  3. Another form of Internet Fraud: Usenet Forsale Scam

By Khalid on 2006/08/08 - 10:12, last updated 2006/08/08 - 10:12

Here is a classic scam from Craigslist. They offer to buy your item you advertised via classified for more money than you ask for ($375 in my case, he offered $500).They even give you a bleeding heart story about wife dying in accident.

From: ike derico Alright,i live in North Georgia United State.Am quite comfortable with the condition of the item since i wont be making any repairs on it,i will like to offer you $500 including packing materials without you paying for any shipping charges b'cos i already have an account with FedEx,i would have loved to make the payment in cash and carry but we are not in the same state so i will like to go ahead with the payment by sending you a Money Order But i will need your contact infomation in which the money will be deliver ok.I wonna buy this [item name] for my step son to fulfill the promise his mum made before she died,i lost my lovely wife to an auto accident on 29th of June 2005 and since then i and her step son john have been living seperately and i want to buy this item for him because his mom promised him before death took her away from us and i think with this i and tobi can live as a family. Kindly get back to me immediately you receive my e-mail and i will like you to take it off craigslist for auction cos am serious in buying it.So let me have your full infomation ofr pyment to be made.... Best Regards. .I.Derico

Note how they can't pick up proper English names? I got another from 'ortega hanson'.

i got this after i posted a table and chairs for sale:
Thanks for your reply, concerning the item am interested on purchasing from you,i really like the item a lot and i hope you consider it sold to me. I am paying you with Money Orders, it's the only mean's i can pay you. Kindly get back to me with your full name and address ,cell phone number so that i can ask my assistant to send you the payment,Please no Po box address will be accepted in sending payment. As per pick-up, I will make arrangement with the manager of the shipping company to come for pick-up after payment has been received and cashed by you so that will not be a burden on you. l would appreciate if you take the posting off craigslist today and consider it sold to me.I don't mind adding fifty dollars so you can keep it in my favor.
Expecting to hear from you.
this time he replied via a different email= Micheal Dover. The first time he replied from Humberto Clarke. I am a fraud investigator, and the easiest way you can sopt a fraudster is by backchecking freemail accounts. Each one was sent up the same way, with the same spelling and number suffix. I would rather trust someone who emailed me from a company email that i could privately verify. Thanks for all your feedback- it made blowing them off that much more fun!

Craigsllst scammers still going strong

Mon, 2009/04/13 - 17:02

Recently posted a bed and car to craigslist. Got almost two identical emails from people interested and offering to pay more than asking with a money order. Got suspicious, found this site. Emailed them and told them both sounded awful like a scam but would be interested if they didn't mind me waiting a few weeks to give over items. Also asked (since they were both using shipping companies) where they lived since I could probably get it delivered cheaper. Needless to say, haven't heard back from either. So watch out for these two:

CRAIGLIST SCAMMERS!!!!

Fri, 2009/04/17 - 16:10

This just happened to me lastnight, I had a bad feeling about it in the first place but my husband and I discussed it and thought it was legit. WAS I WRONG! Thank god I looked around on the web today for scams, we could not afford to be stuck with the shipping cost and getting no money ($700 total) for our furniture. It HIGHLY angers me that people are out here doing this!

Hello
Thanks for the prompt response,i really do appreciate it. i will love to make an instant purchase,so please do withdraw the advert from craigslist,i don't mind adding an extra $50 for you to take the advert down from the web site so that i can be rest assured that am in hand of the item.I would have loved to come take a look myself but my son is going for kidney transplant in few days and i have to do all the running around as my wife is so scared,i am sure you understand. I will also like you to know that i will be paying via a check, and it will be overnight payment due to the distance .You don't need to bother your self with the shipment ,i will take care of that.So i will need you to provide me with the following information to facilitate the mailing of the check.
1.Your full name
2.Your mailing address be it residential or postal address
3.Your phone #.
**Once again,I will like you to know that you will not be responsible for shipping i will have my mover come over as soon as you have received the money.please get back to me as soon as you can.
Have a nice day

MARCUS
