me? Would I have to take that to my bank as well, and then he could track my account info??

Thanks
