  3. Another form of Internet Fraud: Usenet Forsale Scam

By Khalid on 2006/09/16 - 13:44, last updated 2006/09/16 - 13:44

I got this email from a scammer, in response to a classified ad for a car. You can see that his questions are more sophisticated than the others:However, the signs of scamming is there, such as "the item", and signing "Donald" while his name in the email is "greg mcdonald".

From: greg mcdonald <gregmcautos@yahoo.com>Subject: [title of car ad from craigslist]HELLO, MAY I KNOW IF THE ITEM YOU ADVERTISED ON THE NETIS STILL AVAILABLE FOR SALE, MY CUSTOMER IS INTERESTED INBUYING IT , HE IS PRICING IT $950 ,LET ME KNOW IF ITS STILL FORSALE, WITH THE BOTTOM PRICE .ASAP.WHEN WAS IT DRIVEN LAST?ARE YOU FIRST OWNER?Donald

My reply:

Not first owner.Being driven every week. Please call 555-1212 for details.

He then replies:

Hello  Khalid,I will be travelling out toady on a vehicle inspection ,you can always be intouch with me easily through the mail,Happy to let you know that my client is still interested in your Item,He informed me that the Bank Money Order will be in the amount of $18,000 which covers the total cost of your Item ,sales tax,mvc costand shipping charges. Therefore once you confirm your payment ,you are required to deduct the cost of your Item and make advance available to my Clients Agent currently on vehicle pick up   ,to enable  them offset shipping cost ,make prompt booking with shipping company, pay haullage cost, insurance, taxes and process all documents (bill of sale, vehicle titles, etc)on his behalf make repairs on the Item if need be?confirm this and send your Name ,to make out the payment,Address for mailing of the check, phone No.Your Honesty Understanding and Co-operation will be appreciated .ThanksDonald

He still says "the item", and offers 18 X my asking price! what a deal!He asks for more, then will ask for the difference to be wired back to him, and that is the  scam.

Ok!

Good that you are satisfied with the condition and the price.Unfortunately,I dont do paypal payments, due to all scams going on.I've closed my account already.Only way to do this right is either you coming yourself to pick up the car and pay in cash or sending the money with shippment company and they can pay in cash when picking up the car!Or,if you are not too far,I can deliver a car to you myself!
Best regards

So i answered as above.

Ok,good..I'm quite satisfied with the condition and price. I will be paying the PayPal charges from my account and i will be paying directly into your PayPal account without any delay, and i hope you have a paypal account. If you have one already, just send me the address to send it to, which is the email address you use for it or you can send me a paypal money request, so once i receive the details i will go ahead with the payment through PayPal and then i will contact my shipping company after you get the payment. I will need your home address for it to be Picked Up by the Shipping Company..

Me too!

I was contacted by this person ( Sandrella Aydin ) ( abintina@gmail.com )yesterday about my car on Gumtree. We've been mailing each other all morning. Little do they know I am just messing with their heads now. At first I was unsure but as things progressed, it became obvious.

Apparently they have sent me £1100 through PayPal acording to them and the emails I have received from PayPal. These are obviously fake emails! 1) They arrived in my junk mail. 2) PayPal emails always have a green tick next to them. 3) The emails were from service@paypal.com (p.aypal.intl@usa.com).

So they have sent me £1100... they haven't I checked my actual PayPal account, nothing! They want me to send £350 of my own money to an address through Western Union. Only then will PayPal release the full £1100.

Since then I have just been going along with them wasting their time asking quesion after question. The last question I asked was, how do I transfer money through Western Union and for their full name and the name and contact details of the shipping company they will be using. I am still waiting for a reply, I don't think I will be getting one!

Oh well, made my morning a bit more fun than usual!

Anyway, beware folks. Always check emails, names etc if you're not sure. I may save you a lot of money!
