  3. Another form of Internet Fraud: Usenet Forsale Scam

By Khalid on 2006/08/08 - 10:12, last updated 2006/08/08 - 10:12

Here is a classic scam from Craigslist. They offer to buy your item you advertised via classified for more money than you ask for ($375 in my case, he offered $500).They even give you a bleeding heart story about wife dying in accident.

From: ike derico Alright,i live in North Georgia United State.Am quite comfortable with the condition of the item since i wont be making any repairs on it,i will like to offer you $500 including packing materials without you paying for any shipping charges b'cos i already have an account with FedEx,i would have loved to make the payment in cash and carry but we are not in the same state so i will like to go ahead with the payment by sending you a Money Order But i will need your contact infomation in which the money will be deliver ok.I wonna buy this [item name] for my step son to fulfill the promise his mum made before she died,i lost my lovely wife to an auto accident on 29th of June 2005 and since then i and her step son john have been living seperately and i want to buy this item for him because his mom promised him before death took her away from us and i think with this i and tobi can live as a family. Kindly get back to me immediately you receive my e-mail and i will like you to take it off craigslist for auction cos am serious in buying it.So let me have your full infomation ofr pyment to be made.... Best Regards. .I.Derico

Note how they can't pick up proper English names? I got another from 'ortega hanson'.

Craigslist scam

Mon, 2010/09/20 - 19:13

A "Mandy Lawrence" has been posting on Craigslist offering employment in customer service jobs with a payment up to $1200. They needed mystery shoppers and they will even send you the "check" via UPS. I received the check alright but I took it to the bank and it was....imagine this...a fraud! Glad I lost nothing. Report it if you see this ad.

Craigslist spammer

Mon, 2010/09/20 - 23:26

My first inquiry was from someone who asked if I still had my item available. Once I replied, they got my email (which I made just for Craigslist). The following Day I received the following email.
(P.S) Sorry I didn't save the first guys email addy, but I do remember it was also from divinestores.org.

I was told by my assistant that your item is still for sale ,i would have love to come and see it,but my scheduled is very tight.I will mail out your payment once you provide your full name.phone number and address.I can only pay via money order as am on a business trip now,pls let me know where to send your payment to because i wouldn't want to lose it to some else.I don't mind adding ($20) dollars so you can keep it in my favor, you should get your payment in 7-9 working days i will appreciate if you can get the ad off craigslist so i can be sure you are keeping it in my favor. Please let me know as soon as you receive it so i can start making arrangement for the pick-up.
Thanks

Hello

Great. My assistant told me that you still have the item for sale. I am willing to pay your asking price,You will receive your payment in 4-6 working days,i would have loved to come and see it in person but due to the busy nature of my job that wont permit me,i will be making payment by money order or check and i will be needing your phone number, full name, address or p.o box address to make the payment to as i do not want to lose this sales to other potential buyers,if you will keep it in my favour,i dont mind adding thirty ($30) dollar for the delay.pick-up wont be a problem as i already have an arrangement for that once you receive payment.
Awaiting your reply
Thanks.

I just received the same one

Fri, 2010/09/24 - 12:54

I just received the same one from Stephanie perry. I live in the Seattle area and the phone numbers' area code matched so it almost seemed legitimate as you said. Almost fell for it but the less than two minute response time seemed a bit fishy. After replying to her first email I received the second one almost instantaneously.

Had a feeling this was a scam

Had a feeling this was a scam so googled the name "Ambrose Walker" who had a weird scammy looking e-mail. Here is a copy of the e-mail they sent. See below. Thanks for the tip!

Hello,
Thanks for the prompt response. I am satisfied with the information you provided about it on craigslist. I want to make an instant purchase from you, so please do withdraw the post from Craigslist, I don't mind adding an extra 40 bucks for you to do so. I want to be rest assured that the item is in hand. I will also like you to know that I can only make payment via money order at this time b/c I am away on assignment. Please provide me with your full names, address and phone number so I can make the money order out to you and have it sent ASAP. It will take about 6days for payment to get to you . As per pick-up, I will make arrangement for pick-up the next day after the money order has been received by you.
Expecting to hear from you soon.

Regards
Ambrose Walker
