Here is a classic scam from Craigslist. They offer to buy your item you advertised via classified for more money than you ask for ($375 in my case, he offered $500).They even give you a bleeding heart story about wife dying in accident.

From: ike derico Alright,i live in North Georgia United State.Am quite comfortable with the condition of the item since i wont be making any repairs on it,i will like to offer you $500 including packing materials without you paying for any shipping charges b'cos i already have an account with FedEx,i would have loved to make the payment in cash and carry but we are not in the same state so i will like to go ahead with the payment by sending you a Money Order But i will need your contact infomation in which the money will be deliver ok.I wonna buy this [item name] for my step son to fulfill the promise his mum made before she died,i lost my lovely wife to an auto accident on 29th of June 2005 and since then i and her step son john have been living seperately and i want to buy this item for him because his mom promised him before death took her away from us and i think with this i and tobi can live as a family. Kindly get back to me immediately you receive my e-mail and i will like you to take it off craigslist for auction cos am serious in buying it.So let me have your full infomation ofr pyment to be made.... Best Regards. .I.Derico

Note how they can't pick up proper English names? I got another from 'ortega hanson'.

Same scam in NYC

Sat, 2010/09/11 - 17:51

I got an offer today by the same person. Same London trip claim. She told me her assistant sent too much money and for me to send extra back via Western Union. I'm glad I googled this email address.

I got the same email - same London trip when selling a stroller/car seat combo and a lot of toddler clothes... Replied to both listings with same email. Definitely a scam!

We are having the exact same

Sun, 2010/10/24 - 20:40

We are having the exact same situation. Francis Conelly is the name they are using (also "harry conelly") and used divinestores.org as one of their email addresses. After over a month of communicating, we finally received FOUR international money orders for $962.00 each (the item for sale was 100). Do they still come and pick up the item? Unless somebody actually gives them an item, in what way are we being scammed (other than hugely inconvenienced and really annoyed)?

should we be concerned that they know our address??? what do we do with these money orders?

Another Francis Conelly

I got an e-mail today for my "item" offering me a money order for my asking price plus $30 to take the ad off of craigslist. The set up was perfect, too because I got an initial e-mail from Alex Conrad (conrad.alex94@gmail.com) asking if the item was still available, and when I responded that it was francisconelly@divinestores.org replied with this story about a business trip.

What set my alert up was when they said they were interested in my "item" rather than specifying, and then asking for all of my contact info in order to send this money order which I would receive in "4 -6 working days".

I reported it to the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) and responded to the e-mail declining any offers and thanking them for their time.

I suggest you do the same

Scammer on craigslist mbbr1@mills-st.com

Mon, 2010/09/27 - 08:28

Just received this response from mbbr1@mills-st.com this morning for an engine I have listed on Craigslist.

Hi,
Thanks for your response. I'm going on a
vacation to London but I will instruct my
assistant to prepare and mail your payment
which I'm sure you will get in about 4 - 6
business days. I'll add $20 extra for the
delay. I'll pay by M O or cashier check so
send me your info (i.e full name, mailing
address and your phone number) so payment can
be mailed out immediately. I will also make
arrangement for pick-up which will be after
you must have received and cashed the payment.
Awaiting your info.
Thanks

Got this also. Add a Frank

Wed, 2010/11/24 - 10:56

Got this also. Add a Frank Thorton (Frank Thornton )to the scam name list.

Here is the email.....

"Good day and hope you are doing great?.My assistant just informed me that you still have the item for sale. I am willing to pay your asking price,You will receive your payment in 4-5 working days,i would have loved to come and see it in person but i am currently on a business trip in the UK ,and that wont permit me to. I will be making payment by money order or check and i will be needing your phone number, full name, address or p.o box address to make the payment to. As i do not want to lose this sales to other potential buyers,if you will keep it in my favor,i don't mind adding thirty ($30) dollar for the delay. Pick-up wont be a problem as i already have an arrangement for that once you receive payment.

Awaiting your reply

Thanks"

Great, Another Scam

Mon, 2010/09/27 - 15:57

I've received a very similar story. Marvin Clinton says that they're on a business trip, and that their assistant has informed them that my craigslist item was still for sale. They asked me to take it off of craigslist, offered to pay an extra $20 for me to "hold" the item, and asked that I give my shipping info and phone number. So far I have no clue where this guy even lives, and I've been pretty wary of him since e-mail #1.

Now they're saying that their assistant accidentally sent a money order for a different item that costs more than what my craigslist item does, and are asking that I refund them the difference. The biggest tip-off that something was wrong was this line:

"Please, you can go ahead and cash out the Money Order at your Bank when you receive it, deduct your payment and send the balance via western union to the details i will provide you with. Can i trust you to do that for me?"

I dunno about you guys, but saying that they want you to do something via Western Union (pretty specific) to "the details i will provide you with"...sounds pretty shifty! Not to mention the fact that the guy hasn't even mentioned anything about picking up or checking out the item.

THANK YOU for posting all of this here, otherwise I would still just be wary, but not know for sure that it's a scam. Guess that when that money order arrives we'll bring it to the authorities and see what they can do about it.
