Here is a classic scam from Craigslist. They offer to buy your item you advertised via classified for more money than you ask for ($375 in my case, he offered $500).They even give you a bleeding heart story about wife dying in accident.

From: ike derico Alright,i live in North Georgia United State.Am quite comfortable with the condition of the item since i wont be making any repairs on it,i will like to offer you $500 including packing materials without you paying for any shipping charges b'cos i already have an account with FedEx,i would have loved to make the payment in cash and carry but we are not in the same state so i will like to go ahead with the payment by sending you a Money Order But i will need your contact infomation in which the money will be deliver ok.I wonna buy this [item name] for my step son to fulfill the promise his mum made before she died,i lost my lovely wife to an auto accident on 29th of June 2005 and since then i and her step son john have been living seperately and i want to buy this item for him because his mom promised him before death took her away from us and i think with this i and tobi can live as a family. Kindly get back to me immediately you receive my e-mail and i will like you to take it off craigslist for auction cos am serious in buying it.So let me have your full infomation ofr pyment to be made.... Best Regards. .I.Derico

Note how they can't pick up proper English names? I got another from 'ortega hanson'.

laura.heg@gmail.com

I got a CL email from laura.heg@gmail.com for a car I have. Ive been fishy about it since but decided to see how it would play out.

She hasnt sent me a check yet, supposibly its suppose to come around mon-tuesday this week. I was asking 9k she she agreed and later offered 11K. She says I can deposit the check before she sends a "moving company" to pick up the car. Again, its seemed fishy since I got the original email (all of which Ive kept). But how is she scamming me? What r the risks? The car isnt at the address I gave her, and I told her that, so whats really going on?

Thanks for your time, I really appreciate it.

Josh

PS, also whats with the "nigeria scammer" I keep seeing.

The Laura Hedges e-mailed me

Fri, 2009/12/11 - 18:29

The Laura Hedges e-mailed me about my car. She sent the check for over $1,000 more than I asked. She kept telling me to get the money out of my account and get a western union. I waited for the check to go through before doing anything. It turns out a few days later the check bounced. I e-mailed her and she hasn't e-mailed me since then. And i got charged $18 from her check that she sent me.

Thank you for this, I received an email for almost the exact same address, it was laura.hedg@gmail.com, I am in business school and was very skepitcal of how the transaction was so prematurally being offered. I continued to ask questions and so far have not received a response. Thanks again for confirming my suspicions.

This is the same guy as the Terry Lonn scams. I know because he used the word "advert", which I have never seen or heard before. Plus, the story is the same (more or less) as the one he tried to scam me with -the Hawaii honeymoon one. He's out of town and wants to surprise a loved one.... PEOPLE, DO NOT ACCEPT CHECKS FOR MORE THAN THE SELLING AMOUNT TO WIRE THEM BACK THE BALANCE! RED FLAG!

I had someone try to scam me

Wed, 2009/02/25 - 15:30

I had someone try to scam me for my TV. Here's the email address and info on the scam attempt:

Hello there!!! Just got a confirmation from the bank that the check has been issued out and was mailed via UPS to the address you gave me and it should be delivered within 24 hours. However the bank issued out my pay work check of $2500 instead of the actual amount of my purchase.
Email from: neilschaeffer3@gmail.com 'Neil Schaeffer'

"The bank claims that they acted according to my request which is all a mix-up as I never stated that, but made it clear that the payment should be issued as agreed with you. Well this is so unfortunate as I need part of the money to pay for some items I have solicited for on CL and need to make payment sooner than later.
Thus I will need you to do me a big favor. As adviced by the Accounting Officer in the Bank, take the check to your bank as soon as you get it and get it cashed. Deduct the amount we have agreed on. I am willing to part with something to see that I get the money on time; so have an extra $50 to ease your troubles. Then commence immediately to send the remaining amount to my mover in FL, Brooksville. My mover will come ASAP for the pick-up.
I will need a reply from you to know if I can rely on you to handle this as mentioned, and the remanining amount sent accordingly. I hope for a positive response. Thanks for your time and patience!"

Same here. This sent a mail

Thu, 2009/03/19 - 13:50

Same here. This sent a mail today offering to buy my furniture without even seeing anything. Good I googled his email id before spending any more time. Folks - the hero out there calls himself/herself Neil Schaeffer, neilschaeffer3@gmail.com. The actual Neil Schaeffer is an author trying to make ends meet. Poor guy.

Incidentally when you search using the IP address, it turns out to be a yahoo id and not gmail id. there's some clear abuse pattern. The dnstuff.com website has some long list of abuse from this id.

THANKFUL (not verified)

THANK YOU!!!

Thu, 2009/04/09 - 20:27

WOW, want to thank the two of you for your posts on neilschaeffer3@gmail.com as I was just about respond and accept this offer for two pieces of furniture. I think you both saved me a HUGE headache!

Situation - Two different pieces for sale.

Received an e-mail: "Good day, nice stuff you got there. May I know if its still available for sale? I would love to get it. Thanks have a nice day!!!

Our response: "Both are still available. I will be updating the listing for the changing table with photo's tonight."

Received e-mail: Thank you for the quick response. I would love to purchase the item as soon as possible, but I am busy with work and will not be able to come in person.

The pictures will suffice for now. I buy used items and resell, so any item bought will
ultimately be retouched. So what is the final price? Hence if it is agreeable to you provide me with the following info and the final price so as to send a check:
Full name, Phone number, Delivery address(UPS does not do P.O boxes)

So once you cash the check, the item will be picked by my mover. Do honour my committment by removing the ad posted on the site. Have a lovely day. Schaeffer.

Our response: I typically don't sell to someone that is not local. I am concerned if you get the items and are not happy with them. Also, to protect myself, I would need to wait for the check to clear (or I would need a cashiers check) prior to pickup.

Received e-mail: I buy and sell and I refurbish. . . the end product will make any one happy. I can do a cashier's check then.

Our response: I have three other people interested, please send me your best offer and I will get back to you, as soon as I accept an offer I will remove the listing.

Received e-mail: $400

Our response: I would like to accept your offer. My only question is this...what happens if you get the items and you are not happy with them? Do they get returned to me for a full refund? Who is responsible for shipping charges?

Received e-mail: "I will take care of all the shipping charges. There will be no problem about me liking it or not. . .because it will be for resale. . .or exchange. I assure you that there will be no problem of returning."

GEEZ.....WE ALMOST FELL FOR THAT ONE! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!
