Another scam via Craigslist: offering more than asking price

  1. Home
  2. Internet Scams and Fraud
  3. Another form of Internet Fraud: Usenet Forsale Scam

By Khalid on 2006/08/08 - 10:12, last updated 2006/08/08 - 10:12

Here is a classic scam from Craigslist. They offer to buy your item you advertised via classified for more money than you ask for ($375 in my case, he offered $500).They even give you a bleeding heart story about wife dying in accident.

From: ike derico Alright,i live in North Georgia United State.Am quite comfortable with the condition of the item since i wont be making any repairs on it,i will like to offer you $500 including packing materials without you paying for any shipping charges b'cos i already have an account with FedEx,i would have loved to make the payment in cash and carry but we are not in the same state so i will like to go ahead with the payment by sending you a Money Order But i will need your contact infomation in which the money will be deliver ok.I wonna buy this [item name] for my step son to fulfill the promise his mum made before she died,i lost my lovely wife to an auto accident on 29th of June 2005 and since then i and her step son john have been living seperately and i want to buy this item for him because his mom promised him before death took her away from us and i think with this i and tobi can live as a family. Kindly get back to me immediately you receive my e-mail and i will like you to take it off craigslist for auction cos am serious in buying it.So let me have your full infomation ofr pyment to be made.... Best Regards. .I.Derico

Note how they can't pick up proper English names? I got another from 'ortega hanson'.

Same scam

Sun, 2010/11/21 - 19:56

Same scam. Same language. But what's the scam? They could get the same info from the phone book. Doesn'tmake sense.

From Nicole Scott at divinestores.org

Hi,
Thanks for your response. I'm going on a vacation to London but I will instruct my assistant to prepare and mail your payment which I'm sure you will get in about 4 - 6 business days. I'll add $20 extra for the delay. I'll pay by M O or cashier check so send me your info (i.e full name, mailing address and your phone number) so payment can be mailed out immediately. I will also make arrangement for pick-up which will be after you must have received and cashed the payment.
Awaiting your info.
Thanks

Another e-mail to add to the spam list

Wed, 2010/11/24 - 08:35

spencer jimmy - spenceraju111@gmail.com

Sharon Johnson - sharonjohn1700@divinestores.org

I was told by my assistant that your item is still for sale ,i would have love to come and see it,but my scheduled is very tight.I will mail out your payment once you provide your full name.phone number and address.I can only pay via money order as am on a business trip now,pls let me know where to send your payment to because i wouldn't want to lose it to some else.I don't mind adding ($50) dollars so you can keep it in my favor, you should get your payment in 4-5 working days i will appreciate if you can get the ad off craigslist so i can be sure you are keeping it in my favor. Please let me know as soon as you receive it so i can start making arrangement for the pick-up.
Thanks

My Response

Any payments mail to me would have to be proceed by my bank and can take 45-60 business days to properly clear therefor you would not be able to pick up the item until then. It would be better when "making arrangements for the pick-up" you send $200.00 cash. Thanks

Scott Nicole <scott@divinestores.org> is a Craig's List SCAMMER!

Wed, 2010/11/24 - 12:43

I GOT THE SAME WORD-FOR-WORD EMAILS AS REPORTED ABOVE. HERE ARE HIS 3 EMAILS TO ME.

1) You still have it up for sale?

I REPLIED YES, ASKED WHEN HE COULD PICK IT UP, GAVE MY TELNO AGAIN (ALSO IN MY AD) AND ASKED FOR HIS. HE IGNORED ALL THIS AND RESPONDED WITH THE SAME CUT-AND-PASTE REPLY LISTED ABOVE:

2) Hi,
Thanks for your response. Thanks

I THANKED HIM FOR TRUSTING (!) ME BY PAYING IN ADVANCE, AND SUGGESTED THAT WHOEVER CAME TO PICK UP MY MERCHANDISE PAY ME AT THAT TIME, OR I GO TO HIS OFFICE TO GET PAYMENT.

I ALSO SAID I NEEDED TO DISPOSE OF IT ASAP, NOT WAIT ¨4 -6 business days¨ FOR MAIL, AND COULD HE PICK UP IN THIS WEEK. THEN, I LEFT MY NAME & ADDRESS.

HE IGNORED ALL MY POINTS AND REPLIED:

3) Your payment will be sent ASAP please consider it sold. I will appreciate if the ad is taken off craigslist so i can be sure you are keeping it in my favor.

I WAS ABOUT TO DO THIS WHEN I GOOGLED ¨divinestores.org¨ AND FOUND THIS WEBSITE.

How to stop scammers when selling on CL

Wed, 2010/11/24 - 19:38

1) Use the anonymous e-mail provided by CL. This way they do not have your real address.
2) Make a GRAPHIC of your e-mail address like CL uses to make sure an individual and not a machine is making an ad. I use MS Paint and scribble my address into it with lots of dots, etc.
3) ask for a local phone number for where they claim to be from - the area code will give them away or their excuses for not giving one
4) add their e-mail address to every FREE e-mail newsletter you can find. This will load up their mail box with junk making it harder for them to find victims.
5) Watch out for scammers selling cars incredibly cheap too! Near new Accords and Camrys for $4000 are just to get your e-mail and start a scam. I add these guys posted e-mail addresses to newsletter sites too.
6) NEVER accept an apparently good money order for more than the sale amount. Never give bank account information for "depositing" into your account.

attempted scam by henry webber

Sat, 2010/11/27 - 01:28

My fiance got an email from henry webber claiming to want to by an item off craigslist. After the email was read to me I told my fiance it was a scam but descided to google the name to double check as always my insticts was correct. In my opinion DO NOT RESPOND TO ANYTHING FROM DIVINESTORES.ORG. don't be scammed like we almost was. These ppl claim to send u a check or money order u cash it then it comes back bad not only do u have to pay back the amount of the check or money order but would also have the bank charges. Why pay for someones stupidity and ignorance. DO NOT GIVE THESE "SCAMMERS" AT DIVINESTORES.ORG ANY OF UR PERSONAL INFORMATION.

Just keep going back n forth

Sun, 2010/11/28 - 13:56

Just keep going back n forth with these guys. Send them fake information ask them questions, offer to give them your bank account info and social security number. Have fun with it and get their hopes up. Just google the address to make sure it doesn't exist. This will disrupt their operations. The more time the spend on you the less time they have to scam people who are dumb enough to fall for it.

Buying a car

Sun, 2010/11/28 - 18:27

So i was looking in to buying a car and a few people that replied to me have almost identical responses.

Example email:
Hello,
Thank you for your interest in buying my car. Let me tell you a few words about the car. It's a 2003 Infiniti G35 Sports Coupe, in perfect condition, White no need for additional repairs, no scratches, dings, special marks whatsoever, never been involved in any accidents. The interior looks great (NO SMOKING). It has 31,000 miles . It has a clear title ready to be signed and notarized on your name. The price is not negotiable , $2,940.00 is my last price.I sell the car at this price because I cannot enjoy it due to my job(I work as a dealer on a cruise ship) and I'm a single woman and I have nobody close who can use it.
All documents, including owner's manual, clear title and a bill of sale on your name will be provided along with the car. Also about payment and shipping I will use only eBay vehicle protection program so we can both be protected.I just need your full name and address so i can open a case.(with no further obligation or fees).

So look out for burke.juliet@comcast.net and kreten2001@gmail.com

Strange cr*p.
