  2. Internet Scams and Fraud
  3. Another form of Internet Fraud: Usenet Forsale Scam

By Khalid on 2006/08/08 - 10:12, last updated 2006/08/08 - 10:12

Here is a classic scam from Craigslist. They offer to buy your item you advertised via classified for more money than you ask for ($375 in my case, he offered $500).They even give you a bleeding heart story about wife dying in accident.

From: ike derico Alright,i live in North Georgia United State.Am quite comfortable with the condition of the item since i wont be making any repairs on it,i will like to offer you $500 including packing materials without you paying for any shipping charges b'cos i already have an account with FedEx,i would have loved to make the payment in cash and carry but we are not in the same state so i will like to go ahead with the payment by sending you a Money Order But i will need your contact infomation in which the money will be deliver ok.I wonna buy this [item name] for my step son to fulfill the promise his mum made before she died,i lost my lovely wife to an auto accident on 29th of June 2005 and since then i and her step son john have been living seperately and i want to buy this item for him because his mom promised him before death took her away from us and i think with this i and tobi can live as a family. Kindly get back to me immediately you receive my e-mail and i will like you to take it off craigslist for auction cos am serious in buying it.So let me have your full infomation ofr pyment to be made.... Best Regards. .I.Derico

Note how they can't pick up proper English names? I got another from 'ortega hanson'.

Continue on Scam on Craigslist about "John Krugger"

Wed, 2009/10/28 - 08:31

Be aware
So This is what this idiot wrote me and he expects that I pay the extra money via Western Union, hahahah :

His wrote:
i am an Oceanographer and i am buying this car for my dad, i am at sea right now,and I can only pay through Paypal........

Also he wrote in his last email :
Hello,
I was about making payments, when my Pickup company sent me a mail, they asked me to pay first before they can make the booking for the pickup at your place, and they only accept western union money transfer for payments and they dont accept paypal or bank transfer and I tried to send the money online but i couldn't and I am on sea and there is no way i can find a western union agent to make
the transfer to my pick up agent, so i wanted to ask if it was okay for me to include my pick up agent's fees in the payments I am about to send through paypal, my pick up agent charged $650 plus insurance and all of that, please can i include their money in the payments I want to send then after i have made the payments you will help me forward the $650 to my pick up agent through western union money transfer, this I would have done myself and not bother you but the for the fact that I am currently on sea, so after I have made the payments you will help me send $650 to my pick up agent through western union money transfer, I just wanted to seek your consent before going ahead with
the payments,I will more than appreciate if you mail me back, and I will be making the payments shortly. Thanks and God bless.

John

PS:the shipping company's Head quarters is in England and any pick up
fees to be paid is sent to their head quarters by the payee, so the
money for pick up will be sent to their head quarters in England
through western union money transfer(this can be done from any post
office) or you can do it online at www.westernunion.com

He's an idiot.

Another Craiglist Scam from capoyan.laitan@gmail.com

Thu, 2009/10/29 - 09:08

This is the body of the email I received for a Juicy Couture I listed on Craigslist

Thanks so much for the update. The price is not the problem but i think i have to be very careful this time when am transacting on the internet. I had fallen into the hands of some fradulent seller that, collected my money and never ships out my item. I hope i can trust you? Anyway, i intend to make fast payment as soon as i can before i travel to Bahamas in 2 weeks time. I will making my payment through Cashiers Check and i will wait till you receive and cash it before i arrange for the shipping.

Shipping will be solely funded by me without you paying a dime, if you are okay with this, let me have your full name and address plus your reachable telephone number as it will be written on the payment so that,i can forward it to my finance house to prepare your payment immediately for you to receive it on time. Do get back to me
****************************************************
end of email to me.

So, I started thinking, If this person got scammed, why in the world would they set up another deal using a check?
I wrote back and told them cash only.
What a waste of time.

How Does It Work?

Sun, 2009/11/01 - 23:58

This scam sucks, but how does this scam work? Obviously if the check bounces I am not letting anyone pick up squat. I will only wait till it clears. So what's the catch?

Here is the email I got from a scammer off craigslist:

I have already gone through the details and i am interested in purchasing. I will be paying by Money Order and you should receive the payment within the coming week as per pick-up, I will make arrangement with the moving company to come for pick-up after payment has been received by you. l would appreciate if you take the posting off craigslist today and consider it sold to me. I don't mind adding Extra $40 so you can keep it in my favor. Please provide your Name and address for payment along with your home phone number band cell phone number .My assistant will mail out the payment to your address Once payment is received we can proceed with the pickup. Thanks for your understanding and patience.Do have a nice time...waiting to read from you ASAP.

Regards,
Thank

The check won't bounce but the bank will come after you later

Sun, 2009/11/08 - 21:19

Here's how it works. The check isn't from his account; it's from another person's account that he stole or has gained access to (through ID theft). So he gives you a check for more than what you ask for and wants you to cash the rest. The bank will cash the check b/c it's a legitimate account (just not the scammer's account). It takes the bank 3-7 days to verify this but in meantime they will cash it and give you the funds. You send him the excess in cash via western union and you get to keep the rest. But what you don't know is the bank will come after you in few days for the whole amount.

You see, in a few days the real owner of the account will find that there was unauthorized withdrawal or checks written that he never authorized. He'll file a report with his bank and his bank won't pay to the bank that you cashed you check with. Well, that bank will now come after you! The guy you wired the money to is long gone (or in Nigeria). That's when you realized you've been had, but by then it's too late! I saw an MSNBC report on this. These guys are something else. You end up doing things for them, unbeknownst to you.

Scam from an "oceanographer" named Steven Johnson

Mon, 2009/11/02 - 11:33

Here's a reply to an add I have received from an oceanographer named steven johnson ( and ) wanting to buy a piece of furniture he never saw for 1000$. I like the way he said I accepted his offer while I only said we already have an interested buyer for less but would consider him if he pay cash and come before the other potential buyer. I assume in 10 or 20 years from now, we will get email like that directly from the Space Station... lol

First message from Steven Johnson :

Hi there, i will like to make an offer $1,000 for this, i will be
happy if you accept my offer, payments will be through paypal and i
will arrange the pick up well.
Cheers,

Steven.

Sent from Iphone

Second message :

Hi thanks for mailing back,i am an oceanographer, i am at sea right
now,i am buying this for my son as a surprise gift and I am glad you
accepted my offer.I can only pay through paypal at the moment as i
dont have access to my bank account online(i dont have internet
banking with it),but i have it attached to my paypal account, and this
is why i insisted on using paypal to pay,all i will need is your
paypal email address to make the payments, and if you dont have a
paypal account yet,its pretty easy to set one up at www.paypal.com,i
will be expecting your email.I have a pick up agent that will come for
the pick up after payments has been sorted.

Scam from an "oceanographer" named Steven Johnson

Sat, 2009/11/07 - 07:14

I am in Australia, and have just received exactly the same email for a used car, word for word.

I was already suspicious when I first replied, but seeing his follow up response sealed it!
