  3. Another form of Internet Fraud: Usenet Forsale Scam

By Khalid on 2006/08/08 - 10:12, last updated 2006/08/08 - 10:12

Here is a classic scam from Craigslist. They offer to buy your item you advertised via classified for more money than you ask for ($375 in my case, he offered $500).They even give you a bleeding heart story about wife dying in accident.

From: ike derico Alright,i live in North Georgia United State.Am quite comfortable with the condition of the item since i wont be making any repairs on it,i will like to offer you $500 including packing materials without you paying for any shipping charges b'cos i already have an account with FedEx,i would have loved to make the payment in cash and carry but we are not in the same state so i will like to go ahead with the payment by sending you a Money Order But i will need your contact infomation in which the money will be deliver ok.I wonna buy this [item name] for my step son to fulfill the promise his mum made before she died,i lost my lovely wife to an auto accident on 29th of June 2005 and since then i and her step son john have been living seperately and i want to buy this item for him because his mom promised him before death took her away from us and i think with this i and tobi can live as a family. Kindly get back to me immediately you receive my e-mail and i will like you to take it off craigslist for auction cos am serious in buying it.So let me have your full infomation ofr pyment to be made.... Best Regards. .I.Derico

Note how they can't pick up proper English names? I got another from 'ortega hanson'.

COMPLETE SCAM

Thu, 2010/11/11 - 14:33

THIS IS A COMPLETE SCAM.

This is what they are doing.
They are selling items in various places craigslist ect.
Example
iPhone 4 $250.00

They usually have these type of adds all over for many different types of items. They may just even just reply to an item that you are selling.

If you get this email about them wanting to purchase your item and will send you a money order and even offer a little bit more and they just need your name and address to send it to.

So you say Hmmmm...
And give them your name and address.

What they do is when someone wants to purchase their FAKE iPhone they ask that they send them a money order in Your Name to your address for $250.00.

So now you get the money order and cash it from their victim.

Now it shows that YOU CASHED it. What they will then do is ask you do is send some type of money gram for the rest to them. Which is over seas.
__________________________________
Here is the exact email I got from these people. Which I knew from the start that it was crap just thought I would
waist their time.

___________________________________
Hi,
Thanks for the response.I am willing to pay your asking price.I will pay you with money order as its the only way i can pay you at the moment due to the fact that i am away for a family emergency.I will make arrangement for the pick-up after payment have been received by you. I dont mind adding an extra $20 just for you to keep it in my
favor.Reply with your full name and address where payment should be sent, and a phone number where i can reach you. Please take the posting off craigslist today and consider it sold to me.

Expecting to hear from you soon
___________________________________

Then you will get the next email

I am only buying stuff to re-sell. I live in Florida but have an arrangement with a moving company to pick-up for me as soon as you have received payment and deem it fit to let go of it. I will be paying with a money order or Cashiers check so Please if you are okay with my arrangement, reply back with your full name and address so
that payment can be sent as soon as possible.
______________________________________

So I played with him and gave him a fake name and an address that I can get the money order from. ""Don't worry I will be calling the person that sent the money order about it"
______________________________________
This is his next email

Hi,
I have given my assistant the go ahead to mail payment to you.You should receive payment within the coming week.Once payment is received we can proceed with the pickup. Thanks for your understanding and patience.
Expecting to hear from you.
______________________________________
Then a couple days later I get this one.

Your payment has been sent but there is something i think i must bring to your notice immediately. I just discovered there is an error in the payment sent to you. My assistant sent the payment meant for another item thats more expensive than yours. I have called the post office to
see if they could retrieve it but nothing positive. I really dont know what to do now. Please and Please, you can go ahead and cash out the Money Order at your Bank when you receive it, deduct your payment and
send the balance via western union to the details i will provide you with. Can i trust you to do that for me?
_____________________________________

So when the money order gets here I will be contacting the person that sent the money order then contacting this THIEF named Andrew Kristof with the email of donaniot21@gmail.com

the same guy just tried to pull this on me. Said he was interested in my product for $75, offered an extra $20 if i would take it off craigslist so I did. Got the email how his assistant made a mistake and mailed me a MO for an amount much for intended for another seller, and asked me to wire him the difference of $900 overseas. I immediately knew this was a scam. I just emailed him and said his money would be returned to him via leprechaun riding a unicorn.

Nicholas Haydn haynich@divinestores.org

Good day and hope you are doing great?.My assistant just informed me that you still have the item for sale. I am willing to pay your asking price,You will receive your payment in 4-5 working days,i would have loved to come and see it in person but i am currently on a business trip in the UK ,and that wont permit me to. I will be making payment by check and i will be needing your phone number, full name, address or p.o box address to make the payment to. As i do not want to lose this sales to other potential buyers,if you will keep it in my favor,i don't mind adding thirty ($30) dollar for the delay. Pick-up wont be a problem as i already have an arrangement for that once you receive payment.
Awaiting your reply
Thanks.

This was my response:
Yes It is still for sale, I will need your full name, Physical address for Delivery and
verfication of your request, please be notified it will take 30 days for bank
to verify your account funds from your bank and delivery of item will not
take place until security of funds is final, thank you for your response,
time is short so please send info for their are 4 other prospects for this item
and first one to make payment gets the item as promised...

Sincerly Yours

Must read!

Fri, 2010/11/12 - 22:22

All you people saying "thank god" i did my research" or Thank god I figured it out". You would have to be the dumbest person on the planet to think even for a second that these offers are legit. The only people who fall for these scams are GREEDY morons!!!! If you considered, even for a split second, doing what they asked you to do then you should ask a loved one to hit you over the head with a 2x4 and maybe it will knock some sense into you!!!! YOU DON'T GET SOMETHING FOR NOTHING!
