  3. Another form of Internet Fraud: Usenet Forsale Scam

By Khalid on 2006/08/08 - 10:12, last updated 2006/08/08 - 10:12

Here is a classic scam from Craigslist. They offer to buy your item you advertised via classified for more money than you ask for ($375 in my case, he offered $500).They even give you a bleeding heart story about wife dying in accident.

From: ike derico Alright,i live in North Georgia United State.Am quite comfortable with the condition of the item since i wont be making any repairs on it,i will like to offer you $500 including packing materials without you paying for any shipping charges b'cos i already have an account with FedEx,i would have loved to make the payment in cash and carry but we are not in the same state so i will like to go ahead with the payment by sending you a Money Order But i will need your contact infomation in which the money will be deliver ok.I wonna buy this [item name] for my step son to fulfill the promise his mum made before she died,i lost my lovely wife to an auto accident on 29th of June 2005 and since then i and her step son john have been living seperately and i want to buy this item for him because his mom promised him before death took her away from us and i think with this i and tobi can live as a family. Kindly get back to me immediately you receive my e-mail and i will like you to take it off craigslist for auction cos am serious in buying it.So let me have your full infomation ofr pyment to be made.... Best Regards. .I.Derico

Note how they can't pick up proper English names? I got another from 'ortega hanson'.

Why is the Craig's List - PJ Scott thing a scam?

Mon, 2011/12/05 - 14:40

Why is this a scam, if they don't get money from you or anything else? I got the PJ Scott email on Craig's list and it made me suspicious right away. I just realized here that is was a scam after the third email in which it said overpayment was sent and when the check arrives send the money back. If no check arrives, which I suspect, how are they going to get money from me?

P.J. Scott Is a Scam

It's a scam when you claim to over pay someone with a fake check and are instructed to send the excess amount via western union.

This guy is a scam.

I know now this guy is a scam. What I'm going to do is when a week passes (when I was promised the check). Though I may have received a check and I definitely now have not sold my item (a china cabinet) because this jerk held it up, I'm going to write this email in response to the next one I get from him:
"I'm sorry, your check did not arrive in the week you promised, thus voiding our agreement. I relisted the item and it is already sold. I will return your check to your assistant at the sending address. I wish you luck in buying another item and good luck scamming someone else." He, He, he
Also, my friend recommended framing the fake check as a memento.
I didn't think it could be a scam because the guy said he would send a cashier's check and I said I would make the item available after the check cleared. I would never send anyone money to pay back part of a check unless I held the cash from that check in my hand. Now I realize that the whole thing about this is that the check would be fake. Thanks for your commment. Much appreciated.
All this jerk caused me was wasted time and a delay in selling my item (because I did have some other people interested in it).

One more bad apple: Prof Thomas Moore tomoore101@gmail.com

From: "thomas moore"
Subject: SUBLET NEEDED ASAP.....
--
Hello,

I am responding to the advert that you placed on
craigslist.com,after going through the advert i am interested in it
and i want to sublet it for the period that it is available for.I am
willing to sign a lease for the unit if there is one.I will really
appreciate it if you can forward me more details about the unit and
also let me know your final price for the rent and deposit.I intend
to move in by the end of Dec around the 30th and want to stay in it
for 3 months ending on March 30th,2012.

I will appreciate a quick response to my email enquiry.

Thank you.

Prof Thomas Moore

THEN sent this monster email 1 minute after I responded:

Subject: KINDLY GET BACK TO ME ASAP...
Thanks for your email,i am interested in renting the place for the
period that you have specified that it will be available for.Since it
is a nice location,i am going to rent it as i like it .I am an easy
going person and would be outdoors most of the time during my stay in
the apartment due to the research work will be doing while i am in the
states. My reason for coming to the states is because i will be doing a
private research work with the United States Environmental Protection
Agency(USEPA),i will be glad to show you my contract papers and all
other documents relating to my research with them during the summer
on my arrival in your place,i am even of the opinion that such issues
can best be handled physically.

For me to move ahead and pay the deposit required to keep this
place on hold for me and the rent for this apartment before i arrive,i
have a financier in the United States and i will make arrangements
with him to issue and send you the payment to cover it.For him to
issue this check,i will need you to provide me with your full name in
which the check will be issued and your complete physical contact
address to which it will be sent to by my financier,as soon as you
provide these,i will forward it to my financier with an instruction to
issue and send you the check. Please i need you to also reconfirm the
total move in costs, that is the rent and deposit to be paid.

Due to the limited time that i have before my arrival,i will
want us to wrap up everything as regards this rental as soon as
possible so that i can be sure that i will have a place to stay on my
arrival in the states. As regards the lease agreement,if there is
any,i want you to send it to me for my review,i will eventually have
it filled and signed on my arrival in your place and i will abide by
it.If you need to reach me for more information, you can always reach
me on +44 7031914059 ,please dial as presented for international
calls.

I will look forward to your e mail with the required information.

Thank you.

“Hi, Am glad it’s available.

Sat, 2011/12/10 - 22:16

“Hi,
Am glad it’s available. I’m going on a vacation to London but I will instruct my assistant to prepare and mail your payment which I’m sure you will get in about 4 – 6 business days. I’ll add $20 extra for the delay. I’ll pay by M O or cashier check so send me your info (i.e full name, mailing address and your phone number) so payment can be mailed out immediately. I will also make arrangement for pick-up which will be after you must have received and cashed the payment. Awaiting your info.
Thanks”

I actually responded and after multiple emails, I received two MO of 955$ each two days later! I fell for it but not all the way through. I DID NOT CASH IT IN. THE MO’S WERE OBVIOUSLY FAKE and I am going to report it to the police (maybe). Wow, I feel stupid but not enough to fall for it completely.

Emails were: johnpilek@gmail.com and avimperman@gmail.com.

Aliases were: Matthew Reberry, Matthew Rubbery, Wilson Bishop

BEWARE.
