  3. Another form of Internet Fraud: Usenet Forsale Scam

By Khalid on 2006/08/08 - 10:12, last updated 2006/08/08 - 10:12

Here is a classic scam from Craigslist. They offer to buy your item you advertised via classified for more money than you ask for ($375 in my case, he offered $500).They even give you a bleeding heart story about wife dying in accident.

From: ike derico Alright,i live in North Georgia United State.Am quite comfortable with the condition of the item since i wont be making any repairs on it,i will like to offer you $500 including packing materials without you paying for any shipping charges b'cos i already have an account with FedEx,i would have loved to make the payment in cash and carry but we are not in the same state so i will like to go ahead with the payment by sending you a Money Order But i will need your contact infomation in which the money will be deliver ok.I wonna buy this [item name] for my step son to fulfill the promise his mum made before she died,i lost my lovely wife to an auto accident on 29th of June 2005 and since then i and her step son john have been living seperately and i want to buy this item for him because his mom promised him before death took her away from us and i think with this i and tobi can live as a family. Kindly get back to me immediately you receive my e-mail and i will like you to take it off craigslist for auction cos am serious in buying it.So let me have your full infomation ofr pyment to be made.... Best Regards. .I.Derico

Note how they can't pick up proper English names? I got another from 'ortega hanson'.

Don't fall for a scam on craigslist

Tue, 2009/06/09 - 20:58

I cant believe anyone falls for any of these scams. Since I started using craigslist for buying/selling cars, I must have had over 100 emails from scammers, both buying and selling scams. But, its so obvious its a scam, I don't understand how anyone falls for them. First of all, the first thing you see in big bold letters when you log onto craigslist is DEAL LOCALLLY, and you will NEVER get scammed. Second, just think about this one: why on earth would somebody post an item such as a car in a different state?? Its obviously a scam. Thirdly when people offer to send you a check, and fedex it the next day for more then you asked for and tell you to return the remainder, the check will obviously bounce a week after you cash it. I just don't understand how people fall for it. Craigslist is a wonderfull site but no matter how desperate you are, or how badly you want an item its just not worth it unless its local PERIOD!!! It doesnt make sense to send a stranger money without actually seeing the item in person.

Most importantly for those who still don't want to take my advice heres a simple rule that will tell you right away if its a scam or not: Scammers will NEVER leave a telephone number, they only leave email. Simply ask them for there telephone number, they will never give it to you. Then you will know right away its a scam.

DEAL LOCALLY PERIOD!!!!!!!!!!!

THIS MAN CALLS HIMSELF ROY

Wed, 2009/06/10 - 20:37

THIS MAN CALLS HIMSELF ROY HANTING, HE TRIED THE SAME EXACT SCAM ON ME:

It was just brought to my notice that the check has been posted already but there was a slight error which we can handle with care. Instead of $700 the actual part payment, The secretary made out a check of $3700 to you which as already posted to you before I was notified .
How ever this should not disturb the web site design as it will cover both the part payment for the website design, domain name, web hosting and logo design and the excess should please be redirected to our accounts books keeper via western union or Money gram.

The pictures and content are being prepared and should be ready asap We will like a logo like the we will come up with our prefered color preference.!.Please let me know once you have received the check.

Best of Regards,
Roy Hanting

This person, under an alias of Dr. Jesse wanted to send me a check for over the amount of some furniture for a mover to pick up.
I had him send the check to the address of "NCF" which is the national check fraud center. I told him it was my husband's work. Ha. And he fell for it.

I saw another comment on here with the same scammer name, but this one wanted me to wire the money to Kissimmee not Hinton.

GOT SCAMMED TODAY, BY A JIM DOWNEY

Sun, 2009/06/14 - 01:26

CRAIGS LIST BUYER BEWARE!! I'M NEW TO THE WHOLE CRAIGSLIST.COM THING, SO BEING NAIVE, AND AS FRIENDLY AS I AM I WAS THRILLED, SOMEONE RESPONDED TO MY TREADMILL AD. YES, IT SOUNDED FISHY, ESPECIALLY WHEN HE DIDN'T EVEN SEE IT YET, AND HE THREW IN AN EXTRA 50 BUCKS TO PULL IT OFF CRAIGSLIST. SO, I DID. I EVEN WENT FARTHER TO GIVE HIM MY NAME, AND PHONE NUMBER IN THE FIRST RESPONSE. HOWEVER, HE WANTED MY ADDRESS TOO. IN ANY CASE, I'M SUPPOSE TO BE RECEIVING A CHECK IN THE MAIL, WHEN I GET IT, IF I GET IT, I'LL BE TAKING A COPY TO THE POLICE AND SHRED THE ORIGINAL. I SHOULD OF SEEN ALL THE RED FLAGS, SO EVERYONE BE CAUTIOUS AND TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS. IN MY CASE, MY HUMAN QUALITY OF KINDESS OUTDONE MY STREET SMART COMMON SENSE. I KNOW ANYONE CAN GET MY NAME BY GOOGLING, OR THE PHONE BOOK, AND MY ADDRESS TOO, HOWEVER, I GUESS WHAT I'M AFRAID WHAT HE'LL DO WITH IT IS ANOTHER THING, PER SAY, USE IT TO AS A TOOL IN CONTINUING THEIR SICK AND DISGUSTING FRAUD IS WHAT WORRIES ME.

HERE'S THE RESPONSES FROM a JIM DOWNEY:
1ST REPLY: I would love to make a purchase, still available? Please get back asap.

2ND REPLY: I appreciate your response to my inquiry. I would have loved to come check it out myself but I just got married and am presently on honeymoon to hawaii with my wife. I would love a surprise inclusions
and replacements in our home on our return. Please do withdraw the advert from craigslist as i don't mind
adding $50 for you to do that, so i can be rest assured that the item is held for me. I have no iota of doubt regarding the item's good condition as represented in craig's list. I will be making the payment via a Certified Check, which my secretary will mail across to you. I'll be picking the item from you with the aid of a mover. My Mover will be coming to pick it from you once the Certified Check has been cashed. Please I will need both your full name and physical address
along with your phone number to issue out the payment.
Warmest Regards.
Jim

3RD REPLY: I am okay with the arrangement, do email me the requested information for the mailing of the check.

4TH REPLY: Thanks for the consideration and concurring with me on my payment method, I will forward your details over to my Personal assistant and
she will be sending you the check once drawn from the bank. I will email you Once I have an update from her thatthe check has been mailed for you to watch over it to arrive your location. Normally it should take just about 1 to 2 working days to reach your place. Thanks once again I will get back to you.
Regards,
Jim

****PS** I LATER REPLIED BACK TELLING HIM I AM RETRACTING MY OFFER AND THAT I DON'T WANT HIS CHECK, AND DON'T BOTHER ME ANYMORE, I WILL NOTIFY THE POLICE! WELL HAVEN'T HEARD ANYTHING YET, BUT AS FOR THE CHECK, I'M GOING TO RIP IT TO PIECES!

UPS tracking number

Fri, 2009/12/11 - 18:38

I was also sent a UPS tracking number. It still turned out to be a scam. I still took the check to my bank and waited for the bank to say that it had cleared. It turned out that the check bounced.
