  3. Another form of Internet Fraud: Usenet Forsale Scam

By Khalid on 2006/09/16 - 13:44, last updated 2006/09/16 - 13:44

I got this email from a scammer, in response to a classified ad for a car. You can see that his questions are more sophisticated than the others:However, the signs of scamming is there, such as "the item", and signing "Donald" while his name in the email is "greg mcdonald".

From: greg mcdonald <gregmcautos@yahoo.com>Subject: [title of car ad from craigslist]HELLO, MAY I KNOW IF THE ITEM YOU ADVERTISED ON THE NETIS STILL AVAILABLE FOR SALE, MY CUSTOMER IS INTERESTED INBUYING IT , HE IS PRICING IT $950 ,LET ME KNOW IF ITS STILL FORSALE, WITH THE BOTTOM PRICE .ASAP.WHEN WAS IT DRIVEN LAST?ARE YOU FIRST OWNER?Donald

My reply:

Not first owner.Being driven every week. Please call 555-1212 for details.

He then replies:

Hello  Khalid,I will be travelling out toady on a vehicle inspection ,you can always be intouch with me easily through the mail,Happy to let you know that my client is still interested in your Item,He informed me that the Bank Money Order will be in the amount of $18,000 which covers the total cost of your Item ,sales tax,mvc costand shipping charges. Therefore once you confirm your payment ,you are required to deduct the cost of your Item and make advance available to my Clients Agent currently on vehicle pick up   ,to enable  them offset shipping cost ,make prompt booking with shipping company, pay haullage cost, insurance, taxes and process all documents (bill of sale, vehicle titles, etc)on his behalf make repairs on the Item if need be?confirm this and send your Name ,to make out the payment,Address for mailing of the check, phone No.Your Honesty Understanding and Co-operation will be appreciated .ThanksDonald

He still says "the item", and offers 18 X my asking price! what a deal!He asks for more, then will ask for the difference to be wired back to him, and that is the  scam.

I do.. :(( Got e-mail from her(abintina@gmail.com) and also from paypal-helps.com. I e-mailed the paypal for confirmation and they assure me it's safe n secure. However, after 2 payment made through western union (for her shipper to pick-up motorcycle), the paypal e-mail inform me that their account department has wrongly charged her account and has added RM2700.00 more. Now they want me to pay more as paypal cannot reversed the money to her account. I've contacted paypal through paypal website, and been inform that they are spoof e-mail (fraud cases)! I'm lost about RM 7000.00. Now, I'm stucked and do not what to do..

BEWARE!!

Sarah Gordon is now Mrs Tilley. She is still pregnant but isn't now deaf.

Within two days of advertising my car on Autotrader I get an email worded exactly the same as listed on this forum.

Can't the police or Autotrader do something about this??

Their new strategy now is try to convince people for using PayPal as a received payment method.

Scam:
Hello,is it still for sale?

I:
Hi, Yup. It is still for sale. Interested? Then we can talk about the price. :)

Scam:
Ok,good. What is the body condition and how old is it??i will take care
of all Shipment Preparations for the merchandise to be transported,i
will buy at the listed price and payment will be sent through PayPal
which is a fast, safe and reliable method of payment, and i will be
needing your email with PayPal for payment or you could send me an
invoice(ill handle the PayPal surcharge, you just let me know).Make
sure you get back to me so that we can arrange for pick up as i will
like it to be picked up..await your response.

I:
Uiks. Where are u actually? What about if I don't have PayPal account? How are u going to pay? Can u introduce about ur self first? I'm quite confusing right now.

Scam:
My name is Syafiq..Right now am in Astor. But don't worry about the shipment..I will arrange the pickup..sorry to hear you don't have an account with PayPal.I hope you wont mind to get an account with PayPal.
Its reliable and easy to use PayPal,all you need to do is visit www.paypal.com/my and register with them.
When you are done with the registration send me the email used for the registration with PayPal so i can pay in.
Await your response..

I:
Seriously I am not really2 confident in selling things overseas. If u really want this then only after I confirm got the money from you and only then I will do like what u arranging for the shipment. I got PayPal account. I can send u an invoice if u agreed.

Scam:
Ok,i agree

I:
Ok. Now I want to double confirm with u. U would like to pay according to the advertisement right? So the price will be RM8888.00. How about if there any other charges? Will there be any extra charges / fees in a large amount? I am about to send u an paypal invoice.

After I sending that he never replied me back. So beware from this kind of scam! I myself almost get into his trap. Thanks God I got some friend can double check this thing for me.

GMAIL replied with:
