  3. Another form of Internet Fraud: Usenet Forsale Scam

By Khalid on 2006/08/08 - 10:12, last updated 2006/08/08 - 10:12

Here is a classic scam from Craigslist. They offer to buy your item you advertised via classified for more money than you ask for ($375 in my case, he offered $500).They even give you a bleeding heart story about wife dying in accident.

From: ike derico Alright,i live in North Georgia United State.Am quite comfortable with the condition of the item since i wont be making any repairs on it,i will like to offer you $500 including packing materials without you paying for any shipping charges b'cos i already have an account with FedEx,i would have loved to make the payment in cash and carry but we are not in the same state so i will like to go ahead with the payment by sending you a Money Order But i will need your contact infomation in which the money will be deliver ok.I wonna buy this [item name] for my step son to fulfill the promise his mum made before she died,i lost my lovely wife to an auto accident on 29th of June 2005 and since then i and her step son john have been living seperately and i want to buy this item for him because his mom promised him before death took her away from us and i think with this i and tobi can live as a family. Kindly get back to me immediately you receive my e-mail and i will like you to take it off craigslist for auction cos am serious in buying it.So let me have your full infomation ofr pyment to be made.... Best Regards. .I.Derico

Note how they can't pick up proper English names? I got another from 'ortega hanson'.

Rental scam

Mon, 2009/03/30 - 16:53

Thank you for saving me any more time messing around with this! I got the EXACT same letter using the names Jackson Morgan and wife Sarah Morgan offering a home in Ocean City, MD for $900, utilities included! The scary thing is... I also gave my information before I started getting suspicious. When I sent an email stating I would not send them any $ until I could verify they were the owners and the property actually exists, I got this response:

"The people i would had loved them to show you the house i mean the people i really trust are also here with me on the missionary trip,I understand you perfectly and i also understand your concern but I want you to know something and it's true like the bible said"The truth and only the Truth shall set you free, thus says the lord of host".I'm telling you the truth now as a dedicated Christian is against my doctrine to rip people off there money which they labored so hard for,i didn't leave my home all the way to West Africa to rip people off their money.I know what i have been through in all my missionary trips especially in West Africa,I'm a human being like you and i have feelings like you do,i also believe that God is watching every step we take that is why i made the house so inexpensive because i believe everybody deserves a home both the rich and the poor so you don't have to be afraid because i know i can trust you that is why I'm giving you me house based on trust. And in this life what goes around comes around which is what will happen to me if i rip you off your money believe me i will not like such thing to happen to me or my family. So i don't have any reason to lie to you knowing the consequences involved in it.

But i also promise you one thing that you will never ever regret this as long as the Lord God liveth because he say that we are his children and will never be brought to shame in any manner. So you don't have anything to worry about that.Everything necessary will be delivered as promised.

Thanks and remain blessed"

My only consolation is that these guys will probably fry in hell, since I suppose there is no way to find out who they are and stop them. Thankfully this is out here and hopefully it keeps more people from being ripped-off!

Thank you for saving me any more time messing around with these jerks! I got the same exact letter with the name Jackson Morgan and his wife Sarah Morgan! I would not have sent them any money without verifying that they owned the property first, but now I can stop wasting time and find a real place to live. Scary thing is... I also filled out the application and now they have my boyfriends and my information. Hopefully no future contact from them!!!!

Another Scam

Thu, 2009/02/19 - 19:47

I'm probably on the back page here, but I hope that people read this. I received an email:

Hey
I actually wanna buy the Laptop for my Daughter. she works at the United States Information Service (USIS) in Africa, she currently got transfered as an international
consultant. She laments that life over there is very boring though She is gradually adapting to the new environment. I have a very tight schedule due to my kinda job, So i want you to help me ship it to her over there after Payment of your item. i will take care of the shipping cost. i can pay you via paypal, if you've got an account with them or can pay you with MARCHENT EXPRESS ONLINE MONEY ORDER,it save and also protect individual in a transaction. for the money order all i need is your full name and address for the payment. it's for delivery purpose because they deliver cash payment to one's doorsteps just like DHL,FEDEX etc delivers parcel to one's doorsteps.

I will give you her address to you for shipping as soon as the payment reaches you. I will be very grateful to hear from you soonest.
Warm regards,
Scott.

NOTE: I will be paying you $700.00 USD for both the cost price and the shipping fee. I would prefer the shipping USPS For Faster Delivery. I made an inquiry to their office and i think it will cost about $80 to ship via USPS.

*****************************************************************
I did send an electronic invoice to him from PayPal but then I cancelled it. I researched USIS and it doesn't exist. The email for this is scott_garry007@hotmail.com. After reading more, all emails are from free accounts like Gmail, Hotmail, or Yahoo!

Possible Craigslist scam

Fri, 2009/02/20 - 19:37

I received a response from a woman who wanted to purchase an item I has listed on CL. She offered me $50 less than I was asking and said she would be paying with a money order. She already had a Fed Ex account and she would arrange to have them pick it up. A few days later she said that there was a slight problem... She had been out of town on business and her assistant had mistakenly mailed me an amount for $1000 more than our agreed price. Right away red flags went up...She said when I receive it I could keep $20 extra for my trouble and then mail her the balance of the money. OK - I was born at night but not LAST night!

Anybody get an e-mail message

Mon, 2009/02/23 - 18:40

Anybody get an e-mail message from "micheal.chult01@gmail.com"? It seems that spammers/scammers have an embarrassing tendency to use poor grammar and bad spelling. I live in a small town, and the guy e-mailed me saying he "will be in the State" soon because he is doing a modeling gig here. Uh, last I checked the place I live has little culture and part of that culture definitely does not include fashion.

What a bummer, I was hoping to have a tutoring client =/

John Deere

Thu, 2009/02/26 - 12:20

Just got an email from deerejjohn1@aol.com trying to send a money order for a fridge and then would have someone pick it up later. Obviously, I told him no thanks, but please don't let this guy scam you. It will be a fake money order. He went by the name John Deere.

Thanks!

john deere strikes again

Fri, 2009/02/27 - 02:05

I'm not as smart as some of the rest of you. John Deere wanted my Ikea loft bed shipped to Georgia. He sent two money orders totalling $1300; I was to wire all but $400 to his movers. My banker alerted me to the scam, kept the money orders to run them through the issuer, and emailed Deere back and told him my bank was sitting on the funds until they cleared his bank in 10-14 days. I haven't heard back from him, and I hope he gets nailed for the $1300--I certainly won't.

john deere attempted strike

Sun, 2009/03/22 - 13:55

john deere attempt to scam me for a purchase seemed very suspicious to me. I recieved an email stating he/she was hearing impaired and asked me to remove my ad. A certified money order would be mailed to me for the amount of purchase and mover would come to pickup the item at a convenient date. Was to provide him/her with my name, address address and phone number. Thanks to your previous comments I became alerted to this scam. Don't expect to hear back from him/her.
