  3. Another form of Internet Fraud: Usenet Forsale Scam

By Khalid on 2006/08/08 - 10:12, last updated 2006/08/08 - 10:12

Here is a classic scam from Craigslist. They offer to buy your item you advertised via classified for more money than you ask for ($375 in my case, he offered $500).They even give you a bleeding heart story about wife dying in accident.

From: ike derico Alright,i live in North Georgia United State.Am quite comfortable with the condition of the item since i wont be making any repairs on it,i will like to offer you $500 including packing materials without you paying for any shipping charges b'cos i already have an account with FedEx,i would have loved to make the payment in cash and carry but we are not in the same state so i will like to go ahead with the payment by sending you a Money Order But i will need your contact infomation in which the money will be deliver ok.I wonna buy this [item name] for my step son to fulfill the promise his mum made before she died,i lost my lovely wife to an auto accident on 29th of June 2005 and since then i and her step son john have been living seperately and i want to buy this item for him because his mom promised him before death took her away from us and i think with this i and tobi can live as a family. Kindly get back to me immediately you receive my e-mail and i will like you to take it off craigslist for auction cos am serious in buying it.So let me have your full infomation ofr pyment to be made.... Best Regards. .I.Derico

Note how they can't pick up proper English names? I got another from 'ortega hanson'.

He writes the following in regards to an online craigslist ad:

Good day and hope you are doing great?.My assistant told me that you still have the item for sale. I am willing to pay your asking price,You will receive your payment in 4-6 working days,i would have loved to come and see it in person but due to the busy nature of my job that wont permit me,i will be making payment by money order or check and i will be needing your phone number, full name, address or p.o box address to make the payment to as i do not want to lose this sales to other potential buyers,if you will keep it in my favor,i dont mind adding thirty ($30) dollar for the delay.pick-up wont be a problem as i already have made an arrangement for that once you receive payment.

The scam is that they claim

Wed, 2010/12/22 - 19:43

The scam is that they claim to have sent you a money order for too much money and want you to cash it and refund them the extra money. The Money Order is no good and by the time the bank processes it, most people have already sent them the refund. I got the same thing from a Frank Thornton

I replied to him and told him that I do not accept money orders or cashiers checks and if he wants my rocking chair he can bring cash when he picks it up. I told him I would meet him at my bank with the item and if he needed a cashiers check for his records he could purchase it there and give it to me. I told him I would not give him my address or phone number, that if he wanted it, he would have to meet me at my bank. That way it would be legitimate. What do you want to bet he never gets back to me.

I got the fake money order for more than the asking price of my item on craigslist.com

As soon as the money order came I was asked for the difference in 3 or 4 emails a day because "I am in london for a short business trip and i will be needing my balance to board a flight to the state thats why i want you to send my balance via western union to the details i provide you with.Pls endeavor to do that right now and get back to me ASAP."

and "I will appreciate if you can send part of my balance today cause i need to pay my hotel bills which will expire today.Jack you can deduct an $50 to gas your car to any western union outlet closer to you and send the balance ASAP today.
Thanks"

emails were coming from an IP in Nigeria. Wow.. shocker!

It's probably one person or a few people working in a shop copy/pasting sample responses. They all have at least one line in common.
If they were smart, they would compensate for their terrible english abilities by creating fake sales and using the responses they get from those posts instead of using google translate.

I am willing to pay your asking price,You will receive your payment in 4-5 working days,i would have loved to come and see it in person but i am currently on a business trip in the UK ,and that wont permit me to. Craigslist Scam

Thu, 2010/12/30 - 11:28

Respondent offered $200.00 more than the asking price and asked that I deal with third party shipper, who would collect the goods "unseen" for shipment to UK. Requested photos of product, stating that he had just moved to UK and would not be viewing goods himself.

Another to this growing list.

I had already given him my address before I got his email raising the red flags. At this point I hope to get his phoney money order as a souvenir.
(Here's some of our correspondence):

I'm glad you still have it for sale,i would have love to come and see it,but my scheduled is very tight.I will mail out your payment once you provide your full name.phone number and address.I can only pay via money order as am on a business trip now,pls let me know where to send your payment to because i wouldn't want to lose it to someone else.I don't mind adding Thirty ($30) dollars so you can keep it in my favor, you should get your payment in 4-6 working days i will appreciate if you can get the ad off craigslist so i can be sure you are keeping it in my favor..Please let me know as soon as you receive it so i can start making arrangement for the pick-up.Thanks
Wilson

Hi Howard,
Your payment has been sent but there is something i think i must bring to your notice immediately. I just discovered there is an error in the payment sent to you. My assistant sent the payment meant for another item thats more expensive than yours. I have called the post office to see if they could retrieve it but nothing positive. I really dont know what to do now. Please and Please, you can go ahead and cash out the Money Order at your Bank when you receive it, deduct your payment and send the balance via western union to the details i will provide you with. Can i trust you to do that for me?
