  1. Home
  2. Internet Scams and Fraud
  3. Another form of Internet Fraud: Usenet Forsale Scam

By Khalid on 2006/08/08 - 10:12, last updated 2006/08/08 - 10:12

Here is a classic scam from Craigslist. They offer to buy your item you advertised via classified for more money than you ask for ($375 in my case, he offered $500).They even give you a bleeding heart story about wife dying in accident.

From: ike derico Alright,i live in North Georgia United State.Am quite comfortable with the condition of the item since i wont be making any repairs on it,i will like to offer you $500 including packing materials without you paying for any shipping charges b'cos i already have an account with FedEx,i would have loved to make the payment in cash and carry but we are not in the same state so i will like to go ahead with the payment by sending you a Money Order But i will need your contact infomation in which the money will be deliver ok.I wonna buy this [item name] for my step son to fulfill the promise his mum made before she died,i lost my lovely wife to an auto accident on 29th of June 2005 and since then i and her step son john have been living seperately and i want to buy this item for him because his mom promised him before death took her away from us and i think with this i and tobi can live as a family. Kindly get back to me immediately you receive my e-mail and i will like you to take it off craigslist for auction cos am serious in buying it.So let me have your full infomation ofr pyment to be made.... Best Regards. .I.Derico

Note how they can't pick up proper English names? I got another from 'ortega hanson'.

From: Marvin Clinton
Also from his alleged assistant: conelly sean

First email:
I was told by my assistant that your item is still for sale ,i would have
love to come and see it,but my scheduled is very tight.I will mail out your
payment once you provide your full name.phone number and address.I can only
pay via money order as am on a business trip now,pls let me know where to
send your payment to because i wouldn't want to lose it to some else.I don't
mind adding ($20) dollars so you can keep it in my favor, you should get your
payment in 7-9 working days i will appreciate if you can get the ad off
craigslist so i can be sure you are keeping it in my favor.Pleasethe let me
know as soon as you receive it so i can start making arrangement for the
pick-up.
Thanks

Second email:
Hi ,
Your payment has been sent but there is something i think i must bring to your notice immediately. I just discovered there is an error in the payment sent to you. My assistant sent the payment meant for another item thats more expensive than yours. I have called the post office to see if they could retrieve it but nothing positive. I really dont know what to do now. Please and Please, you can go ahead and cash out the Money Order at your Bank when you receive it, deduct your payment and send the balance via western union to the details i will provide you with. Can i trust you to do that for me?

I received the same scam proposal as above. I tried to put the text here but it has been rejected because of questioning it for spam (ha - lots of people posting the same scam!). Anyway, the e-mails came from:

First e-mail:
From: Lineback Judy linebackjude00@gmail.com

Text: Still available?

Second e-mail:
From: Alberto Turner albertress8899@divinestores.org

Scammer

Sat, 2010/10/02 - 11:17

Hello,
Thanks for the prompt response to my inquiry. I hope it is in a perfect condition as I'm highly interested in it . I will have love to come and take a look myself but i am a very busy man i hope you understand ? due to the distance i will like to make an instant purchase but if there is anything wrong, you can kindly let me know and we can fix things up. I don't mind paying additional $50 for it in order for you to take the ad from craigslist and also to be assured that it is already mine. I will be paying you with a certified check and it is going to be sent to you via courier service which is going to be mail to you overnight. For the payment, I'm going to need your details (Full name, address and phone number) in order to facilitate the payment asap. My mover will be coming for the pick up as soon as you have the check cashed so you don't need to bother about the shipping as everything on that is well arranged.
Thanks and I'm waiting to hear from you

BEWARE...Mary Barrett [mbbr1@mills-st.com]

Wed, 2010/10/06 - 16:09

I am soooooooooooooooo glad I googled this email address before I completed a transaction. Here is what I received today:

EMAIL# 1
Hi,
Thanks for your response. I'm going on a
vacation to London but I will instruct my
assistant to prepare and mail your payment
which I'm sure you will get in about 4 - 6
business days. I'll add $20 extra for the
delay. I'll pay by M O or cashier check so
send me your info (i.e full name, mailing
address and your phone number) so payment can
be mailed out immediately. I will also make
arrangement for pick-up which will be after
you must have received and cashed the payment.
Awaiting your info.
Thanks

EMAIL#2
Your payment will be sent ASAP please consider
it sold. I will appreciate if the ad is taken
off craigslist so i can be sure you are
keeping it in my favor

EMAIL#3
I urgently have to bring something to your
notice. I just found out that my Assistant
overpaid you. The payment meant for another
transaction was made out in your name and sent
to you. However I want to believe I wont have
a problem with you on this. Once you receive
the payment, Please proceed to the bank and
cash the payment, deduct your money and send
back the balance to me via western union. So I
can proceed with arrangement for pick-up. Once
more, I hope I can fully trust you with this?
I will await your response on this so my mind
can be at rest.
Thanks

BEWARE, BEWARE, BEWARE!!!
