By Khalid on 2006/08/08 - 10:12, last updated 2006/08/08 - 10:12

Here is a classic scam from Craigslist. They offer to buy your item you advertised via classified for more money than you ask for ($375 in my case, he offered $500).They even give you a bleeding heart story about wife dying in accident.

From: ike derico Alright,i live in North Georgia United State.Am quite comfortable with the condition of the item since i wont be making any repairs on it,i will like to offer you $500 including packing materials without you paying for any shipping charges b'cos i already have an account with FedEx,i would have loved to make the payment in cash and carry but we are not in the same state so i will like to go ahead with the payment by sending you a Money Order But i will need your contact infomation in which the money will be deliver ok.I wonna buy this [item name] for my step son to fulfill the promise his mum made before she died,i lost my lovely wife to an auto accident on 29th of June 2005 and since then i and her step son john have been living seperately and i want to buy this item for him because his mom promised him before death took her away from us and i think with this i and tobi can live as a family. Kindly get back to me immediately you receive my e-mail and i will like you to take it off craigslist for auction cos am serious in buying it.So let me have your full infomation ofr pyment to be made.... Best Regards. .I.Derico

Note how they can't pick up proper English names? I got another from 'ortega hanson'.

Yeah, I've got a collection of baseball cards up for $5000 (it's actually worth eight times that) and he ("christabelnadwitch@gmail.com") wants to buy it sight unseen(!!), and pay by check or MO... in this case, he says nothing about wiring him the difference, and even says he's got people who can come pick it up... sounds like a great opportunity for a sting operation, if I didn't want to risk my kids' safety around people like this :-) I had emailed him my phone number n a prior email -- beware when someone on CL doesn't want to call you! It means they're not "from around here!" Here's his letter, in case anyone wants to match syntax and word choice and style: "Hi, You will receive the payment in a weeks time,i would have loved to come and see it in person but due to the busy nature of my job that wont permit me,i will be making payment by money order or check and i will be needing your full name and address or po box address to make the payment to as i do not want to lose this sales to other buyers,if you will keep it in my favor,i dont mind adding twenty dollar for the delay.pick-up wont be a problem as i already have an arrangement for that.please include the last 4 number after your zip code to speed up the delivery of your payment
Thanks."

Tue, 2010/04/20 - 22:50

I got this one today and almost feel for it but thats what led me here. Thank guys for posting.

really appreciate your response to my email. I want you to consider it sold, Pls do withdraw the advert from CL to avoid disturbance, anyway I don't have time to come over to take a look because of my Business but you don't need to bother yourself with the shipment, I'll take care of that by engaging the services of a shipper, hence I'll be sending a Certified check and it will be delivered to you via United Parcel Service (UPS), so I'll need you to provide me with the following information to facilitate the mailing of the check.

Full name on the check.
Full Physical address to post the check
City, State and Zip Code
Home & Cell Phone to contact you.

Note that the payment will be shipped to your address via UPS NEXT DAY AIR SERVICE and I will like you to know that you will not be responsible for shipping i will have my shipper to come over as soon as you have cashed the check*

N.B UPS does not deliver to a P.O box addresses. Thanks

Craigslist Scams

Thu, 2010/10/07 - 10:36

I agree. There should be somewhere on Craigslist to list the email addresses of the scammers as well as the scam ads. I have located many House For Rent ads that have been fake., They reply with an email asking all kind of personal information and claiming that they have moved to Africa, etc. with their family.

But..here's the last email and it sent up so many red flags...BE AWARE!! I was sad I didn't go through making a sale, but SO GLAD I was aware of what to watch out for so I didn't get scammed, and here it is;

I have experienced something

Mon, 2009/05/25 - 17:17

I have experienced something similar. They asked for my address and phone numbers, which I have provided now before reading this site. Now they said they will send me a check and I should send the difference by Western Union to their "mover" I have given them my contact info, but I am not sure how that helps them "scam" me out of something. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Craigslist Check Scam

Wed, 2009/06/03 - 08:10

The check is NO GOOD.If you cash it and take the cash, send the money Western Union he now gets that money you sent. Now in a few days your bank will get ahold of you saying the check was NO GOOD and you owe them the money back. Now you are out all that money and the SCAMMER is way ahead of the deal.
