I recently listed a car for sale on craigslist and other local classified ad services.This is one reply I got, which is clearly an attempt at scamming:

Problem is, the scammer is not very smart. I did not posted pictures to begin with, so there are no more pictures. So, I sent this reply:

I intentionally did not attach any pictures. A genuine buyer would have noticed this of course. Instead, the scammer proceeded with the next step, revealing his true intent:

You can get this materials from the following stores.1. Office Depot2. Office Max3. Staples Store 4. Stationery Store5. Compusa.When you get this materials you can print the check out and immediately after the printing you can then get the check cashed at your Bank or any bank of america branch around you I will wait for you to confirm and clear the check.The payment will be in excess as i will want you to contact my shipper with the excess fund for shipping the car after you must have confirmed and cashed the check.i will wait for your bank to clear the check so you can deduct your own money and send the excess fund to the shipper via Western Union Money Transfer so as to cover the cost of shipping the car from your place to it's destination. This is a classic scam where a fake cheque is sent to the victim for more than the amount owed, and the difference is to be wired to the scammer.

Mon, 2012/05/21 - 10:40I had the same thing happen to me yesterday (5/20/2012). They were going to buy a 4-Hour Fire Safe for $2,900 plus they added $1,000 for their shipping contractor and I was to then Western Union Wire Transfer the $1,000 so the PayPal payment could be released.
Sad thing is, since I was smart enough to NOT send the money, no crime was committed and it doesn't seem like anybody in the legal department cares.

Sat, 2012/06/02 - 09:18Ok now I'm concerned. Steven Smith answered my response to a Craig's List ad for A Bookeeper/Clerical Assistant. We talked at length on IM & he also wants me to by some checks,envelopes,& Magnetic versal ink to start the job. He didn't want to call on the phone but he finally did thru Deaf & hearing impaired service to get me onto IM. He does payroll for some companies he contracts with. He says he is in Florida I in California. He hasn't asked for any money but he some inappropiate questions, I feel.I will get paid thru Western union. Could this be a scam?

And also I'll be mailing out the payment to you inform of the Certified Check drawn out from my bank and its gonna be sent to you via Fedex or USPS Courier Service. I will handle the shipment myself by hiring one of my private shipping company to come for the pick up as soon as you have your cash in hand. So i want you to include information on where the the payment can be made out to Your ; Name.......Address..........City........Zip Code.........Phone Number........I will be awaiting your response Michael David
