  2. Internet Scams and Fraud
  3. Another form of Internet Fraud: Usenet Forsale Scam

By Khalid on 2006/08/08 - 10:12, last updated 2006/08/08 - 10:12

Here is a classic scam from Craigslist. They offer to buy your item you advertised via classified for more money than you ask for ($375 in my case, he offered $500).They even give you a bleeding heart story about wife dying in accident.

From: ike derico Alright,i live in North Georgia United State.Am quite comfortable with the condition of the item since i wont be making any repairs on it,i will like to offer you $500 including packing materials without you paying for any shipping charges b'cos i already have an account with FedEx,i would have loved to make the payment in cash and carry but we are not in the same state so i will like to go ahead with the payment by sending you a Money Order But i will need your contact infomation in which the money will be deliver ok.I wonna buy this [item name] for my step son to fulfill the promise his mum made before she died,i lost my lovely wife to an auto accident on 29th of June 2005 and since then i and her step son john have been living seperately and i want to buy this item for him because his mom promised him before death took her away from us and i think with this i and tobi can live as a family. Kindly get back to me immediately you receive my e-mail and i will like you to take it off craigslist for auction cos am serious in buying it.So let me have your full infomation ofr pyment to be made.... Best Regards. .I.Derico

Note how they can't pick up proper English names? I got another from 'ortega hanson'.

scam: craig's list sale

Mon, 2010/10/04 - 19:52

I too had the exact story handed to me. I posted a sale on Craig's List: Philadelphia. The person claims to be Elvis Strauss of Divine Stores. Everything that was written in your email was the exact in mine...i.e., assistant sending wrong amount, cash it out and wire back, driver will pick up merchandise at later date.
I was contacted Sunday 3:40 a.m, which should have been my first clue. The person is probably in another country.

Elvis Strauss to me

Hello

Good day and hope you are doing great?.My assistant told me that you still have the item for sale. I am willing to pay your asking price,You will receive your payment in 4-6 working days,i would have loved to come and see it in person but due to the busy nature of my job that wont permit me,i will be making payment by money order or check and i will be needing your phone number, full name, address or p.o box address to make the payment to as i do not want to lose this sales to other potential buyers,if you will keep it in my favour,i dont mind adding thirty ($30) dollar for the delay.pick-up wont be a problem as i already have an arrangement for that once you receive payment.
Awaiting your reply
Thanks.

shouldve known something was up, his first point of contact was 5am!!

Me Too!!!

Mon, 2010/11/01 - 11:10

I received the same email in response to a craigslist ad. I have not provided any of my contact information, as I thought something shaddy was going on, which is why I googled the email address and found this. My question is...what is the scam? Are the money orders legit or fake? Do they ever pick up the product(s)?

Thanks!

We had the same story!!

Thu, 2010/11/04 - 14:49

We had the same story!! Marvin Clinton of divine stores replied right away when we posted an office desk for sale. He said he is on a business trip and his assistant notified him that the desk is still available (someone did e-mail us this morning asking if it was still available). he said he would send a cashiers check that we would receive in 4-5 business days and he wanted us to take it off of craigs list and in return he would add $50 to the asking price of $499. THANK YOU!!! to everyone for posting your story so we could realize this was a scam before we even replied to him! i tried going to divinestores.org and it's a gmail website which made me suspicious and then i googled it and found these stories.

I am so glad I googled

Wed, 2010/11/10 - 21:32

I am so glad I googled "devinestores.org". I posted UGG Boots on Craigslist and the reply was that he was out of town on business, but will add $50.00 to my asking price of $100.00 and just needs my name, address and phone number so that he can send a money order. Then he'll make arrangements to pick them up. Needless to say, I haven't given any information. What exactly is this scam ??? I won't be posting on Craigslist anymore either.
