  3. Another form of Internet Fraud: Usenet Forsale Scam

By Khalid on 2006/08/08 - 10:12, last updated 2006/08/08 - 10:12

Here is a classic scam from Craigslist. They offer to buy your item you advertised via classified for more money than you ask for ($375 in my case, he offered $500).They even give you a bleeding heart story about wife dying in accident.

From: ike derico Alright,i live in North Georgia United State.Am quite comfortable with the condition of the item since i wont be making any repairs on it,i will like to offer you $500 including packing materials without you paying for any shipping charges b'cos i already have an account with FedEx,i would have loved to make the payment in cash and carry but we are not in the same state so i will like to go ahead with the payment by sending you a Money Order But i will need your contact infomation in which the money will be deliver ok.I wonna buy this [item name] for my step son to fulfill the promise his mum made before she died,i lost my lovely wife to an auto accident on 29th of June 2005 and since then i and her step son john have been living seperately and i want to buy this item for him because his mom promised him before death took her away from us and i think with this i and tobi can live as a family. Kindly get back to me immediately you receive my e-mail and i will like you to take it off craigslist for auction cos am serious in buying it.So let me have your full infomation ofr pyment to be made.... Best Regards. .I.Derico

Note how they can't pick up proper English names? I got another from 'ortega hanson'.

Exact same response that others received verbatim and have determined to be a scam from henrywed@divinestores.org:

Hi,
Thanks for your response. I'm going on a vacation to London but I will instruct my assistant to prepare and mail your payment which I'm sure you will get in about 4 - 6 business days. I'll add $20 extra for the delay. I'll pay by M O or cashier check so send me your info (i.e full name, mailing address and your phone number) so payment can be mailed out immediately. I will also make arrangement for pick-up which will be after you must have received and cashed the payment.
Awaiting your info.
Thanks

WOW!
Another name, more email addresses, same scam. THANK YOU to Google and the pit in my stomach that said something is not right that this person is offering $20 more than I was asking. So glad I did a little research first.

I guess that:
If it SEEMS too good to be true, it most likely IS!

My wife was selling a hot water heater and this "person" wanted to buy it - they said that they were heading to London on vacation and that his assistant would be sending payment and arranging for pick up. We were selling the item for around $400 and he sent a "cashiers check" from BofA for $4,500. Sent an email about how his assistant fouled up and could we cash the check and wire the balance of the funds to his "London" account. The envelope had no return address - he never gave his contact phone number, etc. But he sent a "cashiers check" - I could go to BofA and cash it - it should be legal tender so what am I missing in the scam?

Attempted Scam from Francis Conelly and Alex Conrad

Thu, 2010/11/18 - 12:14

I responded to an earlier "Francis Conelly" poster, and I wanted to share my string of e-mails with these "two" people. Hopefully by reading my e-mail string, people will be less inclined to fall for this sort of thing and learn how to deal with these sorts of people.
(Note: Their e-mails are in bold; e-mail separated by dashes.)

Hi Francis,

I appreciate your interest in my cello; however, I only do transactions face-to-face. As such, my ad is on a "first come, first serve" basis, which applies only to complete transactions done in person. I respectfully decline your offer, and hopefully you can find a cello that meets your needs after your business trip.

Thanks for your inquiry,

S

Hi,
In about a week you will get payment.Firstly i would have loved to come and see it in person but due to my job. I will be paying by money order or a check so give me your full name and address to make them payable to as i do not want to lose this sale to someone else. If you will keep it in my favor, i don't mind adding twenty dollar for the delay. Pick-up wont be a problem as i already have an arrangement for that.
thanks

Scammers from England: Caveat Empor

Sat, 2010/11/20 - 13:36

My girlfriend and I have both been presented with this same scam, during separate encounters we received emails from a man in London, England on a business trip responding to our Craigslist ads. He offered my girlfriend a job as a personal assistant, who would cash checks and send him a balance. He said he was running an electronic company.
The next inccident was when he replied to an ad, expressing his interest in wholesale tires. He said his assistant would send me a check, I should cash it and send him the difference because he sent an overpayment. What a wise guy? These people forget that we're ALL on to you. His email ended in divinestores.org as well.
Guard your information, these fools are running wild.

I just got one today. What's the point of these scammers? Are they just trying to get product with someone else's money? Then sell the product themselves?
