Craigslist classified for used car: Cheque fraud scam

  1. Home
  2. Internet Scams and Fraud
  3. Another form of Internet Fraud: Usenet Forsale Scam

By Khalid on 2006/09/09 - 18:28, last updated 2006/09/09 - 18:28

I recently listed a car for sale on craigslist and other local classified ad services. This is one reply I got, which is clearly an attempt at scamming:

From: Dave Smith <goldenwum12@yahoo.com>Subject: [The title of the classified ad for the car]Hello,I just viewed your car posting on craigslist and i have interest on it i will like to know the present condition and two more pictures of the car before i proceed with the transaction. Thanks

Problem is, the scammer is not very smart. I did not posted pictures to begin with, so there are no more pictures. So, I sent this reply:

From: meTo: Dave Smith <goldenwum12@yahoo.com>Pictures attached.

I intentionally did not attach any pictures. A genuine buyer would have noticed this of course. Instead, the scammer proceeded with the next step, revealing his true intent:

From Dave Smith <goldenwum12@yahoo.com>To: meHello,Thanks for your reply i got all your information about the car and am ok with it, i will be making your payment today i need your full name and address to make your payment today through electronic check i will handle the shipment myself. All what you need about the mode of payment is to get a Blank check paper and magnetic versa ink to print the check, the check will be sent to your email and you get it printed from it. You can get this materials from the following stores.1. Office Depot2. Office Max3. Staples Store 4. Stationery Store5. Compusa. When you get this materials you can print the check out and immediately after the printing you can then get the check cashed at your Bank or any bank of america branch around you I will wait for you to confirm and clear the check. The payment will be in excess as i will want you to contact my shipper with the excess fund for shipping the car after you must have confirmed and cashed the check.i will wait for your bank to clear the check so you can deduct your own money and send the excess fund to the shipper via Western Union Money Transfer so as to cover the cost of shipping the car from your place to it's destination. I will add extra 100$ for the purchasing of check paper and magnetic versa ink.For more information about the mode of payment you can check the website www.qchex.com and know more about it .Dont worry i will handle the shipping myself with my shipper. you can IM on this ID goldenwum10@yahoo.com or call me on 9145954296 for more information. Thanks and God Bless

This is a classic scam where a fake cheque is sent to the victim for more than the amount owed, and the difference is to be wired to the scammer.

craiglist scam selling 2006 GMC Sierra 2500 Duramax SLT

Thu, 2009/10/29 - 14:49

Here is the email I recieved.

The truck has been listed on craigslist in different cities, once I told them I would come and get it then all communications stopped.

Hello
I know it may seem strange I'm giving it away at this price, but the truth is I'm
really in tight spot. I'm under enormous time pressure cause I need to sell it fast,
before November 9th. My platoon is sent back to Iraq this month and i have to sell
it before that. It has no damage, dents, or hidden defects. It`s in immaculate
condition, being meticulously maintained and hasn't been involved in any accident,
and the car documents are under my name. The truck has 42.900 original miles
VIN#1GTHK23D76F241566. At the moment it's located in Grantville GA. If you decide to
buy it, I'll be taking care of the shipping fees, to speed things up and manage to
solve everything until the 6th. The price is as stated in the ad $4.600. If you are
still interested, please email me back.

Body type: Pickup truck
ENGINE: 6.6L V8 FI
Transmission: Automatic
Exterior color: Black
Interior color: Tan
Vehicle title: Clear
16 mpg city / 20 mpg highway

Scam?

Wed, 2010/02/03 - 21:59

I am wondering if by this posting your saying that this person claiming to be a Sgt.Maj. Barbara Morris is scamming or trying to scam people into a false vehicle sale? I recently found a RV for sale by her on craigslist.com and wish to know if it's a scam or not...

2005 Rialta motorhome

Mon, 2010/02/15 - 11:37

It sounds too good to be true. A Winnebago, Rialta motorhome that sells for $40,000 for just $5000. I emailed sgt maj barbara morris and asked her for specifics. She had to sell it before Feb 28 as her battalion is shipping out for Iraq then. I asked where she lived for a live transfer of title, Where the motorhome is. Army storage in Indiana. I told her I would drive to Camp Atterbury,Indiana (616 miles) to look at it.She said she would deliver for free. This sounds just like the black pickup truck above. She is getting famous on this site. I'm also looking at another Fleetwood motorhome near Philadelphia, Same deal, different person. A $40,000 motorhome for $5500. perfect condition as both above. Her hesband was killed in Iraq 3 months ago and she is liquidating to move in with her sister. I live 20 miles away and she couldnt take off work or come by in the evening to just let me see that it exists. No answer. Sounds too good to be true. I think I'll pass. I wonder how much she or he makes on these deals?

E check span on craigslist

Tue, 2009/12/22 - 16:31

Thank you all for being there. I have a large dining room table for sale - this person - Kerry Smile - offered to purchase it without even seeing it, told me where to buy the materials to print the check and offered to pay me for the supplies. When I googled e-check scam - you all were there. So I wrote back and said I had no access to a printer, but I would provide my paypal account information if that would work. Strangely enough, PayPal was not an option for Kerry Smile - so I said thanks and no thanks.

Let's all be careful out there - thanks again for your help

Barry Johnson SCAM!!!!

Tue, 2009/12/29 - 23:47

ALCON;

Barry Johnson (AKA-BJ)will use 2 different emails. One is from "mywaytowork@gmail.com" and the other is "bjohnson02@live.com" or some other forms of that.

I am selling a truck and "he" contacted me within a day or two of the add. Due to the fact that I live on a US military installation, I asked him to contact me, at least, by phone. No phone call was ever recieved but numerous emails have been received with replies for "him" to contact me. Apparently a check has already been sent. If I do receive this check it will be delivered straight to the FBI and to my counter-terrorism friends. He is one reason we still need GITMO!

He may ask you to send the remaining balance to a guy in Jacksonville, FL.

Please beware!!! Everyone else...G'Luck!
