Craigslist classified for used car: Cheque fraud scam

  1. Home
  2. Internet Scams and Fraud
  3. Another form of Internet Fraud: Usenet Forsale Scam

By Khalid on 2006/09/09 - 18:28, last updated 2006/09/09 - 18:28

I recently listed a car for sale on craigslist and other local classified ad services. This is one reply I got, which is clearly an attempt at scamming:

From: Dave Smith <goldenwum12@yahoo.com>Subject: [The title of the classified ad for the car]Hello,I just viewed your car posting on craigslist and i have interest on it i will like to know the present condition and two more pictures of the car before i proceed with the transaction. Thanks

Problem is, the scammer is not very smart. I did not posted pictures to begin with, so there are no more pictures. So, I sent this reply:

From: meTo: Dave Smith <goldenwum12@yahoo.com>Pictures attached.

I intentionally did not attach any pictures. A genuine buyer would have noticed this of course. Instead, the scammer proceeded with the next step, revealing his true intent:

From Dave Smith <goldenwum12@yahoo.com>To: meHello,Thanks for your reply i got all your information about the car and am ok with it, i will be making your payment today i need your full name and address to make your payment today through electronic check i will handle the shipment myself. All what you need about the mode of payment is to get a Blank check paper and magnetic versa ink to print the check, the check will be sent to your email and you get it printed from it. You can get this materials from the following stores.1. Office Depot2. Office Max3. Staples Store 4. Stationery Store5. Compusa. When you get this materials you can print the check out and immediately after the printing you can then get the check cashed at your Bank or any bank of america branch around you I will wait for you to confirm and clear the check. The payment will be in excess as i will want you to contact my shipper with the excess fund for shipping the car after you must have confirmed and cashed the check.i will wait for your bank to clear the check so you can deduct your own money and send the excess fund to the shipper via Western Union Money Transfer so as to cover the cost of shipping the car from your place to it's destination. I will add extra 100$ for the purchasing of check paper and magnetic versa ink.For more information about the mode of payment you can check the website www.qchex.com and know more about it .Dont worry i will handle the shipping myself with my shipper. you can IM on this ID goldenwum10@yahoo.com or call me on 9145954296 for more information. Thanks and God Bless

This is a classic scam where a fake cheque is sent to the victim for more than the amount owed, and the difference is to be wired to the scammer.

Craigslist car scam from "mother of a soldier killed in Iraq"

Thu, 2010/06/10 - 00:55

There are many hucksters out there slimy enough to pose as soldiers or the family members of fallen soldiers in order to hustle you out of a buck. I recently contacted someone about a car on craigslist, and the fraudster responded via email saying "she" was the mother of a soldier killed in Iraq and needed to sell his car ASAP. Google this and you'll find that it's very common. Here's the text of the email we received. I'm sure if we had followed up, we would have been given instructions about where and how to wire the money.

Hello ,

My name is Amy Ryan I am emailing you regarding the 2006 Volkswagen Passat 2.0T that I have for sale.My car is in perfect condition , with no need for additional repairs, no scratches, dings, special marks whatsoever, never been involved in any accidents. The interior looks great (NO SMOKING). It has 49,601 miles , automatic transmission , 2.0L L4 FI TURBO Engine, gasoline , Gray exterior and Tan interior . I have a clear and clean title for it , no liens or loans ready to be signed and notarized on your name.I'm selling my son's car, who died in Iraq four months ago and I want to get rid of it asap because the sight of it makes me think of him often and often and the pain is too great .Put yourself in my shoes and you'll do the same (selling the car of your dead son, no offence)As you probably noticed , the final price that i want for this SUV is $4,200.00 if you will buy it today or tomorrow .

Let me know where are you located and any other details you need about it.
My best wishes,

Amy

Craigslist SCAM!! 06/20/2010

Sun, 2010/06/20 - 22:08

These thieves need to take all this extra time they have and use it to find a job!
I received an email about my bedroom set that made me feel uneasy. I followed my gut instinct and and found this thread. I hope others do the same when they get a suspicous email offering an e-check for payment.I hate to think that honest sellers are getting scammed by these disturbing individuals. If something doesn't feel right....check it out. Below is the email I received offering payment via echeck:
==============================================
FROM: "LAURA RICE"

Bedroom set still available..Sounds Good. I'm very busy with work and other important obligations, I would have loved to meet you in person but presently I am out of town for business. I will like to proceed with payment via E-check.
E-check is a means of sending bank check to your e-mail instead of mailing it to you as I can't get around to mail a check at the moment. You will only need a business check paper to print the check from your e-mail and have it cashed or deposited at your bank for clearance. You will be able to purchase the business check paper at staples, walmart, office max or any stationery store for $20. I will reimburse you with for cost of supplies to your asking price. I'm in no rush with you till funds clears before pick up by the freight company .I will await your email with the following information so I can send the check to you once you have the supplies.

1) Full Name(2) Address and(3) Phone Number.

Get back to me asap.

Best Regards
Laura.

I received this similar email from "Laura Rice" on 6/23/11.

"Okay. I'm very busy with work and other important obligations, although I'd love to meet you in person, but presently out of town for business and will proceed with payment via E-check.
E-check is a means of sending bank check to your e-mail instead of mailing it to you, as I can't get around to mail a check at the moment. You only need a business check paper to print the check from your e-mail and have it cashed or deposited at your bank for clearance. You will be able to purchase the business check paper at staples, walmart, office max or any stationery store for $20. I will sum up the cost of supplies to your asking price. I'm willing to wait till funds clears before instructing the freight company to come for pick up. I will await your email with the following information so I can send the check to you once you have the supplies.

It's disgusting that this can happen.......get a life is right.

Smilesinme4@aol.com - What a Scam!!

Tue, 2010/07/13 - 10:30

It seems he’s still up to his old tricks again with a new twist. The nerve of this guy, not even bothering to chance his email address. I listed an item on Craig’s List for sale, and this Nigerian send me the following emails wanting me to set up a PayPal account and to click on the link that he sent me. I sent him my email address for PayPal because I already had an account, and he sent the fake PayPal email showing that he had put the money in my account. I logged on to my PayPal account, and there were no funds there. I don’t know who this email belongs to: kdaousarmy@yahoo.com, and I don’t know who Mike Lamberton is. This, itself, is a dead giveaway. I’m glad I didn’t click on the PayPal link that he provided. Someone needs to do something about this scammer. Who knows how many American people he has already taken advantage of and they are too embarrassed to say anything.

From: “Smilesinme4@aol.com”

Alrigh,
I am willing to purchase the item from you,to present my friend as a present gift for there wedding ceremony.I will like to proceed with payment as soon as possible. My form of payment would be via a (PAYPAL).You can read on how to signup account with paypal at www.paypal.com,I will probably need your paypal email address to send the money via your paypal account and i will add additional $50 to cover shipping cost via EXPRESS MAIL SERVICE OF USPS POST OFFICE.Get back to me immediately you have the account setup so that i will able to proceed and send the payment to you.

From: “Smilesinme4@aol.com

I receive your paypal email account.I just made your payment and the money was finally deducted from my credit card account.you are going to receive confirmation payment from paypal via your email immediately cause the money has been approved by there customer care department. Here is my friend information to ship the item for the wedding via Express Mail Service of USPS post office.Because they want the item to be bless by there pastor before engagement day. Please i want you to remove the paper work on the Box and you dont need to write the item actual price on the package is to reduce custom charges when package is arrive to my friend place,Because my friend inform me that if the paper work is not included on the item Box custom would not put big amount to receive the package in there country. And its would also reduce the shipping cost when you get to post office.I have added $50 to your asking price to cover the shipment cost.

Below is shipping info :

shannonkoch011@gmail.com sent

Wed, 2010/11/10 - 11:22

shannonkoch011@gmail.com sent me an e-mail saying they wanted to buy my wedding ring for a friend. They told me to send my paypal id number immedietly so they could get it asap. They also said they would give me an extra 100.00 for shipping. I didn't feel right about taking that much money for shipping so I asked where I would be sending it so I could go to the post office and get a price for them. They wouldn't answer my questions so I dicsided to google the e-mail address and this is what I find. I'm truly appalled that people do this!! I'm trying to sell my things before chrsitmas so I will have money for my kids. I'm a single mother and am disabled. This was a real wake up call for me. Thank you so very much for having a warning out there for this shannonkoch011@gmail.com! This is a real problem! I hope everyone is careful.
