I recently listed a car for sale on craigslist and other local classified ad services. This is one reply I got, which is clearly an attempt at scamming:
From: Dave Smith <goldenwum12@yahoo.com>Subject: [The title of the classified ad for the car]Hello,I just viewed your car posting on craigslist and i have interest on it i will like to know the present condition and two more pictures of the car before i proceed with the transaction. Thanks
Problem is, the scammer is not very smart. I did not posted pictures to begin with, so there are no more pictures. So, I sent this reply:
From: meTo: Dave Smith <goldenwum12@yahoo.com>Pictures attached.
I intentionally did not attach any pictures. A genuine buyer would have noticed this of course. Instead, the scammer proceeded with the next step, revealing his true intent:
From Dave Smith <goldenwum12@yahoo.com>To: meHello,Thanks for your reply i got all your information about the car and am ok with it, i will be making your payment today i need your full name and address to make your payment today through electronic check i will handle the shipment myself. All what you need about the mode of payment is to get a Blank check paper and magnetic versa ink to print the check, the check will be sent to your email and you get it printed from it. You can get this materials from the following stores.1. Office Depot2. Office Max3. Staples Store 4. Stationery Store5. Compusa. When you get this materials you can print the check out and immediately after the printing you can then get the check cashed at your Bank or any bank of america branch around you I will wait for you to confirm and clear the check. The payment will be in excess as i will want you to contact my shipper with the excess fund for shipping the car after you must have confirmed and cashed the check.i will wait for your bank to clear the check so you can deduct your own money and send the excess fund to the shipper via Western Union Money Transfer so as to cover the cost of shipping the car from your place to it's destination. I will add extra 100$ for the purchasing of check paper and magnetic versa ink.For more information about the mode of payment you can check the website www.qchex.com and know more about it .Dont worry i will handle the shipping myself with my shipper. you can IM on this ID goldenwum10@yahoo.com or call me on 9145954296 for more information. Thanks and God Bless
This is a classic scam where a fake cheque is sent to the victim for more than the amount owed, and the difference is to be wired to the scammer.

mrslindabrenda@yahoo.com FRAUD and has been reported to Feds
Sun, 2009/05/24 - 12:51I too had a reply well B4 posting the pic's of my brothers 1985 Harley FXEF Fat Bob. These people really think we are all a bunch of idiots. Having us give them our address and phone.
Now what are they posting ads and trying to scam again by acting like they are the owners of the merchandise?
I hope the Feds to act on this and shut them down soon. My brother is very ill and needs to sell the bike for medical, and that is already tearing him up as it is his pride and joy. But the good thing is that we figured it out and fast.
Don't trust anyone, unless you know them.

Thu, 2009/06/11 - 12:37Thanks for posting this, everyone.
Sounds Good
I am okay with the conditon & price. my mode of payment will be via Certified Check Drawn on Bank Of America, you will probably need a VersaCheck Paper (Business Size) or a Business Check Paper to print and cash or deposit the check today, the VersaCheck Paper or Business Check Paper is sold for $15 at any stationery store, office depot or at your local office supply outlet.i will wait for your bank to verify and clear the check before we proceed with the shipping which i will hire my private shipping company to come for the pickup after the check has been cleared at your bank so do not worry about the shipment fee,I will need your name and address to send the E-check, you can read more on how it works at www.iversacheck.com.

I just got one too.
Wed, 2009/07/01 - 11:26I was selling my engagement ring/wrap on craigslist and got an e-mail asking if it was for sale. I said yes and they responded with this.
"Sounds Great,
I am willing to purchase the jewelry from you, Please can you attach me any other picture Available to view and i need to know your last asking price for the item.I wanted to purchase it to present my friend as surprise package gift for there wedding coming soon.My form of payment would be via (www.Paypal.com) please once you setup account with payment kindly email me your paypal email address to proceed and setup the payment.I have contact my friend to send me there information to ship the item so paypal can able to confirm the information once the payment made. await for your paypal payment details.
Thanks"
I'm so glad I decided to google this address. The grammar just sounds weird to me and knew that something wasn't right. What also threw me off was that they were going to give an engagement ring and wrap to someone who was getting married. What an idiot. I'm just going to post this website in the return address.

Ok i will like to proceed with the transaction asap and my mode of payment will be via bank certified check drawn on my bank as there are too many scams on internet with bogus paypal and money orders, the item will be picked up from you by my shipper so you don't have to worry about shipment of the item also the check will be sent with the fund to cover cost of the item and also shipment by my shipping company due to company policy the amount i placed with my company can only be written on a single check so that is why i want you to receive these amount and send the difference to my shippers that will arrange the pickup when the check must have clears at your bank, once the bank verify and clear the check you will deduct your fund and send the excess fund to the shipper to prepare all shipment papers for pickup of the item.I should have handled this myself but i am not available to do this now i am currently away for my company seminar that is why i want you to do this to facilitate the transaction so proceed to delete the advert of the item if my mode of payment is accepted and get back to me asap with your full name, physical address and phone # to send the check to you.
Thanks.

craigslist scaming
Thu, 2009/07/30 - 14:43This same guy goes by Giovanni Tp. He tried to scam me and is so stupid to think that people will fall for his scam. One thing that stands out is the ignorance of the scammer. He uses the word "i" in lower case alot. He obviously has no education in speech or writing. Wish someone would catch him so he will stop wasting peoples time.

$4950 Craigslist auto classify scam
Tue, 2009/07/21 - 13:01This $4950 car ad on Craigslist in every city , every day is a scam. "WRQM 2007 Toyota' Prius Hybrid Hatchback WRQM - $4950 (Philadelphia)"
the title start and end with four letters like WRQM and it could be any car but usually a Toyota. And the price is always $4950.
If you send a inquiry, they will reply saying the car is in some other city, can't be inspected and the seller is in overseas. The car is sold thru Ebay and shipping charge is included in the price. Just pay Ebay and the car will be shipped to you. If you find the car is not as advertised just send it back shipping also paid by seller then Ebay will refund the money. They want your to send full name and your shipping address.

Craigslist scam: certified bank check
Tue, 2009/07/21 - 21:37I got this from a guy calling himself Alex Peters this time.
As seen before, the first contact is a question about pictures.
The second is a sight unseen purchase approach with a 'private shipper'.
