  3. Another form of Internet Fraud: Usenet Forsale Scam

By Khalid on 2006/08/08 - 10:12, last updated 2006/08/08 - 10:12

Here is a classic scam from Craigslist. They offer to buy your item you advertised via classified for more money than you ask for ($375 in my case, he offered $500).They even give you a bleeding heart story about wife dying in accident.

From: ike derico Alright,i live in North Georgia United State.Am quite comfortable with the condition of the item since i wont be making any repairs on it,i will like to offer you $500 including packing materials without you paying for any shipping charges b'cos i already have an account with FedEx,i would have loved to make the payment in cash and carry but we are not in the same state so i will like to go ahead with the payment by sending you a Money Order But i will need your contact infomation in which the money will be deliver ok.I wonna buy this [item name] for my step son to fulfill the promise his mum made before she died,i lost my lovely wife to an auto accident on 29th of June 2005 and since then i and her step son john have been living seperately and i want to buy this item for him because his mom promised him before death took her away from us and i think with this i and tobi can live as a family. Kindly get back to me immediately you receive my e-mail and i will like you to take it off craigslist for auction cos am serious in buying it.So let me have your full infomation ofr pyment to be made.... Best Regards. .I.Derico

Note how they can't pick up proper English names? I got another from 'ortega hanson'.

get scammers back!!

Thu, 2010/12/09 - 13:36

Here is an excerpt from interview with a scammer in Nigeria: "...Another time I got into big trouble because of a victim who kept saying he had sent money when he hadn’t. He sent me 4 fake wire transfer codes and each time the boss went to pick up the money they told him that the number was wrong. The last time the office staff called the police and the boss had to run away. I got beat really bad for that one. I think the guy was just playing with me for fun and never had any real money."

There it is. Just pretend to send them money, and they get the sh**t kicked out of em!

I am so glad at my tugging instincts!!

Wed, 2010/12/15 - 15:43

I am so glad that I felt leery about the email I received to the point that I researched the email address.
I posted a sale for a coach handbag and wallet for $250 and almost immediately I received an email from
a person just asking if it was still for sale. I responded yes and didn't hear back from the person until a
week later or so. What caught my attention (thank goodness for good photographic memory) was that the
email address seemed different. I wasn't quite sure yet was almost positive that this person had emailed me
the first time from a different address. So I went into my email archive and pulled up the original email and sure
enough it was a different email address. Now, I know perhaps that isn't too odd because I personally have
different email addresses for work, personal, junk mail...etc but if you are trying to buy something I would think
that you would use the same email address through the whole transaction just to make the other person feel
safe and so that they won't feel that they are being scammed. Luckily I pay attention to great detail. The person
who sent me the email is named Shannon Popp. I wanted to believe that maybe she was different, not a scammer
but after reading the posts on here I believe she too is a scammer. The following is what she sent me:

Hi,
Sorry for the long reply.I am willing to pay your asking price.I will pay you with money order as its the only way i can pay you at the moment due to the fact that i am away for a family emergency.I will make arrangement for the pick-up after payment have been received by you. I dont mind adding an extra $20 just for you to keep it in my favor.Reply with your full name and address where payment should be sent, and a phone number where i can reach you. Please take the posting off craigslist today and consider it sold to me.
Expecting to hear from you soon.
Thanks.

So not only did the email grab my attention but the whole sending me and extra $20 sounded too good to be true. I know there are generous people out there but for some reason I didn't feel the generosity in this email, I felt awkwardness. So thank you for all those who posted their stories! I hope all of your stories and my own can help many more people out there.

Got a very similar response

Sun, 2010/12/19 - 14:41

Got a very similar response from a hena siddiqi. "henasiddiqi@gmail.com" I thought it sounded fishy so I googled the name and it was a Dr. in NY and there was another in TX. Out of only 2 in the entire world neither one would be with in driving distance to pick this thing up because it's huge! I am half tempted to call the Dr. in NY and tell her some one is using her name. But I fixed this problem. I told her I will only accept cash in person and will no longer recieve emails from that name. HA!!!

Hello,
Sorry for the late response, However, i will need your name and address for payment,As am only able to make payment by check, at this time b/c i am away on assignment. It will be nice if you can send me more pictures. It will take few days for the payment to get to you. As per pick-up, I will make arrangement for the pick-up after payment has been received by you. I don't mind adding fifty dollars so you can keep it in my favor. Please take the posting off Craigslist today and consider it sold to me, Include your phone number.Expecting to hear from you soon.
Regards.......
Thanks and God bless as i await for your sincere response.

Ok just wanted to make sure nothing is been left out.
I will be buying this for the price you have listed it for.Payment will be sent using PayPal and i will handle the PayPal surcharge as well.I will arrange with someone to have this picked up for your location once i have paid as i am out of town at the moment. In the meantime, can you send me more pictures (if available)?

I have many who want to buy that live in town, but I was curious as to the paypal idea. Scam written all over it, a quick google search and my suspicions are confirmed. Glad I had other offers though or may have been more tempted :>)
