  3. Another form of Internet Fraud: Usenet Forsale Scam

By Khalid on 2006/08/08 - 10:12, last updated 2006/08/08 - 10:12

Here is a classic scam from Craigslist. They offer to buy your item you advertised via classified for more money than you ask for ($375 in my case, he offered $500).They even give you a bleeding heart story about wife dying in accident.

From: ike derico Alright,i live in North Georgia United State.Am quite comfortable with the condition of the item since i wont be making any repairs on it,i will like to offer you $500 including packing materials without you paying for any shipping charges b'cos i already have an account with FedEx,i would have loved to make the payment in cash and carry but we are not in the same state so i will like to go ahead with the payment by sending you a Money Order But i will need your contact infomation in which the money will be deliver ok.I wonna buy this [item name] for my step son to fulfill the promise his mum made before she died,i lost my lovely wife to an auto accident on 29th of June 2005 and since then i and her step son john have been living seperately and i want to buy this item for him because his mom promised him before death took her away from us and i think with this i and tobi can live as a family. Kindly get back to me immediately you receive my e-mail and i will like you to take it off craigslist for auction cos am serious in buying it.So let me have your full infomation ofr pyment to be made.... Best Regards. .I.Derico

Note how they can't pick up proper English names? I got another from 'ortega hanson'.

Thanks for your posting, I just got a fishy sounding email from the same address (teresavienna101@aol.com) on my rental posting and looked it up... only to be warned of the scam. Whew.

Another scammer! I advertised a room for rent on Craigslist and this person answered. I think that there are many of them now. I even wrote her back and told her that she can be looked up as a scammer! I'm sooo sick of these people.

I posted a room for rent and received a response from the same email. BE WEARY OF ANYONE WHO HAS POOR ENGLISH ON CRAIGSLIST.

I wouldn't write them back, because they'll probably sell your private email to a 3rd party.

Once you reply with you

Once you reply with you address, They will send you 2-4 money orders to deposit claim the additional is for them to pay for things when they arrive to the States or asking that you pay or send some of the money to someone else.

The money order are fake but it takes the banks 1-2 weeks to figure that out.

I got this e-mail too from larajakob22 - almost word for word, except that she was from Greece, and her dying uncle was in Athens. It just so happenes that I lived in Greece for a year, so I got excited about it and wrote her back in Greek! I thought it was strange she didn't acknowledge my Greek language skills in her reply. She even sent me a picture of herself. She wanted to send me a money order for the amount of first month's rent plus more to pay the shipping company that was going to send her CAR, bedroom furniture, and suitcases to my house in advance of her arrival. She stopped replying to my e-mails when I insisted we talk on the phone first.

Same email

Sun, 2010/08/22 - 18:58

I just got this same email from a girl looking to rent my room. Funny thing is that I haven't ever posted a listing for my room. I've been reaching out to people looking for a room. They aren't just preying on the ads posted, but also posting adds themselves.

craigslist scam

Fri, 2009/06/19 - 08:51

Thank god this website came up when I googled Carson Brady Miller - I felt really uncomfortable about the whole thing - especially the way he wrote - thanks for sharing this information and saving me from losing $1800 - which is the amount Charles Walden was having me wire to Carson Brady Miller - his last email got sort of demanding and it really irritated more than anything else - follow your instincts is the lesson here for me - here is a sampling of his emails to me:

Hello,
I saw your apartment on craigslist and am interested in renting it.I will be signing a one year lease for it and want to know the requirements for renting it.I will be doing a one year research on pharmacy work while in the states and will be staying with my wife.I will appreciate it if i hear from you in time as i will want to conclude the rental process as soon as possible.

Thank you.

Caytee.

I have just discussed the issue of sending the check to you with my financier and he told me that it will be sent asap if you are set. As regards my furniture,I am planning on having them delivered to the house before our arrival so that we can settle in comfortably, you can understand that transiting cross Atlantic is not easy so we are making arrangement with the furniture company to deliver the furniture before our arrival after the rent and security deposit has been paid to you by my financier. We will ask you for a favour here, can we rely on you to take delivery of the furniture for us when they are delivered? We will instruct the furniture company to contact you to schedule a delivery date and time that will be convenient for you to receive the furniture for us.As you will be handling the delivery of the furniture for us,We July ask our financier to include the costs of our furniture with the rent and deposit to be sent to you so that you can help us to make the payment when it is delivered. We will really appreciate if you can do this for us and promise to compensate you adequately for your time and efforts on our arrival in your place. Please let me know if this will be okay with you so that i can instruct our financier to go ahead with the payment.
